DWEEP GOLD README INFORMATION Overview System Requirements Installation Instructions Game Instructions Using the Level Editor Free Level Design Tips On-line Dexterity's Web Site Support Policy OVERVIEW Dweep is a cute, furry, defenseless creature trapped in a hostile world. You must help Dweep solve dozens of levels of unique puzzles. Levels will gradually increase in difficulty and complexity, and many levels have multiple solutions. You can play the levels in any sequence, but it is best to attempt them in order. back to top SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Microsoft Windows 95/98/2000/ME/XP or better DirectX 5.0 or better Pentium 90mhz or better 16 MB RAM 3 MB Hard Drive space DirectX-compatible 16-bit video card (65,000+ colors at 640x480) DirectX-compatible sound card Microsoft-compatible mouse Dweep requires DirectX 5.0 or better. DirectX enhances Windows with advanced multimedia capabilities. If you do not have DirectX installed on your system, you can download it from www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp. DirectX comes pre-installed with all copies of Windows 98 and later, so most likely it is already installed on your system. back to top INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS To install the game onto your hard drive, run the setup program, and follow the on-screen installation instructions to proceed. You will be asked to enter the path to the directory on your hard drive where you wish to install the game files, or to accept the default choice. The installation program will copy the files to your hard drive and create a Start Menu folder for the game. To play the game, simply open the program folder, and select the game icon. back to top GAME INSTRUCTIONS Objective Your goal is to save the baby Dweeps. To do so, you must maneuver Dweep past a series of obstacles. If you get stuck, you can always restart the level and try a different approach. Pick up special items along the way, and use them wisely. Every item has many possible uses, so you must decide the best use for each item to lead Dweep safely to the baby Dweeps. How To Play To play the game, from the main menu of the game, click "Play Dweep Gold." On the next screen, select the level module you would like to play. Dweep Gold includes the original Dweep game (30 levels), Dweep Expansion Pack 1 (20 levels), Dweep Expansion Pack 2 (20 levels), 5 Free Bonus Levels, and 77 custom player-created levels. To play a custom level, click "Play Custom Level." Then select the level you would like to play, and click "Load." You can also double-click on a filename to load it instantly. You control Dweep with the mouse. Left-click on an item in your inventory to select an action to perform. The cursor will change to indicate your selection. Then click on the map area to use the current item at a specific location. For example, to make Dweep wet, click on the water bucket item, then click on Dweep. When you pick up a new item, it will be added to your inventory at the bottom of the screen. When you use an item, it will be removed from your inventory permanently and cannot be reused. It is possible to have more than one of any given item. Right-click at any time to cancel the currently selected item and return to the MOVE DWEEP command. The digits 0-9 on your keyboard also work as hotkeys to select the items in your inventory. Moving Dweep The first command in the list of items is always the MOVE DWEEP command. When the movement cursor is selected, just left-click anywhere on the map, and Dweep will move there if possible. Your goal on every level is to guide Dweep safely to the baby Dweeps. To make Dweep move faster from place to place, hold down the SHIFT key to give Dweep a speed boost. You can use this as often as you like. Items On most levels you will start with no items in your inventory, so you will have to collect them along the way. Items will appear as icons on individual tiles. If you move Dweep onto an item, it will be added to your inventory. Often Dweep will be surrounded by several items you can pick up and use right away. Items include lasers, mirrors, bombs, wrenches, torches, water buckets, fans, and hammers. Most items have multiple functions. Obstacles On every level you will encounter obstacles blocking Dweep's path to the baby Dweeps. These include lasers, mirrors, bombs, fans, freeze plates, and heat plates. Some objects can be used to your advantage; others must be avoided. Laser A laser shoots a continuous beam of light in one of four directions. The beam will incinerate Dweep and destroy any other objects it hits. A laser beam can be avoided by deflecting it with a mirror. You can permanently destroy a laser with a bomb, hammer, or another laser. You can pick up laser items to add to your inventory. There are four types of lasers, one for each direction the laser can face. You can place a laser on any empty tile. An active laser will then appear at that location. Mirror A mirror can deflect any laser beam by 90 degrees. Mirrors can face one of two directions, and they can deflect laser beams on both their front and back sides. Mirrors cannot be destroyed by laser beams directly. Mirror items can be picked up to add to your inventory. You can place a mirror on any empty tile. A mirror object will then appear at that location. Wrench A wrench can rotate a fan, laser, or mirror by 90 degrees. There are both clockwise and counterclockwise wrenches, each represented by a different icon. Both types of wrenches will have the same effect on a mirror, since a mirror can face only one of two directions. Bomb A bomb is normally inactive, but it will explode when its fuse is lit by a laser beam or a torch. An exploding bomb will destroy all adjacent objects. There is a short delay between the lighting of a bomb's fuse and its subsequent explosion. A lit bomb can be defused with a water bucket. A bomb can still be lit again after being soaked. Bomb items can be picked up to add to your inventory. You can place a bomb on any empty tile. A bomb object will then appear at that location. If you place a bomb directly in the path of a laser beam, the fuse will light instantly. Torch A torch can be used to light a bomb's fuse or to melt a frozen Dweep. It has no effect on inflammable objects, such as lasers, mirrors, and fans. A torch can also make a wet Dweep dry again. Water Bucket Use a water bucket to douse an object with water. It can make Dweep wet, which will allow Dweep to safely cross a laser beam or heat plate. It has no effect on lasers, mirrors, or fans. A lit bomb can be defused by using a water bucket on it. A water bucket will bring a floating Dweep back down to the ground. Water buckets have no effect on a frozen Dweep. Fan A fan can blow a floating Dweep a short distance. If floating in front of a fan, Dweep will be blown two squares away and can pass over obstacles, including walls. Dweep can only be affected by fans while floating. Fans have no effect on any other objects. You can pick up fan items to add to your inventory. There are four types of fans, one