31st May 2022 - New system for donating games

This is a brief heads up that we’ve changed our how to donate a game page. We’ve geared away from emails towards comments to be more organized and transparent. These are the changes:

  • We’re only accepting donations for games that are on our missing games list. This way we are able to keep our system organized, and can prioritize lost games that have been requested by users.
  • Instead of sending an email, you can now leave a comment on the game’s page directly linking to the missing files. Our previous email system was not very efficient, with many emails regrettably lost. Additionally, we were receiving hundreds of emails for games that are not on the missing games list. Many of which were being sold, or are available on other abandonware websites.
  • Comments with donated links will be reviewed before being published to ensure they’re safe and relevant. The content, after review, will then be published on the game’s page with credits given appropriately.

Let us know if you have any suggestions that can help improve this system.

3rd May 2022 - About the downtime

A page providing updates about Old Games Download, our project and progress is long overdue. I decided to make this page after the events of the past few days. I’ll talk about it briefly.

On 29th April, 2022 our website began redirecting to a random “tech news” website which we never heard of. This wasn’t dangerous, as it was a text-based website, but we were still unable to access our website’s dashboard. At the same time, all our archived content was kept safe on our server – we were still able to access everything. We also have multiple backups of all of our content and are prepared for such an event. However the redirect did affect what users saw on the front-end.

I’m happy to say that we worked with our hosts and were able to deal with the redirect issue. Whether this was a malicious attack or simply a server-side issue is still unknown. However, what I mostly care about is that it was entirely safe and did not affect anyone. The only negative impact was on the website’s rankings, which is a non-issue at this stage.

The website is now fully online with 2000+ games archived and accessible.

I want to say sorry that this happened – we have been running since 2018 and it’s the first time something like this happened. On a more positive note, we have resumed regular uploads, with more than 400 game requests uploaded in the past 2 months.

I look forward to continue providing what value I can to abandonware and retrogaming communities.
