Do not install Extreme PaintBrawl 2 on a system running Microsoft Windows NT. For more information on installing Extreme PaintBrawl 2, please see the CD insert. DirectX: Extreme PaintBrawl 2 requires Microsoft DirectX 7 to run properly. The installation program will automatically install DirectX version 7. If you do not have DirectX installed, or have an older version, your version will be upgraded to version 7. If you already have the current or later version of DirectX, the install will not overwrite your files. Uninstalling: If you wish to remove Extreme PaintBrawl 2 from your computer, it is recommended that you use the Uninstall shortcut located in the Start Menu in the HeadGames/Paintbrawl 2 folder. Alternatively, you may uninstall the game from the Windows Control Panel by clicking on Add/Remove Programs, and selecting “Extreme PaintBrawl 2” from the list. ============================================= 4. Starting a Game ============================================= Extreme PaintBrawl 2 is a non-violent team-coordinated exercise. You must build and supply your team with markers, paint grenades and camouflage battle dress uniforms (BDU) if you are to have a chance at successfully completing your exercise. You may choose a campaign-style game that will take you and your team through six exercises by choosing Season Play. Here you will earn funds that will enable you to hire new team members and purchase different markers. Alternatively, you may use the Instant Action mode to jump into an individual exercise without starting an entire season. You will be provided with an assortment of markers and other goods. You should equip your team before starting the exercise, or each member will start with a standard setup. The standard setup includes a PGP marker for each member of the team, 200 paintballs, 500 units of CO2, 5 paint grenades and woodland-style camouflage BDU for each team member. Once you begin the exercise, use your teammates to help you. You can set your teammates to defend an area, follow you, or search for opponents (“assault”). By working together, you can increase your chance of being successful. Your opponent, Blue Team, typically outnumbers you 4 to 1. The goal of these exercises is to bring you and your team back unmarked, while eliminating the enemy threat. NOTE: PaintBrawl 2 will run without the CD in the CDROM drive, but you will not be able to hear music within the game. ============================================= 5. Game Options ============================================= MAIN MENU Season Play When you first start a season, you will be prompted to name your team. After you name your team, you will need to hire teammates and buy equipment. At the end of each mission, you will earn money depending on your level of success or failure. You can use this money to better equip your team and hire new, more experienced teammates. Your training continues until you complete all 6 missions. At the end of the season, your total money earned is tallied. The top ranking teams will be listed on the High Scores board. Instant Action Unlike Season Play, Instant Action allows you to jump right into any map and play any mission without having to progress through a Season. Select the level you wish to play, the difficulty level, and equip your team from an existing gear set. Results of the Instant Action mission do not carry over into any other missions. High Scores Your score is based on how much money you earn throughout a Season. Manage your team well and work your way to the top rank. Configure Controls This menu allows you to change the keyboard and mouse controls to your preferences. To configure the keyboard or mouse, left-click the function you want to change in the left-hand column. Then, press the new key or mouse button you wish to use for that function. The default mouse and keyboard settings are as follows: Shoot – left mouse button Select team member #1 - 1 Jump – right mouse button Select team member #2 - 2 Strafe left – left arrow key Select team member #3 - 3 Strafe right – right arrow key Select team member #4 - 4 Forward – up arrow key Team member to assault - A Backward – down arrow key Team member to defend - D Crouch – Z Team member to follow - F Grenade – G Mouse invert - No Reload ammo - spacebar Reload air - R If you want to revert to the default settings, click the “Default Setup” button on this screen. Options The Options menu allows you to change your video card settings including the type of rendering your card can support (See section 6 “Video Card & System Troubleshooting” for more info), screen resolution and brightness (gamma), sound effects volume and turning on or off the in-game music. The Details option allows you to turn paintball splats on and off. When this setting is set to “On”, paint splats created while playing a scenario will remain until that scenario ends. If Details is set to “Off”, the paint splats will quickly disappear. If you are experiencing slow game performance, or find that performance in the game is gradually getting slower, you should turn Details to “Off” to improve performance. BASE CAMP (Season Play) Buy/Sell Gear This option lets you equip your teammates using your existing pool of funds. Click on the object you wish to