If you have the Autorun function enabled, the AutoRun (installation) screen should appear. Click on Install, and follow the on-screen instructions to install GULF WAR. If you have disabled the Autorun option or if it does not function correctly, open the Windows Start Menu, and select Run. Left-click on Browse and choose the letter of your CD-ROM drive from the list, then double-click on the file labeled Set_up.exe. Left-click on OK to begin installing GULF WAR; follow the on-screen instructions. ........................................... 2) System Requirements Windows 95/98 Pentium 166 32M Ram 150M Hard Drive space 4x CD-ROM Direct X 6.1 Microsoft Compatible Mouse Note: If using a processor slower than 233Mhz, a good deal of running speed may be gained by setting the Horizon Distance to 160. ........................................... 3) Gameplay Note that the CD must be in the drive at all times to play the game. All players must have a CD. Moving The Tank Around At the start of a scenario, you are automatically placed behind the controls of your Hammer. To move it, use the following keys: = Move forward = Move backward Your Hammer always considers "forward" the direction your turret is currently facing; by changing the direction you are "looking," you change the direction of travel. You change the direction your turret is facing by moving the mouse left, right, up, and down. Advanced Tank Controls For advanced tank commanders, you may "unlock" the turret from the direction the tank is facing. To do that, press the key. When you're in this mode, the turret aims at whatever the mouse is pointed to. However, the tank motion is controlled by the four arrow keys. still move you Forward/Backward and turn you left and right. There is an alternate set of key settings in the Options / Controls screen. Your Targeting Reticle is located in the center of your view screen. Use the mouse to move your Targeting Reticle over a target. Left-click to fire your Hammer's chain gun and right-click to fire the currently selected weapon. You can scroll through your available weapons by pressing the key above the arrow keys. ........................................... 4) ALT-TAB Key Use and other Windows 95/98 Information Do not run other programs in the background while running this game. This expressly includes messaging systems or ICQ. This game does not run in minimized windows, nor will it minimize to the taskbar. If saves are renamed in Windows 95/98 there is a high probability those saves will not work. This game does not support multi-monitor settings. If you feel you must use a multi-monitor arrangement, the game will most certainly crash if you click on the "other" desktop. Multiple clicks on start icons, loading screens and the like will not help, and can occasionally cause problems. Mouse speed and sensitivity is set in Windows 95/98, not in the game. Sound controls and music volume work differently on different hardware configurations. If any difficulty is found in controlling music or sound effect levels, your card may need you to use the Windows 95/98 sound controllers. While it "is" possible to remove the Heads Up Display from the screen, that will also remove the targeting reticle. Hammer Command Senior Staff strongly recommend NOT disabling what you aim with...such action will also disable the mission boundary alert and the overhead map. ........................................... 5) Multi-Player Information The "Multi" button on the Main Menu will lead you into Multi-player gaming. Note that if the host cancels out of a game, it will remain visible for some time. This is a DirectPlay issue. It is best to use a distinct name for each new game to avoid confusion. When in Multiplayer, players have a respawn location. Some uncivilized players will kill you at the respawn location. You will note that you get a camera view of the area in which you die. You may choose to wait until a big firefight has settled itself before re-entering the game. If the game should end while you are "dead" you will need to exit normally - or drive about the lonely map killing buildings and crates! This happens a lot in two player multiplayer games. MULTIPLAYER GAMEPLAY NOTE - Weapons work differently in Multiplayer - Hey! You are hunting other supertanks now! Buildings will die faster - and the OASIS device is shut off...but there are power ups...you have MLRS strikes for other tanks, and FAM for buildings, bushes and trees. When playing on a 166Mhz machine it sometimes helps to run a Disk Defragmenting program before playing Multiplayer. We use peer-to-peer DirectPlay connections for modem play. This sometimes simply will not connect when newer US Robotics internal modems are trying to connect with older Newcom external modems. Players playing a multiplayer game on a LAN will not be able to play with people using modem protocol. In a Multiplayer game on Heat or Mplayer, make sure to run the Version Wizard before attempting to start a multiplayer game. If Version Wizard is not run, it will cause the game to abort and return the user to the On-line service lobby. ........................................... 6) Audio Controls; Video Card And Other Hardware Drivers / Direct X We seek to optimize game performance to the latest available drivers from the manufacturers. Please use those. Some reference drivers can cause slower or non-performance. Left-click on Audio from the Game Options panel to bring up the Audio Options panel. On this panel are controls to adjust the volume at which Music and Sound FX are played. Use the slider button to change the volume, increasing the volume to the right, decreasing to the left. From this panel you can also set the track of music you wish to play on your CD, and have it either play that track continuously, play the tracks of the CD in order and start the CD over after the last track, or randomly play tracks from the CD. Note: If your system lacks the drivers to use any of the audio Options sliders, they will not display. Note: If you have a media player running (Windows CD player, video player, etc.) you will need to exit that application before you can affect your game audio options. This game requires Direct X 6.1 to run. Slower machines using 4 meg video cards should try both accelerated mode and the software mode. Then run the mode you prefer. If you have a SoundBlaster Live or SoundBlaster PCI 128 sound card, it may run very slowly on a few processors. If this happens: In Windows go to the Multimedia option under the Control Panel. Select the Advanced Properties button, then the Performance tab and turn Hardware Acceleration under Audio Playback all the way down. If you have a Cyrix Mx and a voodoo 2 with the latest reference drivers 3.03.00, right before loading system requirements checker the installer will crash. With this configuration, use the Diamond Monster 2 drivers from the Diamond site to run the game. ........................................... 7) Purchasing Software You can order other 3DO software directly from 3DO through our order web page at http://www.3do.com/direct, or you can call the 3DO Direct line at 800-336-3506 (outside the United States at 650-261-3227). ........................................... 8) Contacting Customer Support For technical problems or questions: 3DO Customer Support Website: http://www.3do.com/support (includes an email question form) E-mail: customer-support@3do.com Phone: Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, at (650) 261-3454.
