Disney's The Jungle Book - Key Stage 2 Year 3 The Story Baloo and Mowgli are wandering through the jungle, contemplating life, when suddenly a rhinoceros, Victor, comes crashing out of the jungle. He has some terrible news. Barnaby has been kidnapped! Barnaby, an old monkey friend of Mowgli and Baloo, lives in the ruins of an old temple. For many years Barnaby was a friend of a human explorer called Mr. McAllister, who taught Barnaby and other animals all about humans, and the humans' ways of doing things, through various machines and contraptions that were dotted around the domain. And now someone had kidnapped Barnaby - but who could have done such a thing? Victor explained what happened: as he and Barnaby were having their daily chat, a band of monkeys fell from the trees and seized Barnaby - Victor did not get a good look at the villains but he's afraid that they might want to take over the entire domain! The last thing Barnaby said was that Victor should find Baloo and Mowgli - only they would be able to save him from this band of brutes. So now it's up to you to join Mowgli, Baloo and Victor as they try to figure out who kidnapped Barnaby and why... A. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS B. Clicking on the map icon on the bottom left will give you an idea of all the areas you have to visit to complete the adventure and free Barnaby. To find Barnaby or at least to find the different items they will need to enable them to free Barnaby, Baloo and Mowgli have to explore each area of the domain. On the start screen, you have to click on the helico-balloono first. Once you have completed the first level of this game, you can explore where you like. Moving Around the Domain As you explore the domain, you will see either - Your cursor changing appearance - this means that there is a path open to you. - Different signs showing a lion-head, repair kits or fuel - these will indicate the direction you need to go to find those things. - Arrow signs which will - when you click on them - bring you back to the previous screen or back along the path you came from. Help Even if you try, you can never get lost! You can ask for help at any time. Simply click on the question mark on the navigation bar at the bottom left of the screen. During the activities this help button will repeat the question again on the first click. Subsequent clicks will give you hints and tips. The Map You can go to the map at any time by clicking on the parchment icon on the navigation bar (bottom left of the screen). This map gives you a quick overview of all the areas you have already visited and those you have not yet been to. To return to any place you have been, just click on the appropriate part on the map. If the picture of the activity is greyed-out, this means that you have not yet been there and therefore you cannot access this area from the map. The Challenge Barnaby is being held captive in a prison on the top of the highest mountain towering over the domain. The only way of reaching his sky-touching prison is to take the helico-balloono. This sounds relatively easy... but is it? First you have to clear out a take-off area. Then you'll need to find 3 different coloured fuels to power the helico-balloono motor. You also need helico-balloono repair kits because once you're in the air, who knows what might damage the helico-balloono? So now you know what to do - how are you going to do it? With Victor on your side, clearing the take-off area should be easy... in theory. Unfortunately, Victor tires easily and will need to be fed to keep up his strength. Also, Victor is very particular about what he eats. Flowers are the only things that agree with his delicate stomach. Luckily, one of Mr. McAllister's inventions is a flower-matic machine. All you have to do is put in your tropicash (the local currency) and buy bunches of flowers. The only problem is that neither Baloo, Mowgli nor Victor has any tropicash. However there are four lion-head tropicash Points over by the lake. With your help and knowledge of English, Baloo, Mowgli and you can earn enough tropicash to buy the flowers Victor needs to keep up his strength. Remember: there are four tropicash points - each in the shape of a lion's head. Visiting all four of them will be very useful in your search for flowers. Once the take-off area is cleared, fuel will be needed to power the turbo boosters of the helico-balloono. A barrel each of red, blue and green fuel is needed. Hidden in the domain are two distillorators and a refinorator. The distillorators distil blue and red fuel. The Caracal looks after these machines. The refinorator is looked after by Mango, the vulture. Through addition, subtraction, multiplication and division activities, you can win the fuel you need. The final things you need to find are helico-balloono repair kits. Once you are up in the air, anything might happen. Repair kits will allow you to continue on your journey up to the top of the mountain without falling. The keeper of the repair kits is Elie Kopter, an eagle in flamingo disguise. He will only give you repair kits if you can prove to him that you are not enemy agents. He will issue three science challenges. Complete these to his exacting standards and the repair kits are yours. So now that you have everything you need to fly the helico-balloono, your next challenge is to actually fly this amazing flying machine. Avoid cliff faces, air currents and any puncture-inducing materials that may be thrown in your direction. Once you've reached the top of the mountain, the adventure is not yet finished. Baloo, Mowgli and you have to get past the monkey sentry who guards the Automate Clock, then through the maze, avoiding the wooden robots, until finally you come face to face with Barnaby's kidnapper. Wanting to learn to be human, this villainous ape kidnapped Barnaby in the hope that Barnaby would reveal Mr. McAllister's secrets. Once you have uncovered and defeated this villain and freed Barnaby, you will be awarded with a special "Academy of