It's been a while. This game was never really supposed to be released. I was messing around with this programming language I discovered called Blitz Basic, which is very cool, and decided to make a retro game. Everyone makes a retro game when they're learning a new language. Usually Space Invaders. Anyways, I decided to make a "new retro game". Ok, whatever. This thing sat on my hard drive for a year or so where it was forgotten, incomplete. That is, until this week. So I polished it up a bit and decided it may as well go out where it's more useful. TEH INTARWEB! Keep in mind, this is considered a beta release. It's had little testing outside of my own system, and it hasn't been optimized for performance. Controls Arrow Keys - Move around Space Bar - Shoot, and leave paused screens P - Pause Known Issues - Speed could be an issue. I put in a simple speed limiter, but I don't honestly know how well it works. - The help screen gets wonky sometimes. It's not much help anyways. - If you input a name that's too long, the score display gets all overlapped and crap. Ridiculous Fake Backstory! The History In 1982, many companies were trying to get in on the popularity of video games. The Yakosan Furniture Co. was no exception. Early in the year Yakosan opened its entertainment division with nearly five hundred employees. Work immediately began on Captain Super-Ultra vs Blasternoids, their first foray into the industry, which was to be developed for all known computer systems of the day. Troubled water lay ahead however. Three months into production, Yakosan was nearly four million dollars in debt and not only that but Super-Ultra was so poorly programmed that none of the technology of the day was capable of actually running the software. No one noticed this until it was too late, because each employee was assigned to develop one part of the program code, a tactic Yakosan would soon regret. Money had become such a problem that the ten year old son of CEO Wokko Manacura was hired to do the artwork for all promotion and packaging of the game. Despite all this, Manacura kept insisting that his company would soon dominate the video game industry, and possibly the furniture industry as well, because of plans for cross promotional Super-Ultra lawn chairs. The public was wowed by video that Manacura claimed contained footage of the game in action. In reality, it turned out to be nothing more than spliced up episodes of Astro-Boy and Speed Racer. Late in the year, Yakosan was forced to reveal what everyone had known all along. The game was unplayable, the artwork was terrible (most of the sprites in the game had actually been stolen from other games in a last attempt to save money), and Yakosan was closing it’s doors for good. The world was tremendously saddened until BurgerTime was released a few hours later. Fast forward to the year 2003. One day as I was loafing around doing nothing productive (a favorite pastime), I received an email from a man claiming to be Mr. Manacura. He claimed to be incredibly impressed with me in general, and wanted to know if I’d be willing to purchase the rights to Super-Ultra. After a vigorous international investigation into who this person actually was, I was pleased to discover that it actually was THE Manacura of the Yakosan Furniture Co.! I immediately responded to him and told him I would be interested to hear his offer. A few days passed before I got a response. He wanted three dollars for the rights. I managed to talk him down to twelve cents. He then offered to sell me some manhood-enhancing pills, which I refused at first. I think we both left those negotiations happy. It’s taken me months of work to get the game into some semblance of working properly. In its original state, it was still only barely playable on today’s computers. I’ve left all of the original artwork and sound effects intact, for the sake of nostalgia and laziness. The translation is also straight from the original, and is terrible, which was a common marketing tactic throughout the 80’s and into the 90’s. The Legal Stuff If you have any comments or questions, feel free to email me at shawno@rodekill.com or visit www.rodekill.com to stare at coloured pictures. You install this software at your own risk. It's a beta, and hasn't been tested much. Not my fault if stuff explodes. Sorry. I didn't draw the cool hero dude on the box art. I stole him from some article on some website and changed the colours of his costume. If you own the image and don't like my ultra-hip and cool game, feel free to get in touch with me and I'll change it, no problemo. Oh yeah, and most of the sprites are just redrawn sprites from other old games. See above. This game is freeware. I have a little donation button hidden away in a corner of rodekill.com, but feel free to ignore it. There are also some ads people can click on, but I'm not supposed to actually tell you to do that, so... I won't. This game may be distributed freely as long as the following criteria are met: - Contents of the original zipped file are not changed in any way. - This game may not be distributed for profit without my consent.