buy or sell and click the BUY or SELL button. Select items from Markers, Ammo, Camouflage, and Others. Equip Team Members Here you may choose which team member is to receive which items from your inventory of purchased equipment. Click on the team member’s name, select the item to be equipped and press the Equip button. To remove an item from a teammate, select the item by clicking on the text within the picture of your teammate, and then select the Unequip button. If you equip a teammate with an upgraded gun, his previous gun will go into your unused inventory. You may equip a teammate with this gun at a later time. Hire Team Members Select a new team member from the list at the bottom of the screen. You must then choose the member of your team that you wish to trade. Once both have been selected, choose “Update Roster” to perform the swap. Players are evaluated on their ability to avoid attacks, shoot accurately, and follow orders. Their salaries are a reflection of their individual skills. The players’ stats on these abilities are provided so you can make an educated decision based on your teams’ current needs. Tour the Playfield Select this option to view a level in its entirety without opposition. To enter the level, select the level you wish to tour and click the “Accept” button. Be cautioned, if you use your markers when touring the playfield you will be wasting ammo and air. Play Next Match Once your preparations are complete, select this option to enter your next mission. ============================================= 6. Game Hints & Help ============================================= It is best to start your team members in Defend or Follow mode. By default your team is set to Defend until you tell them otherwise. Ordering all of your team members to assault can open up your team for an ambush. You are the leader and the point man: Play the part. Remember, the game is not about charging forward recklessly, you must move your team slowly and take ground piece by piece. There is no time limit in the game so patience can be a virtue. Opponents are often hidden, and reinforcements can arrive quickly. Clearing out a section of a map does not necessarily mean you'll never find opponents there again after you have cleared the area. It is always wise to use stealth when making your way through a map. Paint grenades (M99s) are an essential part of the game, particularly when there are many opponents in the same area or an opponent is defending a tight corridor. Some maps will be very difficult to win if you do not effectively use grenades. You can find paint grenades (M99s) by going to Buy/Sell Equipment in the Season Play screen and choosing the Ammo tab. Laser sights are also very important. Since you take control of the next available teammate after you have been marked, you will want the increased accuracy that the laser sight allows you. A PPG-303 comes standard with a laser sight. When you command a teammate to follow you, he will audibly respond if he is close by and plans to follow. If he is too far away or otherwise engaged, he will not respond audibly and will revert to "assault mode". In such a case, you may want to then set your teammate to defend so that he will stay on guard and wait for you to find him. As you progress through the scenario, a team member following you may occasionally break away and start roaming the map in “assault mode”. This is based in part on your teammate's ability to follow orders (his “Tactics” rating). Season Play games are automatically saved before and after each mission. If you start a mission in Season Play and then quit out of the mission without finishing it, the next time you play the mission, you will have to start at the beginning of the mission with all of the original opponent players intact. All of your original ammo, marker and teammate configurations will also be intact. When you finish a mission, the game will automatically save your season. In Instant Action, you are provided a supply of markers and accessories, which includes 2 of every marker in the game. Because of this, you cannot equip every member of your team with the same weapon, so be creative with your choices. You may want to give your less accurate teammates the more rapid-fire weapons and give your more accurate teammates the more accurate weapons with the longer range. Strafing (stepping left or right) is a very important tactic to utilize when in battle. You can more easily avoid flying paint balls if you are strafing. In the default configuration, these actions are assigned to the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard. ============================================= 7. Video Card and System Troubleshooting ============================================= Extreme PaintBrawl 2 requires that you have a DirectX 7 compatible graphics card installed to run the game. You should have the most up-to-date drivers installed. If you experience difficulty with the video display, you should make sure you have the latest video drivers for your system. IMPORTANT: When running the game for the first time, you need to select the proper display settings for your computer. Select “Options” in the bottom right corner of the Main Menu to access these settings. Incorrect settings