BATTLESHIP README.TXT --------------------- 09-09-97 This ReadMe file is broken into two sections. The first deals with Classic Battleship, the second deals with Ultimate Battleship. *************** ***IMPORTANT*** *************** This game requires DirectX 5 in order to run. You can choose to install DirectX 5 from the Battleship installer or by selecting "Install DirectX 5" from the right-click menu of the Battleship CD-ROM. ******************************* ***CLASSIC BATTLESHIP README*** ******************************* MULTIPLAYER HOTSEAT GAMES ------------------------- During hotseat games, no ships will be displayed on the game boards on the host computer. You will get a dialog box that will remind you when it is your turn. GAME ISSUES ----------- Classic Battleship and Ultimate Battleship are two seperate games. You can not play multiplayer games between the two different games. Machines that have network cards that are setup for TCP/IP and also have dial-up access to an ISP may have trouble detecting which TCP/IP address should be used for Battleship. If a remote player tries to exit from the Multiplayer Setup screen at the exact same time the host starts the game, both computers may lock-up. You will need to reboot your computer to correct this problem. HARDWARE ISSUES --------------- Polly Well Machine Modems may not work correctly with the version of DirectX 5 that is on the Battleship CD-ROM. Some modems may have problems hanging up after a failed connection attempt. A solution to this problem is to quit completely out of Battleship and restart the game. ******************************** ***ULTIMATE BATTLESHIP README*** ******************************** PREFERENCES: Movie Playback Quality ----------------------------------- Selecting 'Low' will force the game to play lower resolution, full screen flics, reducing both memory requirements and processor time. The default setting is 'High' which is the optimum way to view and play Battleship, with high resolution, full screen flics. CLASSIC BATTLESHIP FLIC PLAYBACK -------------------------------- Low difficulty: Players see flics of missiles hitting their targets. This makes it easier to sink your opponent's ships because you get a full ship identification with your very first hit. High difficulty: Players see generic flics for hits with the explosion way off in the distance. This prevents the player from identifying the ship on the first 'hit'. The only time the target ship is seen is on the final 'hit' that actually sinks it. IN-GAME HOT KEYS ---------------- The following keys provide short cuts to the many of the most often accessed features of Battleship. [Space] Clear All Way Points and Stop (Currently selected Fleet or Squadron) [F1] Defence Measures: Stand Down [F2] Defence Measures: Against Air Attack [F3] Defence Measures: Against Missile Attack [F4] Defence Measures: Against Sub Attack [F5] Alert Condition: Green [F6] Alert Condition: Yellow [F7] Alert Condition: Orange [F8] Alert Condition: Red [F9] Fire Weapons [P] Pause game/Unpause game [ESC] Pause game/Quit game if already paused [Z] Auto zoom On/Off [S] Speed On/Off ON-LINE HELP FILE ----------------- Battleship is supported by an on-line Help file called [Battleship.hlp]. Although not strictly a fully integrated on-line help system, the RoboHelp file contains all of the rules of the game, complete with screen shots and illustrations. Providing your PC is equipped with sufficient memory, the help file can be run as a separate application. With both Battleship and the Help File open, [ALT-TAB] can be used to switch between them. PLAYING OVER A LOCAL AREA NETWORK --------------------------------- Battleship supports network and modem multi-player gaming for upto four players. NETWORK GAMEPLAY ---------------- While playing Battleship over a network, modem or serial link it is important to note the following: Once a game is in progress, we advise that all players remain in the game to the conclusion of the chosen scenario. If a player leaves the game prematurely, his fleets will remain in the game but, being captainless, they will be sitting targets for the other players which may affect or hinder the conclusion of that mission. JOINING AN EXISTING MULTI-PLAYER GAME ------------------------------------- Having selected 'Internet TCP/IP Connection for Direct Play' or 'IPX Connection for Direct Play' as your chosen communications channel, you will be presented with the 'Join Session' dialog box. Sessions that have already been posted will be available to join. However, this dialog box will not dynamically update so you may need to click on 'Back' before repeating the above procedure. WHICH NETWORK PROTOCOL, TCP/IP OR IPX? -------------------------------------- When playing Battleship over a local area network (LAN), two different network protocols can be used: TCP/IP and IPX. TCP/IP is the preferred protocol as it guarantees successful data transfers. IPX is much less reliable and may lead to corrupted game sessions which may cause crashes or game hangs. To install TCP/IP for your local area network, follow these steps: 1) Click the Window's 'Start' button and go to the 'Settings' options. 2) Select 'Control Panel'. 3) Double click on the 'Network' icon from within Control Panel. 4) Scroll through the network components list and see if there are one or more TCP/IP components in the list. 5) If one or more exist, skip to Step 7. 6) Click the 'Add' button below the components list. Select the 'Protocol' component type and click 'Add'. Select 'Microsoft' as the manufacturer and 'TCP/IP' as the Protocol then click 'OK'. 7) Make sure the Primary Network Logon is set to 'Client For Microsoft Networks'. 8) Click the OK button at the bottom of the Network Settings Dialog. You may be asked to insert the Window 95 CD to load necessary files. You may also be asked to reboot your machine. ERROR MESSAGE: -------------- Error Loading filename..... [Abort] [Retry] [Ignore] If you have problems accessing or installing files from the CD check that; 1) The CD is in the drive 2) That the drive tray is closed or the caddy inserted. 3) That the CD-ROM is clean and free of scratches.