the Jungle" diploma for all your hard work and help. F. LEARNING ACTIVITIES English - Lion-head Tropicash Points - Hosted by Victor, the Rhinoceros - Win: Tropicash These four places are where Baloo, Mowgli and you can earn the tropicash needed to buy flowers for Victor. Sentence and Word Lake Here you will have to prove your knowledge of the English language and its grammar. The two Lion-head tropicash points will only function properly when you complete the question asked and ring the validation bell. To avoid the monkey guards, Mowgli ties a vine around his waist, then you direct him (and his fishing rod), with your mouse. Answer the questions asked by clicking on the correct word (or words) and placing it (or them) on the bamboo holders on the water. When you ring the bell to validate your answer, the lion-head tropicash point will let you know if you are right. If you are, you will win some tropicash. You have three attempts to win each exercise. If you need any help, just click on the ? icon in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. You will hear the instruction repeated or be given a hint by Victor on how to answer the question correctly. Read & Spell or Read & Sort The only way of winning tropicash from these two Lion-heads is by diving right in and getting yourself totally immersed. Baloo is lying on his back in the lake, while Mowgli is on Baloo's tummy. Direct Mowgli and his bow and arrow using your mouse, clicking to catch the boards that are floating on the lake. Place these boards in the correct place and then ring the bell to validate your answer. Again, you have three attempts to win tropicash with each exercise. If you are a bit stuck, click on the ? icon. You can hear the instruction again or get some helpful tips from Victor. Maths These two machines are where Baloo, Mowgli and you can get the fuel you need to fly the helico-balloono. - The Distillorator - Hosted by the Caracal - Win : Blue or Red Fuel You need blue and red fuel to power the helico-baloono. To distil these different fuels you have to use both of the Caracal's two distillorators. Unfortunately, the monkey guards have damaged them and the only way to distil the fuel is by following the Caracal's instructions. Each time you answer a maths question correctly, you will win some fuel. Once your barrel is full, you can continue collecting fuel or go to the second distillorator and earn a barrel of the second coloured fuel you need. - The Refinorator - Hosted by Mango the Vulture - Win : Green Fuel Mango's refinorator machine works in two ways. Proving your multiplication and your division skills will give you the green fuel you need. The Number-label Generator You need to use the Number-label generator in order to answer a certain number of maths problems. Simply click on the arrows above and below the zeroes until you have the number you want. Then click on the green button to produce your number label. To delete a number label you have created, simply select the label, and then click on the bin (marked with a red x). Your number will disappear. Science - Hosted by Elie Kopter, the Flamingo - Win : Helico-balloono repair kits Elie Kopter, who claims to be an eagle in disguise, is a slightly eccentric flamingo who considers himself a secret service agent. In an extremely "shaken-but-not-stirred" way, he is not sure whether Baloo and Mowgli are who they say they are, or whether they are enemy spies. The only way to win his trust is to complete Elie's three challenges. The Jardino-theatre The Jardino-theatre is a fun stimulator machine where you have to ensure the survival of three plants throughout the four seasons. Keeping a firm eye on the gauges, you have to keep the apple tree, flower or corn alive by giving them enough water, sunlight or shade. Click on the sun icon to increase the temperature, the rain cloud icon for more rain. Snow, hail, overcast -- the choice of weather is yours. But keeping your plant alive is your challenge. The Fizz-Maker No self-respecting secret agent heads out on a mission without partaking of a beverage or two. With Elie Kopter's fizz maker, follow Elie's instructions and make Baloo test all of Elie's famous fizz drinks. Watch Baloo's reaction to some of the concoctions once you have validated your answer. Once you've followed all of Elie's instructions, feel free to invent your own fizzes. The Zoological Library Can you tell the difference between a buffalo and a cockatoo? Hopefully for Barnaby's sake you can... Make Mowgli jump from ladder to ladder to organise the animals according to different classifications -- mammals, birds, herbivores, carnivores -- to win the repair kits you need for the helico-balloono. The Fruit Reserves Hidden throughout the domain and heavily guarded by monkey guards are three fruit reserves where you can get papayas, pineapples and bananas. If you manage to get past the guards, these fruits will be very useful during your adventure. To gain access to any of the reserves, you will have to (a) put the guards to sleep to sneak past them; and (b) unlock the door by solving the clues given to you by an automated gramophone. (a) Putting the Guards to Sleep Now, these monkey guards are a little silly. They have different stories and different questions, but they are not sure how they are related. Mowgli will read them a story. The sergeant guard will ask a question and each of the soldier guards will give an answer. Click on the monkey that gives the correct answer and validate your choice by ringing on the bell. Each time you click on a monkey guard he will repeat his answer. If you have forgotten the question, simply click on the sergeant guard. The more questions you answer, the more tired the guards become until finally they drop off to sleep. All you have to do is sneak past them (b) Unlocking the Fruit Reserve Door An automated gramophone is on the bottom of the screen. Follow the instructions it gives you. Then validate your answer by ringing the bell. Once you have followed all the instructions given