will result in undesirable game performance. For the video card setting, select Software if you do not have 3D acceleration (typically, choose this for any video card with less than 4 MB of RAM). If you have a 3D accelerated video card (typically, most video cards with 4 MB of RAM or more), select 3D Card. Select Glide if your video card specifically supports Glide drivers. In addition, you should select the screen resolution in which the game will run. You can select 320x240, 640x480 or 800x600. The lower the resolution, the faster the game will run. If you receive a “Genesis3D Virtual System” error message or other error message upon launching into a mission, it generally means that your video card cannot support the resolution you have set in the Options screen. If you receive one of these messages, it is suggested that you delete the file “pb2.ini” which is located in the Extreme PaintBrawl 2 folder. This folder can typically be found on your hard drive at C:\Program Files\HeadGames\Paintbrawl2, if you have done a typical install. Deleting the “pb2.ini” file will enable you to run the game again and return back to the Options screen where you can change your settings to a resolution that works. If you have a video card that supports Glide and you plan to run the game on this card, it is recommended that you rename the file “d3ddrv.dll” to “d3ddrv.dlx” to keep your system from trying to run the game in D3D. This file can be found in the root Extreme PaintBrawl 2 folder. This folder can typically be found on your hard drive at C:\Program Files\HeadGames\Paintbrawl2, if you have done a typical install. If you are experiencing problems such as bad color representation in the game or any other display problems including crashing, make sure you are running in 640x480 resolution and are in a 16 bit color palette in Windows. You can set both of these options in the Control Panel under Display Properties. Problems--including the game doesn't start, the game crashes and sends you back to the desktop, the objects are the wrong color, or the game display is streaked or splotchy, lines on the display--are all indications that you probably need to install a new video driver from your manufacturer's web site. Over the course of testing this title, the following video cards or chipsets could not initialize 320x240 in-game screen resolution: ATI Mach 64 S3 Trio64 S3 ViRGE VX Number Nine Revolution 3D Number Nine Revolution IV If you are using any of these cards, it is likely that you will only be able to play the game in 640x480 mode. Over the course of testing this title, some driver issues were found with some Savage-based video cards running Extreme PaintBrawl 2. The game may not be able to run on these cards due to these driver problems. The cards this was noticed on are: Hercules Terminator Beast (S3 Savage3D) Diamond Stealth III S540 (S3 Savage4) Users trying to run the game with the Number Nine Motion 771 (S3 Vision968) video card may experience unexpected problems, such as dropping to the desktop at launch. It is recommended that you update the driver for this card. The driver version that produced the most desirable results was 4.10.00.1555. This is the latest driver for this card and is included with Windows 98. Here are a few locations where updated drivers can be found for some of the more common video cards: 3Dfx (Voodoo, Voodoo Rush, Voodoo 2, Voodoo Banshee, Voodoo3) http://www.3dfx.com/ NVIDIA (RIVA 128, 128 ZX, RIVA TNT, RIVA TNT2, RIVA GeForce256) http://www.nvidia.com/ Matrox (Millennium, Millennium II, G100, G200, G400) http://www.matrox.com/mga/drivers/home.htm Rendition (V1000, V2100 and V2200) http://www.rendition.com/download.html ATI (Rage II, Rage Pro, Rage 128, Rage Fury) http://www.atitech.com/ S3 (Virge GX/DX/VX, Virge GX2,) http://208.202.167.131/swlib/ NEC PowerVR (PCX1, PCX2, Series2) http://www.powervr.com/ Intel (i740) http://support.intel.com/support/swd/graphics.htm Real 3D (i740) http://www.real3d.com/staging/default.htm Trident (Blade 3D, Image 975) http://www.tridentmicro.com/ Number Nine http://www.nine.com/ If you don't see your video card manufacturer listed here, try searching: http://www.go2net.com ============================================= 8. Sound Card Troubleshooting ============================================= Problem: No sound when running on Windows 98. Solution: Make sure your speakers are plugged in, turned on and the volume control is turned up. Also be sure the “Music Volume” option is turned up in the Options menu within the game. To check the settings for your sound card, from your desktop, click [Start], [Settings], [Control Panel]. Then select [Multimedia] and in the [Playback] section, choose [Advanced Properties]. Select the 'Performance' tab and make sure that Hardware Acceleration is set to Full and Sample rate conversion Quality is set to Good. If these settings do not improve the quality, try changing them until you get the sound quality you want. If that does not work, press the Restore Defaults button to go back to the original settings. Make sure you have the very latest version of your sound card drivers and that these drivers are DirectX 7 compatible. To get the latest drivers, go to the web page of your sound card manufacturer.
