MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS II. GENERAL TECHNICAL ISSUES III. GENERAL GAME ISSUES IV. LAYOUT BUILDING TIPS V. CONTACTING SIERRA I. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ========================= * Windows(r) 95/98/2000 · Pentium 120MHz · 32MB of RAM · 4x CD-ROM drive · 70MB of hard drive space · 800x600 16-bit color · Sound card · DirectX 7.0 NOTE: Additional hard drive space may be required, depending on the install options chosen. II. GENERAL TECHNICAL ISSUES ============================== PERFORMANCE: The Preference screen has a detail slider that will control the balance between game beauty and game speed. You may want to adjust it to match your personal preferences or your machine's performance. If game performance is a higher priority to you, try pulling the detail slider down a few notches to improve the speed. If the visual display is most important to you, push the detail slider up a few notches to improve the visuals. Turning off music can also improve performance on some systems. WINDOWED DISPLAY: If your display is set to at least 1024x768 pixels and 16-bit color, you have the option to run TrainTown in a window. You can choose this option from the Preferences screen. Running in a window may be slower on some video cards. DISPLAY PROBLEMS: By default, TrainTown uses a full-screen 800x600 pixel display with 16-bit color. Some computers have difficulty changing display modes to accommodate this. You may get around this by making sure your Control Panel's Display settings are at least 1024x768 pixels and 16-bit color. Then, hold down the Shift key when starting TrainTown, which will attempt to run it in a window. If this works, it will remember your 'run in a window' preference setting, and you won't need to start the game with the Shift key in the future. IF YOU'RE USING A VOODOO 5 CARD: Windows 95/98/2000 automatically sets the default video hardware acceleration settings to full acceleration. Various video cards, including the VOODOO 5, may not display images properly in Windows if the Video Hardware Acceleration is set to full acceleration mode. For instance, you may notice a green haze over the TrainTown screens. To address these graphic related issues, lower the Video Hardware Acceleration within Windows. - Click on the START button and choose SETTINGS from the menu. - Click on the CONTROL PANEL icon. - Double-click on the SYSTEM icon to open the SYSTEM PROPERTIES window. - Click on the PERFORMANCE tab at the top of the screen. - Click on the GRAPHICS button towards the bottom of the window. - If the HARDWARE ACCELERATION slider bar is set to full, move the slider two notches to the left. Make sure the caption below the slider bar reads "Basic accelerator functions: Use this setting to correct more severe problems, such as unexpected errors in programs." - Click on OK to save the video hardware acceleration settings. - Click on OK or CLOSE at the SYSTEM PROPERTIES window. - Answer YES to the prompt to restart the computer. SCREEN RESOLUTION: When TrainTown Deluxe is running in full-screen (default), the game will resize your display to 800x600 pixels in size. On some monitors, you may want to readjust the horizontal/vertical position controls to center the display. III. GENERAL GAME ISSUES ========================== Hotkeys -------- Enter: Stop selected train Space: Stop all trains N: Select next engine P: Select previous engine W: Whistle B: Bell F: Follow current selected car or engine 0-7 Manually set engine speed Arrows: Scroll map (Shift will accelerate) KeyPad +/-: Zoom the map M: Map tab O: Option tab I: Information tab T: Hide/Show control bar Esc: Generic requester: Do you wish to end this job? (pauses game indirectly) Pause: Pauses game F1: Brings up readme Win95a Users ------------ If you're using Microsoft Windows 95a and you don't have an Internet web browser installed, there are a couple of things that won't work on your system: 1) The "WEB SITE" button on the main menu won't take you anywhere. 2) The "Jump to WONswap site for internet layout exchange" command on the Advanced menu of the Layout Editor won't work. 3) The "Sierra Website" and the "TrainTown Website" links on your start menu won't take you anywhere. You should consider installing a current version of a web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator to take advantage of these features. IV. LAYOUT BUILDING TIPS ========================== SPECIAL KEYS - You can press 'M' to toggle the Layout-Map overlay in the Layout builder. You can use the SPACE key to re-select the last building or car you placed. This can be helpful when placing multiple trees, or a string of boxcars. PLACING OBJECTS - Try to get the most from the objects you place. Remember that if you fill your layout with trees, it will take longer to scroll around it. If you fill your layout with every large building imaginable, it will require a great deal of your computer's memory and can slow things down. We chose to give you more freedom when placing trees, rather than force a bunch of strict rules upon you. Large buildings have to be placed to line up with track, but trees (and some other small objects) can be placed most anywhere you see fit. But, these trees you place are just for show -- no matter how close you place trees to the tracks, the trains will not collide with them. DELETING A LAYOUT - If you've created a layout that you wish to delete, follow these steps: 1) From the Layout Editor, click on the "OPEN" button. 2) When the Open dialog box opens, click on the "Advanced" button. 3) When the Windows Advanced Load dialog box opens, select the layout you wish to delete, and press the Del key on your keyboard. Then click "Yes" when the "Confirm File Delete" dialog box is displayed. V.