for each direction the fan can face. You can place a fan on any empty tile. An active fan will then appear at that location. Hammer A hammer can destroy any object instantly, including lasers, mirrors, fans, and bombs. Use a hammer to knock a floating Dweep back down to the ground or to free a frozen Dweep from the ice. Freeze Plate If Dweep steps onto a freeze plate, Dweep will become frozen inside a block of ice. Use a torch or a hammer on the ice to free Dweep. Freeze plates cannot be destroyed. Heat Plate If Dweep steps onto a heat plate, Dweep will float like a balloon. A floating Dweep can only be moved by fans. Use a water bucket or a hammer to bring a floating Dweep back down to the ground. A wet Dweep who steps onto a heat plate will become dry again. Heat plates cannot be destroyed. back to top USING THE LEVEL EDITOR To use the Dweep Gold Level Editor, just click the "Level Editor" button on the game's main menu. The Level Editor will allow you to create your own levels and save them to your hard disk. You can trade levels with other Dweep Gold players in the Dexterity Software Forums on-line. The Level Editor has a very simple interface, so you should be able to learn to create your own Dweep levels in just a few minutes. The bottom of the Level Editor screen contains 26 icon buttons. Most of these represent familiar objects from the game. Placing Objects Left-click on any object's button to select that object, and then left click on a square above to place the object on the level. The object will remain selected, so you can left-click again and again to place it. You can also hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse around to place multiple copies of the same object. Placing an object on an occupied square will replace the old object with the new one. Placing Items Items in the game are things that Dweep can pick up and add to the inventory. Water buckets, torches, wrenches, and hammers are some items that Dweep can pick up. Lasers, mirrors, fans, and bombs can be placed both as items and as objects. Left-click on a laser, mirror, fan, or bomb button to select the object version, or right-click on one of these buttons to select the item version. Then just left click on a square to place it. Placing Freeze Plates and Heat Plates Place freeze plates and heat plates just like any other object. Left-click on the button to select, and then left-click on a square to place. Removing Objects Right-click on any object to erase it. This will also select that object, so you can move an object easily by right-clicking to pick it up and then left-clicking to place it. Other Techniques Right-click on an empty square to deselect the current object. When no object is selected, you can left-click on any object to select it without erasing or replacing it. This allows you to copy an object without moving the mouse back down to the bottom of the screen. You can also left-click on an object and while holding down the left mouse button, drag the mouse to draw with that object. This enables you to left-click on a wall and drag the mouse to extend the wall, for instance. Setting the Level Theme There are five different level theme buttons located in the lower right of the screen. Left-click on any of the theme buttons to instantly change the level's theme. The theme also determines what type of music will be played during the level. Loading / Saving Levels To load a level, click the Menu button in the lower right corner, and then click "Load Level." Then select the file you wish to load, and click the "Load" button. You can also double-click on a filename to load it instantly. To save a level, click the Menu button in the lower right corner, and then click "Save Level." Then enter a filename, title, and tip for your level. The filename determines how the level will be listed in the Load and Save dialogs. The title and tip are shown to the player when playing your level. You can scroll through the list of custom levels if you wish to save over an older file -- just double click on an existing filename to save over it. Deleting Levels To delete a level, highlight the level in the Save or Load dialogs, and then click "Delete." The level file will be deleted to your computer's Recycle Bin, so you can use the Recycle Bin to restore the file later if necessary. Level Properties To set the properties for a level, click the Menu button in the lower right corner, and then click "Level Properties." You can enter a title and tip for your level, and set Dweep's starting inventory. The starting inventory determines which items Dweep will have at the start of your level. You can specify up to nine starting items. Options To set the editor options, click the Menu button in the lower right corner, and then click "Options." You can specify whether or not you want to hear music and sound effects; music is never played while in edit mode, so that option will only affect test mode. You can also specify whether the level title and tip are displayed during test mode; unchecking this option can speed up the edit-test cycle because you won't have to see the same popup window every time you test a level. Testing Levels One of the best features of the Level Editor is its built-in test mode. On the lower right of the screen, you will see the words "Edit Mode" or "Test Mode," depending on which mode you are using. The Level Editor always starts out in edit mode. Edit mode is where you will spend your time creating the level. When you are ready to test your level, click the "Test Level" button in the lower right. This will switch you to test mode, where you can actually play your level. The "Test Level" button will then change to an "Edit Level" button; just click this button again to return to edit mode at any time. You will probably switch between edit mode and test mode many times while fine-tuning your levels. The Level Editor was designed to make testing levels as fast and easy as possible. Test mode works just like the real game. You can still access the Level Editor Menu while in test mode. If you wish to restart a level that you are testing, simply click on "Edit Level" and then again on "Test Level" to reset the level. If you pass the level or if you fry Dweep, the game will return to edit mode. Remember that the current mode is always listed in the lower right of the screen. Sharing Levels with Others One nice benefit of Dweep Gold is that you can share your levels with other Dweep Gold players. You will find all your saved levels in the Levels subfolder under your Dweep Gold game folder. So if you installed Dweep Gold at C:\Program Files\Dweep Gold, then you will find all the levels you've created in C:\Program Files\Dweep Gold\Levels. Every Dweep Gold level file has a .DWP file extension. You can copy level files to a floppy disk, or send them via email as attachments to other Dweep Gold players. Similarly, if you receive levels from another Dweep Gold player, copy them to the Dweep Gold Levels folder on your computer, and they will automatically become available the next time you play Dweep Gold.
