Twelve years after being wrongly convicted and imprisoned on a remote planet, biodroid ex-marine captain Shad succeeds in releasing his hands from the shackels during transfer to the prison vessel 'Thras' and escapes, finding himself in the dark industrial prison corridors, liftshafts and airducts. Armed only with a pulserifle, you must fight your way past hundreds of deadly mutant prisonguards, blast through floors, ceilings and walls to escape from your prison. No-one has ever managed to escape from Thras. This is your primary objective. 5.2 Goal of Genocide -------------------------------- Genocide has one basic goal: Escape from the prison colony 'Thras'. 5.3 Main Menu ----------------------- When you start Genocide, a demo sequence of the game will begin. At any time, press "Esc" to pull up the Main Menu. There are a few types of objects: + Switches: Change these by pressing down; + Lifts/Platforms: Press up or down to make these move; some lifts or platforms only move in one direction; + Removable objects: They can be weapons, ammo, medikits, etc. Pick up these objects by walking over them. If you cannot pick up an object, it means you already have the maximum allowed amount of it; + Destructible objects: They can be barrels, cases, crumbled walls, etc. Shoot at these objects to destroy them; Destructible walls may reveal secret areas or shortcuts. ------------------- 6. BRIEFING ------------------- 6.1 Environment ------------------------- Several factors in your environment can affect your health or hinder your progress: + Explosions: All weapon fire creates explosions which will affect you if you are too close; + Fire: Fire delivers a lot of damage very quickly, so don't hang around; + Traps: There are a wide variety of traps in Genocide, although they cannot always be avoided, traps will never kill you instantly; + Secrets: Some areas are hidden, or secret areas. Finding them may reward you with more ammo or weapons, but may also unleash enemies. Secret areas are always recognizable by a different texture, or damage indicating that the section can be destroyed. 6.2 Items --------------- Armor: Increases your body armor; Health: Each box restores your health by 50%. 6.3 Ammunition ------------------------ The four types of weapons use three types of ammunition. You can pick up ammunition by walking over it. If you are unable to pick up a particular type of ammunition, you already have the maximum allowable amount of that ammunition. + Bullets: For the default pulserifle, and the MiniGun. Each box holds 50 shells. + Nails: For the Nail Gun. Each box holds 100 nails. + Rockets: For the Rocket Launcher. Each box holds 25 rockets. 6.4 Weapons --------------------- There are four types of weapons available in Genocide. + Pulse Rifle Effective 12mm long-range weapon; 8 rps with 30m effective range. + Nail Gun High 20 rps firing rate; limited 15m maximum effective range and projectile impact power. + MiniGun High projectile velocity and 40 rps firing rate; limited 20m maximum effective range. + Rocket Launcher 40mm Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher; 8m casualty radius. Use the hot keys 1-5 to cycle through the available weapons; if you have not picked up a weapon, you will not be able to use it. NOTE: When you run out of ammunition when using a weapon, Genocide automatically switches to the next available weapon. However, Genocide will always switch to a lower weapon, and never to the Rocket Launcher, because a close exploding stray rocket may kill you. --------------------------------- 7. EDITOR MANUAL ------------------------------- 9.1 Introduction ------------------------ The Genocide Level Editor allows you to create your own Genocide levels, or change existing levels. The Genocide level Editor is simple and intuitive to use, and requires no programming knowledge; you should however be familiar with the Editor's layout and technical terms. This manual describes how to use the Editor and the technical elements involved. Note: Remember that you should back up the supplied levels before you attempt to change them if you are not familiar with the Editor. Changing the supplied levels wrongly may corrupt the game, requiring you to reinstall the game. Note'': The Trial Version Editor of Genocide is save-disabled. You must purchase the Full Version of Genocide to save the levels you create. 9.2 Starting the Editor --------------------------------- To start the Genocide level editor, choose 'Go To Editor' from the Genocide in-game menu. Refer to the Genocide editor topic instructions on how to use the editor. Note that you are allowed to distribute any levels made with the editor, if the following applies: + You created the entire level from scratch; it is illegal to distribute any level supplied with Genocide, even if you used the Editor to alter it; + You do not charge any money or other kind of payment for it; Note that you may not distribute any of the levels that come with Genocide, even if you have changed them. This applies to the Full Version as well as any Shareware Version of Genocide. 