INSTALLING THE GAME ======================= Installation advice ---------------------- 1. "Hype - the Time Quest" is a high-performance multimedia program. This game was created to get the most out of your multimedia computer. Before installing the program or before starting to play, you are advised to close any applications that may still be open. 2. Make sure that you have the latest Drivers for your 3D card. This is very important to guarantee maximum game performance. Refer to "3D CARD DRIVERS" for more information about this. Installation ------------ * Close any windows that are open and quit any other application * Insert the CD-ROM into the drive The program will start automatically and prompt you to either to install the game, or to play if the game has already been installed on your computer. If the program does not start automatically when you place the CD-ROM in the drive, double click on the "My computer" icon then double click on the CD-ROM icon. If the program still does not start, run the SETUP.EXE program on the CD-ROM. To access the SETUP.EXE on the CD-ROM: * Double click on the "My Computer" icon * Position the cursor on the CD-ROM and right click the mouse * Choose Explore * Double click on SETUP.EXE On installation: You will be offered three types of installation, depending on the disk space available on your computer: Full installation Medium installation Minimum installation Full vs Medium vs Minimum installation ------------------------------------------------ * With the full installation, all the data is copied onto the hard disk. This allows much faster loading of the levels. * When you perform a full or medium installation all the sounds will be copied onto the hard disk. * When you perform a minimum installation, only voices are copied onto the hard disk. Optimized vs non optimized -------------------------- * When you choose an "Optimized" type installation, the voices will all be loaded into memory at the start of the game and in this case, you will need more RAM to play (64Mb of RAM or more). * When you choose an installation type that does not offer the "Optimized" choice, the voices will be loaded in real time, to avoid excessive use of your RAM. It is always preferable to load the voices into memory ("Optimized" installation) because loading them from the hard disk can cause a slight delay. However, if you have a configuration with 32Mb of RAM, we strongly advise you to choose the real time (non optimized) option. WARNING! ***** Depending on your system, if you choose to load the voices in real time (non optimized), you may have sound problems (delays, repetitions, stuttering). Access path --------------- You then have to choose the location on the hard disk where the game will be installed. The default installation path is "C:\Ubi Soft\Hype - The Time Quest". III. UBI ASSISTANT ================================= The Ubi Assistant is a program run after the installation to help you choose the best configuration for your computer depending on your 3D graphics card. You can still access the program after the installation is finished. You can choose different types of game configuration on your computer. This configuration depends on your 3D graphics card and how much memory you have in your computer. Depending on your 3D graphics card ----------------------------- "Hype - The Time Quest" is optimized to function with two types of 3D card drivers: DirectX 6.1 and Glide3.01. If you have a 3DFX graphics card, we recommend that you install this version. The game's performance will be enhanced. The second choice is the DirectX installation. This option must not be used with Windows NT 4 because DirectX 6.1 is not supported by this operating system. You can choose the option that suits you best in the first selection Box in Ubi Assistant. 1- If your card functions with 3Dfx technology, choose the Glide3 version. You may have to update your card's drivers, 2- If your card is not 3Dfx then choose the DirectX 6.1. version. You can then choose the graphics card that will be used by the game in the second selection box. This will only be used if you have more than one graphics card. In both cases, refer to your card's user manual to find out the specific features. If the installation system detects an outdated version of the DirectX "drivers" required, it will install the correct versions of these drivers if it deems it necessary. Only these versions will enable you to play "Hype - The Time Quest". At the start of the game, the versions of the drivers will be tested and an error message will inform you if you do not have the latest drivers. WARNING ******* * If you are using an AGP 3D graphics card. The game requires a minimum of 8 Mb AGP memory. This value can be adjusted in your computer's BIOS. If you do not have enough AGP memory, an error message will indicate this at the start of the game. * If you use an AGP 3D graphics card and you only have 32Mb of RAM. You may encounter difficulties running the game properly. In this case, refer to the AGP section below in order to reduce the amount of AGP memory used. IV. GRAPHICAL OPTIONS ====================== You will find these options in the "Advanced Graphical Configuration" option in Ubi Assistant. "Lowest Graphical Quality" mode ------------------------------ This mode is for running the game with less powerful configurations (reduced performance 3D cards, 32 Mb of RAM, etc.). When you enable this mode the graphics will be degraded in order to improve the game's performance. Use this mode only if the game is too slow, or if you have problems running it with lower performance 3D cards. AGP: --- If you have an AGP 3D graphics card, you can specify the amount of RAM that will be used for the graphics. By leaving the setting at 'AUTO', the game will automatically determine the optimum memory space for the graphics. Having said this, if you only have 32Mb of RAM and the game slows down considerably from time to time, we advise you to set the AGP memory to a value less than or equal to 2 Mb (2048). WARNING ******* The amount of RAM reserved for the AGP is also determined by the BIOS of your computer. Refer to your vendor for more information. MipMapping ---------- Mipmapping allows you to obtain superior graphical quality. However, this requires more resources. If you prefer to run the game without this option, you can diable it by switching it OFF. In AUTO mode, the game will choose whether mipmapping will be present or not depending on your 3D graphics card. If you choose ON, the mippmapping will always be enabled. V. 3D CARD DRIVERS ======================= It is EXTREMELY important that you have all the latest drivers for your 3D graphics card. All