by the gramophone, the fruit reserve door will be unlocked and the fruit reserve is yours. The Flower-matic Once you have collected enough tropicash, you have to go to the flower-matic machine to buy the flowers that Victor needs to keep his strength up. The flower-matic will show you the price of a bunch of flowers. Click on the notes and coins you have collected, which are shown on the screen, to match the price of a bunch of flowers. Once you have inserted the correct amount, click on the green button to get your bunch of flowers. The flower-matic does not give change, so you have to insert the exact amount. If you make a mistake, click on the red button and start again. Clearing the Take-Off area Once you have bought the flowers for Victor's delicate stomach, you can finish clearing up the take-off area. Victor, though he has a very tough hide, is very short-sighted, and won't be able to see what he has to clear. It's up to you and Baloo to guide him in the right direction. Victor will keep running until he bangs into something. He will then become slightly disoriented because he can't see anything so he may start running again in the wrong direction. By controlling Baloo, you can prevent Victor from leaving the area he needs to clear. When Victor sees Baloo, he will head off in the correct direction again. Sometimes Victor's clearing will dislodge different fruit or flowers from the trees. If you and Baloo catch them, you can use them to help Victor. Simply aim at a rock or plant and click on Baloo. Baloo will then throw the flowers or fruit in that direction, hopefully hitting the stone or plant and removing it from the take-off area. Once the take-off area is cleared, make sure that you have the three coloured fuels and you are ready to launch the helico-balloono. You can keep replaying this game, by simply returning to the flower-matic to buy more flowers for Victor (if you have the tropicash). Flying the Helico-balloono If you have one, two or three of the different coloured fuels, you can fly the helico-balloono. Simply click on the mouse to take off and use the mouse to avoid all obstacles in your path. Obstacles include air currents, monkey guards throwing fruit, birds puncturing your balloon... anything is possible. Only when you have collected all three fuels plus the repair kits from Elie Kopter, will you be able to fly to the top of the mountain. If you have already reached the mountain top, you can continue flying the helico-balloono, provided you have enough fuel and repair kits. Sometimes just heading up into the sky is very relaxing! The Automate Clock When Baloo, Mowgli and you make it to the top of the mountain, a not-so-nice surprise awaits you..... a monkey guard is standing sentry over a bag of nuts. With the help of Elie Kopter, you can frighten this monkey guard away by activating the clock. This will cause the wooden robots to appear and start breaking the platform the monkey-guard is standing on. All you have to do is answer the time, seasons or date questions that Elie Kopter asks. Easy!.... or is it? Once you have answered all the questions correctly, the robots break the monkey guard's platform so it falls and the monkey guard runs away in fright. You can collect the bag of nuts he leaves behind. These will come in very handy before the end of the adventure. The Auto-maze Once you have got rid of the monkey guard, you will have to try to find a way through the maze that is inside the clock. The automates are still working and unfortunately they won't recognise you as friend or foe. Follow the directions that Elie Kopter gives you while making sure you avoid placing Mowgli in the path of those automates. If not.... Ouch ! The Final Confrontation Once you've made it through the Auto-maze, you will see the kidnapper trying to escape. It's King Louie. He had kidnapped Barnaby under the illusion that he could make Barnaby give up all the human secrets McAllister had shared with him. As King Louie flees by grabbing onto vines and swinging into the forest, Elie Kopter, secret agent extraordinaire, grabs Mowgli by the shoulders. Armed with the nuts you found at the Automate Clock, follow King Louie and try to stop him by throwing the nuts at him. If you have emptied the banana, pineapple and papaya larders, these fruits will be available to you to provide you with extra strength and longer life. Or you can just plain enjoy hitting King Louie with them!!!!! The Diploma Once you have defeated King Louie and freed Barnaby from his prison, you will be awarded with a diploma of outstanding achievement. Choose the diploma you prefer, type in your name and print. The Exercise Book A 25 page printable exercise book is also included on your CD of Disney's The Jungle Book Key Stage 2 Year 3. If you were previously able to run the program, a smudge or scratch is a likely source of the problem. Clean the CD with a soft dry cloth. After cleaning the CD, try running the program again. *Verify that the latest version of your CD-ROM drive's proprietary driver is properly installed on your system. * CD-ROM and computer system manufacturers are constantly updating drivers so that their hardware can play the latest software programs with the best possible performance. If you have not updated your CD-ROM driver recently, you may want to consider doing so to ensure that your system runs all programs with optimum performance. *Verify that the CD-ROM drive appears in the list of components in Device Manager. * If your CD-ROM does not appear in the list, the drive may be using DOS mode drivers instead of the drivers specifically designed for use with Windows 98/Me/XP. Contact your hardware manufacturer to determine if new drivers are available. Please be aware that costs may be incurred when contacting manufacturers. *Change "Supplemental cache size" or the "Optimise access pattern for" settings. * If the program locks up or other performance issues occur in Windows 98/Me, adjust the "Supplemental cache size" or the "Optimise access pattern for" settings from the File System Properties CD-ROM tab in the Performance window of System Properties. Make only one change at a time, so that the source of the problem can be isolated. After making a change, restart the program and test for the error. If the error recurs, continue selecting alternate settings, until the conflict is resolved. If the error cannot be eliminated, restore your original settings and contact your hardware manufacturer. Refer to your hardware documentation for the most complete information on making system modifications to your particular computer. (ii) TROUBLESHOOTING BASICS There are several things you can do to make sure that your computer system realises the full potential of the program. 