9.3 Editor Basics -------------------------- Before you start creating your own levels, you should understand the technical elements of the levels and how the Editor deals with them. A level is basically built up from four layers, which 'lie on top of' each other. They are called the Background layer, the Foreground layer, the Lighting Layer and the Objects Layer. You can modify the individual layers in the Editor. You can add new enemy characters, change the lighting, or even change the entire level map. 9.4 Understanding Layers -------------------------------------- The Background layer provides the background used for parallax scrolling; it's the background you can sometimes see through the Foreground layer. The Foreground layer is the layer where all the action takes place; it's the layer on which the characters move, and where all the other objects ( lifts, stairs, etc. ) are located. All of the foreground graphics consist of cells/tiles, just like the background layer. However, the foreground layer has two different types of cells/tiles: + Open tiles: these tiles do not obstruct the player or any enemy characters; + Solid tiles: these tiles obstruct the player and enemies (for example, walls or floors). In addition, each tile can be either visible or hidden. Visible tiles are the default; invisible tiles can be used to create hidden passages or bonus areas, and will only become visible when the object blocking your access to them is destroyed. The Lighting layer provides all the spotlight lighting effects in the game, and the Object layer contains information on all of the objects in the game, including the enemy characters. The Object layer is also the layer where you can define 'links' between different objects. There are two different objects: start objects and end objects. Most objects are end objects, meaning they cannot have any effect on any other object. Start objects can ( but do not have to ) change the state of another object, which can even be off-screen. For example, when you define a link between a switch ( a start object ) and a door ( an end object ), the door will open when you operate the switch. You can easily distinguish between start and end objects visually: start objects have a red highlight border, while end objects have a green highlight border. In the Editor, you can only work on one layer at a time. The layer you are currently working on is shown at the bottom of the screen as the Mode selection. All of the Edit menu items ( Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste ) only apply to the layer you are currently working on; however, all of the File menu items ( New Map, Open Map, Save Map, Save Map As and Resize Map ) work on the entire level, i.e. selecting Save Map will save the entire Editor contents, including the Background, Foreground, Lighting and Object Layers. You can change the layer you are working on by selecting the relevant layer window from the Option menu. All of the layers are equal in size, and are divided into tiles or cells. Each tile or cell is 48 by 24 pixels in size. You can specify the desired level size, in tiles or cells, when you start a new level, but a level must at least 20x20 tiles or cells and must not exceed 200x200 tiles or cells. 9.5 Foreground Layer -------------------------------- The Foreground Layer is the layer where you define the 'look' of your level. This layer determines where your main character can and cannot go, what kind of graphic tiles or cells are used, etc. All of the foreground tiles can have different attributes: + Solid Tiles: These tiles( walls. etc.) will block any character; + Open Tiles: All non-solid tiles are open. These tiles are used to construct corridors, lift shafts, etc.; + Visible Tiles: This is the default for all tiles. These tiles cannot be destroyed, although they may show damage when hit; + Hidden Tiles: These tiles cannot be seen and show up as the default tile. Use these tiles to construct hidden sections. To create your Foreground Layer, first select this layer from the Options menu. If you want to add new graphic tiles to the layer, turn the Layer Window ON by selecting this option from the Window menu. You can Cut, Copy and Paste tiles or cells in this layer just like in a paint program. Place the cursor on one of the corners you wish to select, then left click and select the opposite corner. Left click again to pick up this section (If you have selected the Cut edit option, the section will be replaced by the default background tiles). The selected section is now ready to be placed anywhere on the map. To mirror the selection horizontally, press "x". To get rid of the current selection, press "Esc". 