To find out if you have DirectX 7.0a or later, click Start, point to Run, then enter dxdiag in the edit field, then click Ok. This will run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. If you have DirectX 7.0a or later, it will say "DirectX Version: DirectX 7.0" near the bottom of the System tab. Upgrades of DirectX are available for download from Microsoft at WWW.Microsoft.com NT4 NT4 does not work with DirectX. You get the necessary upgrades you need when you upgrade to Service Pack 6. Win2000 or WinME Win2000 and WinME are already compliant with DirectX 7.0 and therefore no upgrade is necessary. CD Usage: --------- You must have the CD in the drive in order to run "Field & Stream Trophy Hunting 4". Installing New Video Cards: ------------------------ If you install a new video card in your machine, you should delete the prefs.cs located in the base\ directory of the Trophy Hunting 4 directory. This is typically found in C:\Sierra\THunt4\Base. You can also re-profile your system by going to the Options screen and click on the 'Default' button to re-profile and reset the default settings for your machine and video card. UNINSTALL -------------- After running uninstall, there will be some residual data files that contain your preferences and hunting history data. If you leave these files, your hunting history will remain in tact the next time you install Trophy Hunting 4. You may safely delete these files if you do not wish to keep your hunting history data. III. KNOWN PROBLEMS ------------------------ Win95 If you are experiencing problems getting into the game, try setting your desktop display to a 16-bit color depth. To do this, right click on the desktop to examine the Display Properties, click Settings, and change the selection for Color Palette to '65536 Colors', or 'High Color (16-bit)', whichever your Display Properties gives you. Matrox G400 requires latest driver: Cannot use the WHQL Certified (currently) driver -- 4.00, 4.0.75 (PowerDesk version 4.21) Causes an internal DirectDraw error Only the Latest drivers work -- PowerDesk version 4.45.037 (4.0.0, 4.0.37) This card also supports packed pixel, (16-bit), extension poorly -- recommend turning down Terrain Texture Quality on the Advanced Options screen. Matrox G200. The WHQL Certified and Unified drivers crash on Windows NT. 3DFx Voodoo cards technically support the packed pixel (16-bit) format -- but often go slow (moving left-right in sim is choppy). This can be avoided by inhibiting dynamically-generated texture tiles. This looks ugly, but smoothes things out. On the Advanced Options screen turn down Terrain Texture Quality. There are also intermittent problems if the desktop bit depth is True Color, (set to 65536 or 16777216 colors). Try switching to another desktop bit-depth if you experience problems. 3DFx Voodoo2 cards and Win 95/98 requires recent driver. We recommend Voodoo2 Driver kit version 3.02.02. 3DFx Voodoo2 cards. If you have a Voodoo2 and a different 3D accelerator card installed in the same machine, the non-Voodoo2 card will be chosen as the default display device. If you wish to make the Voodoo2 card the default display adapter, open the Prefs.cs file found in the base folder of the Trophy Hunting 4 directory and change the entries as follows: $pref::Video::displayDevice = "Voodoo2"; $pref::UglyMovie = "1"; $pref::UglySky = "1"; $pref::AlwaysMIP = "1"; $pref::Force16 = "1"; 3DFx Voodoo cards require texture downloads every time the screen resolution is changed. This takes a while and you may notice a delay when you go between the shell and the simulation. If your machine is fast enough, you can avoid this delay by setting the sim resolution to 800x600 to match the shell resolution. 3DFx Voodoo5 cards and Win 2000. If you change the sim resolution in the options screen to a resolution other than the default 800x600, you may experience intermittent crash problems. nVidia TNT and Win NT4. Double rendering effect. Require latest drivers greater than version 3.68 (4.00.1381.0353, 4.0.0). 3Dlabs Oxygen VX1 -- tested driver version: 4.12.01.2107-0821R On all 3Dlabs' cards, expect long pauses between resolution changes (shell to sim and back). On Oxygen VX1 I you may see gray screen, or partial gray screen and desktop, during the resolution changes between the game shell and the simulator. Like Voodoo cards, turning down Terrain Texture Quality improves performance. In the simulator, you may see large patches of gray. We recommend you turn fog off in the Advance Options. The problem must be in all their drivers, we're only disabling fog on Oxygen VXI and Permedia 2 so far. Mouse Sensitivity: When in binocular mode, or when the scope is up, we increase the mouse sensitivity to give you a more accurate shot. There have been rare occasions where the mouse sensitivity is not fully restored upon leaving this magnified state. If your mouse becomes sluggish, or does not seem to respond to movement within the simulation, go to the options screen and increase the mouse sensitivity setting. Looping or Stuttering Music: If you encounter music that seams to be stuck in a short loop when going between shell screens, this may be an indication you need to upgrade your audio card driver. Corrupted or Strange Looking Graphics: If you experience strange looking text, trees, or out of place graphics on the game images, try reducing the 'Texture Quality' setting in the Advanced Options screen. This likely due to low memory on your video card. Reducing the texture quality will send smaller textures to your video card. IV.