1. Determine if any changes have been made to the system. A frequent source of conflict between hardware and software is a system configuration change. If an error occurs after making a change to the configuration of your system (i.e., adding new hardware, updating drivers, installing another program), then that system change is a likely source of the problem. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions to verify that the proper installation procedure was used and note any incompatibility issue or system modifications listed in the documentation. 2. Isolate the source of the problem. The program itself does not necessarily cause errors that occur when running a software program. These errors may be caused by the operating system, a conflict between hardware settings, another program running in the background, or an obsolete driver, which has not been updated to work with the system's newer components. Determine exactly when and where the problem occurs, and whether or not the problem also occurs with other software programs. Also determine what other system activities are taking place when the problem occurs. Determining the exact circumstances under which a problem occurs often points to a solution. 3. Determine if the error can be reproduced. Restart the program and test for the error. If the same error occurs in the same location, uninstall the program, reinstall the program, restart the system, and then run the program again. If the error recurs, determine if a similar error occurs with other software programs. If it does, the source of the problem may be one of the system's hardware components. Refer to your hardware documentation or contact the manufacturer to determine if an updated driver or system modification will resolve the issue. 4. Verify that your system meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements of the program. If your system does not meet any one of the minimum requirements, the program will not run properly. 5. Verify that all external cables and connections are secure. Also ensure that power, settings, and option controls for all system components are set appropriately. Refer to your hardware documentation or consult your hardware manufacturer for additional information. 6. Exit all other programs and applications when installing or running the program. Exit any active screen savers, utility programs, anti-virus programs, or shell programs to ensure that the maximum amount of RAM is available for your system to run the program as quickly and smoothly as possible. Also exit any automatic power saving utilities or other timing programs like an anti-virus program that scans your hard disk every hour or a power management utility that shuts down all non-essential system functions during idle periods. If a timing program or screen saver activates during installation or during play, the program may crash or experience other technical difficulties. (iii) DISPLAY ISSUES In order to run Disney's The Jungle Book - Key Stage 1 properly, verify that your video display is set to the correct colour depth of at least High Colour (16 bit). Also, ensure that the Display Resolution is set to the optimal setting of at least 800 by 600 pixels. See below for instructions on changing your display settings. Changing the Display Settings: 1. To open the Display Properties window, right-click on the Desktop and select Properties from the list of options. 2. Click on the Settings tab to bring it forward. 3. Change the Colour Palette or Colours to "High Colour (16 Bit)" or higher. 4. Move the Screen Area slide bar until the setting reads "800 by 600 pixels". 5. Click Apply to enact the change. NOTE: On some systems, if the display settings were changed, you will be prompted to restart the computer for the change to take effect. If prompted, follow the on-screen instructions to restart your computer. If you were not prompted to restart or did not need to make any changes, click OK to close the Display Properties Control Panel. (iv) UPDATING DRIVERS Installing the latest available driver for your video card and sound card can result in a variety of benefits, including increased system performance, new component features, or the elimination of a technical problem. If your computer locks up, the video appears choppy, or the screen goes black, an updated video driver may solve the problem. An updated sound driver may result in crisper, clearer sound. Computer system and component manufacturers are constantly updating their drivers so that their hardware can play the latest software programs with the best possible performance. If you determine that your system is not using the latest driver, or your current driver is dated earlier than one year prior to today's date, you should consider obtaining an updated driver. If your video card and sound card were included with your system at the time of purchase, contact the manufacturer of your computer system about obtaining the latest version of a driver. If you have purchased a system component separately from your computer system, contact the component manufacturer to obtain the latest version of the driver. Updated drivers are frequently available from the manufacturers websites. Refer to your hardware documentation for contact information. Please be aware that charges may be incurred. I.