9.6 Lighting Layer --------------------------- The Lighting Layer is the layer where you define all of the lighting effects used in your level. All of the light sources available have different shapes, and are available as normal or strobe lights. To create your Lighting Layer, first select this layer from the Options menu. If you want to add new light sources to the layer, turn the Layer Window ON by selecting this option from the Window menu. Select the type of light source you want by left clicking on its icon, then place the light source on the map. You can Cut lights in this layer just like in the Foreground Layer, but you cannot Copy or Paste lights from the clipboard. A number of extra options are available in the Lighting Layer: + Automatic Selection: The lightsource located closest to the cursor is highlighted automatically; + Pressing the "spacebar" picks up the highlighted lightsource. You can then place it somewhere else or discard it; + Pressing the right mouse button and dragging the mouse at the same time will scale the highlighted lightsource. + To get rid of the current light, press "Esc". 9.7 Object Layer -------------------------- The Object Layer is the layer where you define all of the objects(sprites) used in your level. To create your Object Layer, first select this layer from the Options menu. If you want to add new objects to the layer, turn the Layer Window ON by selecting this option from the Window menu. Select the type of object you want by left clicking on its icon, then place the object on the map. You can Cut objects in this layer just like in the Foreground Layer, but you cannot Copy or Paste lights from the clipboard. Other features available in the lighting and object layers: + Automatic Selection: The object/light located closest to the cursor is highlighted automatically; + Pressing the "spacebar" picks up the highlighted object/light. You can then place it somewhere else or discard it; + Pressing the right mouse button on the highlighted object will bring up a sub menu with the object attributes. You can now adjust the object attributes, for example, if the object is light-sourced, the object's health, armor, etc. + To get rid of the current object/light, press "Esc". 9.8 Editor Menus -------------------------- FILE MENU ( keyboard: ALT + F ) + New Map ( keyboard: N ) This option starts a new level map. You will be prompted for the level size ( in tiles or cells ). + Open Map ( keyboard: O ) Loads a level map from disk. A Genocide level map filename always has the extension .wad. You cannot load any other file into the editor. + Save Map ( keyboard: S ) Saves the current level map to disk in the current directory. If you have not previously loaded a map, so that the current level map has no name, you will be prompted for the filename you wish to use. + Save Map As ( keyboard: A ) Saves the current level map to disk in the directory and with the filename you specify. All level maps will be saved with the extension .wad. + Resize Map ( keyboard: R ) This options resizes the level map you are currently working on. Note that entering a value smaller than the current map size will cause tiles or cells to be taken from the right and/or bottom side of the level map; entering a larger value than the current map size will add tiles or cells to the right and/or bottom side of the level map. A level map must be at least as big as the visible screen (25 x 25 tiles or cells) and cannot exceed 250 x 250 tiles or cells. NOTE: When you resize a level and make the new level smaller than the previous level, you will lose any tiles, objects and lighting which were in the original level but fall outside the new, smaller level. + Exit ( keyboard: X ) This options exits the Genocide Editor. If you have made any changes to the current level, you will be prompted to save any changes or exit without saving. EDIT MENU ( keyboard: ALT + E ) Note: All of the Edit Menu items only affect the current layer you are working on, and work on tile or cell level, not pixel level, only. + Undo ( keyboard: U ) This option undoes the changes you have just made with any of the edit menu items ( Cut, Copy and Paste ). However, it will not undo any other changes you have made, i.e. you cannot undo a level map resize. + Cut ( keyboard: C ) This option cuts the selected area from the current layer to the clipboard. The affected areas will be left blank. You can Paste any area you have previously cut out. Screen scrolling is disabled while in Cut mode; you cannot Cut any area larger than screen size. + Copy ( keyboard: O ) This option works the same as Cut, only the selected area will be left intact. You can Paste any area you have previously copied. Screen scrolling is disabled while in Copy mode; you cannot Copy any area larger than screen size. + Paste ( keyboard: P ) This options pastes the current selection from the clipboard onto the current layer. It has no effect if the clipboard is empty. If you attempt to paste an area that will extend beyond the level map, the selection will be automatically clipped. Screen scrolling is enabled during Paste. Note that any pasted images will remain on the clipboard, until replaced with either Cut or Copy. OPTIONS MENU ( keyboard: ALT + O ) + Toggle Mouse Scroll ( keyboard: M ) This option