III] JOYSTICK SETUP and CONTROLS ==================================== In Windows 95, Trophy Rivers supports many joysticks and game controllers. You must enable and calibrate your controller from the Win 95 Control Panel before starting the game. Some joysticks may require some adjustment or more than one calibration before the stick centers properly. CALIBRATION: To calibrate your Win95 joystick, click on the START button on the WIN 95 task bar. Move your cursor down to SETTINGS on the pop-up menu, and then select CONTROL PANEL. In the control panel window, one of the choices should be JOYSTICK. Double-click on the joystick selection and follow the instructions. Other controllers will have similar setups. Note: Trophy Rivers supports only Button 1 (trigger) and Button 2 in addition to basic stick or controller movement. No specific support is provided for additional buttons, throttle sliders, "hats," etc. However, your joystick's configuration software may allow you to assign functions to additional controls. Consult your joystick's documentation or manufacturer for more information. JOYSTICK FUNCTIONS When casting or reeling, the joystick controls your rod position. Joystick Trigger or Button 1 works like mouse left-click or [Enter] key. Button 2 works like mouse right-click. Select next item Move stick right or down. Select previous item Move stick left or up. UPDATED JOYSTICK DRIVERS: Your joystick manufacturer may have updated drivers available for use with Win 95. If you have difficulties with your joystick, contact the manufacturer for possible updates. IV] ERROR MESSAGES ==================================== A. HELP IN WIN 3.1 "This File is Not a Windows Help File" Error in Win 3.1 While the Trophy Rivers Help/How-To will open correctly from within the game in Windows 3.1, you will probably get this error if trying to open the Help from outside of the game. There's a simple fix. Open your Windows File Manager. From its FILE menu, select ASSOCIATE, and then associate all help files (Files With Extension: HLP) with the updated Windows Help viewer WINHLP32.EXE in your Windows/System directory. NOTE: You should change the .HLP files association back to the original WINHELP.EXE again if you delete your Win32s files later. "Cannot Write to AUX" Help error in Win 3.1 On some Windows setups, particular "Debug" versions, you may get the System Error "Cannot Write to AUX" Cancel/Retry when opening the Help in Win32s. To proceed, just press Cancel. For a permanent fix, add the following lines in your Windows system.ini file: [Debug] OutputTo=NUL Missing Windows Video Player The game uses the standard Windows media player program MPLAYER.EXE to show the pro-tips. If you have moved or deleted this file from your Windows directory, the videos won't work. You will need to re-install MPLAYER to see them. B. MODEM ISSUES Can't Connect: If it seems like your game has "locked up" when it is unable to establish a modem connection, keep in mind that most Win95 modems will try to connect for a full 60 seconds before canceling. If this seems like too long, you can change it in your Win95 Control Panel's Modems program. Select your Modem, click Properties, and then select Connections. Under Call Preferences, adjust the "Cancel the call..." seconds to 30 or so (but not less than 15). Can't Reconnect: If you want to play more than one modem game at a time, the simplest way is to click Yes when the "Play another game?" dialog appears. Some modems won't reconnect properly if you both exit to the Main Menu before starting the next game. If you want to change Masters, you should both exit the game entirely and then reconnect. New Modem. If you install a new modem, its install program may overwrite some of the Direct Play files and settings used by Trophy Rivers. You can make sure the settings are correct simply by re-installing Trophy Rivers. C. INTERNET PLAY On-line Patching We have included a feature in SIGS Internet play that will automatically download and install patches to keep your software up to date. These patches will automatically be installed, so there is no need to worry about them once the download is complete. Note: Our Internet support files must be downloaded separately from other game files. This may occasionally result in two patches being downloaded, and is perfectly normal. PROBLEM ERROR MESSAGE during setup reads: "There was a failure in trying to configure your system for Internet play. This means your system currently does not support PPP..." SOLUTION This error is displayed if your windows settings indicate that you do not currently have any form of Internet access. Reasons for this include: 1) You have not configured Windows Dial-Up Networking to connect you to an Internet service provider. 2) You have not installed a TCP/IP driver under the Network option in the Control Panel. 3) You do not have a modem or other form of physical Internet connection. Internet Play Error Messages Our Internet games currently return several numbered error messages along with instructions to contact Sierra for help. In order to assist you in troubleshooting these problems on you own, these errors are listed below along with explanations: 10024 Too many open files. (You have several Internet applications open at once). 10051 Server unreachable (servers down). Try again later. 10052 Server dropped connection. Attempt to reconnect. 10053 Connection aborted locally. Restart your computer and try again. 10054 Connection reset (bad connection). Attempt to reconnect. 10055 No resources available. Close any other applications and try again. 10060 Connection timed out (can't connect at game start). Restart. 10061 Connection refused (SIGS servers are down). Try again later. 10065 Servers are down. Try again later. If any other errors are reported, please contact Sierra as instructed. Can't Chat/Lose Game Connection in Internet Play If you repeatedly have trouble staying connected to Internet multiplayer games (you keep getting dumped out of the game back to SIGS), the problem may be in your Windows 95 setup. An incorrect setting in your Control Panel Network Configuration can cause the "point-to-point" WinSock connections used in Trophy Rivers to fail. To prevent these problems, try removing the dialup Network Clients and Protocols in your Win95 Network configuration, and then adding them right back in. This isn't too difficult and seems to clear up the problem on most machines. To do this: 1. Open your Win 95 Network Configuration program. You have two ways to open it: A. Right-click on Network Neighborhood, and then select Properties. B. From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel, then Network. 2. Select all of the items in the Configuration list box, and note those that are named or described as a Client or Protocol (the icons are different for each). Jot down the names (you'll need to add them back in later). 3. Select each Client or Protocol item in the Configuration windows and then click Remove. This doesn't permanently delete them; it just takes them out of the current setup. When done, click OK. 4. Win95 will then "Rebuild the driver database" and ask you restart Win95. 5. Once Win95 restarts, go back into Network Configuration, and click ADD. For each Client and Protocol you REMOVED, simply go down the list and ADD it back in. Click OK when done. 6. Once the driver database is rebuilt and you restart Win95 again, you should be good to go. If you continue to have communications problems in SIGS, you may need to re-install all of Windows 95. Refer to your Windows 95 documentation for the procedure. V] ADDITIONAL GAME DOCUMENTATION ========================================= Optimizing Game Speed Trophy Rivers features a lot of music and animation that may cause it to run slowly on some systems. For starters, select the LARGE installation if you can. Be sure to optimize your CD-ROM settings for maximum performance under Win 95. Also, you may not want to select video display resolutions above 800x600 and 256 colors. You can also speed up game performance by turning off some of the game options. Try turning off the WATER ANIMATIONS and the FIGHT MUSIC from the Options menu if the game runs slowly while you are fishing.