the manufactures of 3D cards frequently update their drivers. It is very likely that the drivers that you installed when you purchased the card are already outdated. By installing the latest drivers for your card you will correct any problems and improve the performance of the game. However, updating the drivers requires several fairly complex steps. For cards using 3Dfx technology ------------------------------- The drivers required by the game are Glide version 3.01 or later the latest DirectX drivers are included on the CD-ROM. To get these drivers: * Double click on the My Computer icon * Right click on the CD-ROM icon * Choose Explore * Click on the 3Dfx directory * Choose the directory depending on your 3D graphics card. To help you, we have included a document on the CD-ROM that will guide you in the installation of the latest drivers. Please refer to the "Installing Glide 3.txt" document on the CD-ROM. To access the "Installing Glide 3.txt" document * Double click on the My Computer icon * Right click on the CD-ROM icon * Choose "explore" * Choose "Installing Glide 3.txt" For cards not using 3Dfx technology ----------------------------------- The game automatically installs DirectX 6.1. However, you need the latest drivers for your 3D card. You can retrieve these drivers from your graphics card manufacturer's internet site. Refer to the "3D graphics cards supported by the game" section for the internet addresses of the manufacturers. DirectX 6.1 : www.microsoft.com GLide 3.01 : www.3dfx.com VI. ADVICE ========== Once installed, you can run the game from the Windows "Start" menu or by reinserting the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive (if "Auto play" is enabled). The default path is: "Start/Programs/Ubi Soft Games/Hype - The Time Quest/Play Hype - The Time Quest" To be able to play the game, the CD-ROM must always be placed in the CD-ROM drive. If you remove the CD during the game, the game may start to behave strangely and you will have to quit and restart (with the CD-ROM). When you start the game, the main game menu is displayed. (Refer to the "Menus" section). "ALT"+ "TAB" ------------ On certain computers the use of ALT + TAB may cause problems, and even close down the game. If this happens then we recommend that you update your graphics card drivers. We have noticed problems with the Voodoo2 card. For example, with Windows NT, you can use the ALT + TAB with version 3.01.00 of Glide but it seems to cause problems with version 3.01.01. Loading levels -------------- Loading a level of the "Hype - the Time Quest" game can take some time due to the large number of graphical elements contained in the level. The load progress bar is not always accurate since the load time depends on the performance of your system. Don't worry if your progress bar is full and you still have to wait a few more seconds. How to quit the game ------------------------ To leave the game, press the "ESC" key to pause the game. Choose "Main Menu". From the main menu, select "Quit". You will be prompted to confirm your choice. VII. MAXIMISING THE GAME'S PERFORMANCE ====================================== "Hype - the Time Quest" will play very well on some systems and less well on others. The performance and the smooth running of the game are directly related to the performance of your PC, 3D graphics card and sound card. Here is some advice for maximizing the smooth running of the game. 1. If your card supports Glide technology (all Voodoo cards), select this type of installation rather than the one proposed by default. Refer to the "Graphics cards supported by the game" section. 2. Reduce the quality of the textures. For an explanation of the method used to reduce the quality of the textures, refer to section IX. MENUS. 3. If you want to optimize the game in more detail, refer to section III. UBI ASSISTANT. VIII. UNINSTALLING THE GAME =========================== If you have already installed the game on your computer, it is possible to uninstall it or change the type of installation. If you want to change the type of installation, it is preferable to uninstall the game first, otherwise some files may take up unnecessary space on your hard disk. To uninstall the game, choose the uninstall option from the main menu or from the Windows "Start" menu via the following path: "Programs\Ubi Soft\Hype - the Time Quest" choose the "uninstall Hype - the Time Quest" option. IX. MENUS =========== Adjusting the Graphics quality ------------------------------- "Hype - the Time Quest" offers you very high graphics quality. However, depending on your computer's configuration, the volume of the graphics can slow down the game. You can access the picture control menu by selecting "Options" from the main menu, then "picture". You can adjust the "Graphics quality", the "screen size" and the "textures" by moving the cursors. "Graphics quality" allows you to modify the importance of certain visual elements which require a lot of processing. Hype's shadow is an example. "screen size" reduces the display surface on your screen and may improves the smoothness of the game. "Textures" is for modifying the quality of the textures. The lower the level, the smoother the game will be. Adjusting the volume -------------------- Some sound cards do not respond well when you adjust the volume in certain applications. If you have trouble adjusting the volume from the game, adjust the volume of your computer manually by double-clicking on the speaker icon at the bottom right of your Windows screen or by going into the control panel on your PC. TROUBLESHOOTING ============================================= Non-existent or faulty files ---------------------------------- The game may not be able to find the right files on your hard drive if they do not exist or if they are faulty. In this case, you must reinstall the program. To do this, you do not need to uninstall the game. Simply restart the installation in the same way as you did the first time. No sound in the game. -------------- If you do not hear the sounds from the start of the game: * Quit the game. * Check that the volume in Windows is not set to "mute". * Normally, the sound should be at 50%. Loss of sound -------------- If you reach a point where there is no longer sound or music in the game. * Quit the game * Then restart your computer * Then, restart the game and reload your game Graphics Resolution Problem in Windows -------------------------------------- If there is a problem in the game which suddenly takes you back to Windows, the initial graphic resolution may not have been restored. Typically your desktop will be larger than normal and you will no longer see the application icons.
