Many Windows 2000 configurations have problems with AGP configuration which result in severe performance degredation. Without proper AGP support enabled, it's typical to see the game running at only three or four frames per second. If you experience problems with AGP support, please contact customer service representatives at the company where you purchased your computer. 2.2 Resolution and Rendering -------------- The resolution in which you run the game will have the greatest impact on performance if you are not in the lucky position of running the latest top of the line graphics cards. Running at 640x480 or will provide the best performance on older hardware. Similarly, the farther back you can see in a scene the more power is required. On older graphics cards you can move the FARCLIPBIAS back to 50 or even 25 if you want to leave other rendering choices at their higher settings. 2.3 CPU Speed ------------- The game is also very sensitive to CPU speed, memory bandwidth, and cache performance. Thus, it runs far better on leading-edge processors like those of AMD and Intel. See section 1.2 for a guideline on recommended specs. On older CPUs which experience slowdowns during fight scenes or during heavy visual FX the PARTICLEDENSITY can be scaled back to 50, 25, or even 10 without losing the feel of the level. 2.4 Memory ---------- Enter the Matrix's performance is highly dependent on the amount of RAM you have in your machine, and the amount of memory that is available. Machines with less memory will access their hard disk more frequently to load data, which causes sporadic pauses in gameplay. Thus, if you have a 256 MByte (or less) machine, you should make sure that you don't have other unnecessary programs loaded in memory when playing Enter the Matrix. How the game will perform under different RAM conditions: * 256 MByte: minimal swapping with default auto-config settings * 384 MByte: might swap in rare cases with highest texture detail * 512 MByte or more: shouldn't swap 2.5 Considering upgrading? -------------------------- For people considering upgrading their machines, here are some tips based on our experience running Enter the Matrix on a variety of machines: 1 The first upgrade is to add RAM. With memory prices continually falling, it's now reasonably affordable to upgrade to 512 MByte of system memory. You'll experience less HD access, and audio will be smooth. 2 The next upgrade that tends to quickly improve Enter The Matrix performance is upgrading your CPU. 3 The final upgrade is HD speed. Because the game is stored locally on your hard drive, it is recommended you have a fast HD, with minimal fragmentation. 7200rpm with 8MB cache is a recommended upgrade. 2.6 Getting better performance ------------------------------ By default Enter the Matrix picks hardware specific default values the first time you run the game which should result in decent performance but there is always room left to tweak. Resolution has the greatest impact on older graphics cards, so try setting the screen size to 800x600 or 640x480 first, when deciding whether you prefer speed or looks. If you have a fast graphics card, but a rather slow CPU you might want to move the far clipping plane close, giving the computer less work to do. Last but not least, if you have both a fast CPU, fast HD, and a fast graphics card you shouldn't have to read this :). ======================================================================== 3 Troubleshooting ======================================================================== 3.1 Sound issues ---------------- The audio in the FMV (Full Motion Video), Cineractive (in-game graphic movies) and especially in-game effects take full advantage of 3D capable sound cards. If you have upgraded your sound card since first installing then please check the options menu and make sure to turn on your new capabilities. 3.2 Control issues ------------------ Most PC keyboards can't recognize certain combinations of 3 or more simultaneously pressed keys. 3.3 Direct3D ----------------- Please ensure that you are running the latest drivers for your graphics card as Enter the Matrix stresses the hardware and drivers to a greater extent than most available games and we rely on a number of bug fixes hardware vendors incorporated into their latest drivers. To obtain the latest drivers please visit the website of your graphics card manufacturer. 3.4 NVIDIA 43.xx drivers ------------------------ The NVIDIA 43.xx drivers are known to have visual flaws and performance problems (hitching) with Enter the Matrix which are not present in the latest drivers. If you are currently running the 40.xx drivers please upgrade to the 43.45 (or later) drivers available at NIVIDA's website: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp The 43.45 drivers have been tested with Enter the Matrix and confirmed to be fully compatible. 3.5 Radeon 8x00 issues ---------------------- Radeon 8x00 cards exhibit a minor visual flaws. We recommend downloading the latest available from ATI's website: http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html ======================================================================== 4 Controls ======================================================================== 4.1 Keyboard ------------ You can bind new keys to controls by clicking on the "Controls" button in the Options menu inside of Enter the Matrix. There are many controls to bind. 4.2 Mouse --------- Although you can rely solely on your keyboard to move around in and interact in Enter the Matrix's 3D universe, using both the keyboard and mouse simultaneously gives you much more fluid and responsive control. When you use the mouse to control your rotational movement and aiming you gain a degree of precision and speed that players using keyboard-only controls can't touch. The keyboard is best used for simple lateral and forward/backward movement, and for jumping. ======================================================================== 5 Useful Web Links ======================================================================== Visit the Enter The Matrix website for updates: http://www.enterthematrixgame.com Information about other Shiny Entertainment games: http://www.shiny.com Find out more about Atari Products: http://www.atari.com ======================================================================== 6 Technical Support ======================================================================== TECHNICAL SUPPORT (U.S. & Canada) --------------------------------- Help Via the Internet Up-to-the-minute technical information about Infogrames, Inc. products is generally available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via the Internet at: http://www.ina-support.com Through this site you'll have access to our FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) documents, our FTP (File Transfer Protocol) area where you can download patches if needed, our Hints/Cheat Codes if they're available, and an E-Mail area where you can get help and ask questions if you do not find your answers within the FAQ.