enables or disables scrolling the screen by using the mouse. To scroll the screen with the mouse, move the cursor close to the edge of the screen. If this option is off, use the cursor keys to scroll the screen. + Toggle Object Animation ( keyboard: A ) This option enables or disables the animation of the objects while in the editor. + Toggle Link Display ( keyboard: K ) This option enables or disables the display of links between two objects. + Toggle Bounding Display( keyboard: B ) This option enables or disables Bounding Box display while in the Foreground Layer. This option is useful for checking which tiles or cells are visible or invisible. Visible tiles are gray coded, while invisible tiles are red. + Toggle Auto Lighting( keyboard: U ) This option enables or disables Auto Lighting. Auto Lighting will automatically turn off lighting whenever the frame rate drops below 30 frames per second. You may want to disable Auto Lighting when you are working on a slow machine and want to view lighting even with slower frame rates. + Toggle Lighting( keyboard: I ) This option enables or disables lighting. You may want to disable lighting when the lighting interferes with the level design. Note that Auto Lighting will have no effect when lighting is turned off. + Foreground Layer ( keyboard: F ) This option makes the foreground layer the active layer. + Lighting Layer ( keyboard: L ) This option makes the lighting layer the active layer. + Object Layer ( keyboard: O ) This option makes the object layer the active layer. WINDOWS MENU ( keyboard: ALT + W ) + Layer Window ( keyboard: L ) This option will enable the display of the current layer window. A check mark will appear next to this option when the background window display is on. While in foreground mode, click on a tile to select it. ( You will automatically go to 'Paste' mode ). Scroll through the available tiles with the mouse. After placing a tile or cell, you can change the attribute of the tile to hidden or visible by right-clicking the tile on the map. While in lighting mode, click on a light type to select it. When you have placed a light, you can resize it horizontally and vertically by left clicking and dragging the mouse to achieve different lighting effects. Release the mouse to set the light to its new shape. While in object mode, click on an object's name to select it. After placing an object, you may create a link between objects if the object is a start object or end object. To establish a link between two objects, left click on the first object to highlight it. Then left click on the second object to establish a link. Note that you can only establish links between start and end objects. To remove a link, right click on the object. Error Message: " 'ddraw.dll' or 'dplay.dll' not found " and "GetCaps(): Failed" +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If you are running Genocide on a Windows 95 machine, you must have Microsoft DirectX 6.1 or later installed. If you are running Genocide on a Windows98 machine, you still need to upgrade to DirectX 6.1 or above. This type of error message indicates that you do not have DirectX installed, or DirectX is not installed properly. Install or re-install DirectX 6.1 or later. The latest version of DirectX is included on the Genocide CD-ROM. If you have obtained the Demo version of Genocide you can download DirectX free of charge from Microsoft at: http://www.microsoft.com/directx ---------------------------- 11. TIPS & TRICKS ---------------------------- This section describes some of the Tips and Tricks you can use while playing Genocide or using the Genocide Editor: + Kill enemy characters from far away If the weapon you are using is long range, you do not need to 'see' an enemy character to be able to kill it. Unless an enemy also has a long range weapon, it is safer to start your attack from far away. Most enemies can do a lot of damage when in close range combat. The downside of this strategy is that your shooting will give away your position to other enemies, which may not have noticed you otherwise. + Use the in-built Editor to your advantage during play You can use the in-built Editor at any time during play. You can even start the Editor, modify the level and continue play where you left off! This feature can be especially useful if you want to play-test a level while designing it. + Self-Repairing Enemies Some enemies, like the Demon, are self-repairing. This means they will try to run after taking a certain amount of damage and come back to attack after they have restored their health and armor. You cannot kill these enemies - you can only give them a good kicking. Make sure you get out of their way quick. + Trap Enemies Use the fact that most enemies will try to track you down to your advantage. Most will focus only on you and ignore other dangers, such as tracking guns. Try to lure enemies into areas with tracking guns, or try to close doors to seal off access to the section where you are. -------------------------------- 12.
