ADDITIONAL GAME INFORMATION * Minimum System Requirements -Pentium 90 -16 MB RAM -2X CD-ROM -SVGA Color Graphics * Changes from version 4.0 to 4.1 Designer: - Works on NT 4.0 systems with service pack 3 (see very specific installation instructions below) - Elevation information added to status bar. - JNSE 5 pin import bug fixed. Game: - Increased the speed of netplay. - Fixed sporadic crash that occurred after 20+ rounds have been played with one golfer. - The refresh button when joining a multiplayer game is now working properly in all cases. - In multiplayer games, added the ability to watch other players aim and see their shot points. - NT 4.0 compatible (see very specific installation instructions below) - Fixed problem where swing meter would occasional jump during swing. - Fixed bug where CD was being accessed needlessly. - Fixed a bug in overwriting recorded golfer rounds. - Drive Distance is now appearing on Info Bar after the hit. - Replaced "Hole in one's" with "Holes in one." - Ave. Hazard and OB has been removed from stats. - Properly saves stats info on holes in one, and double eagles. - In Skins and Match Play, got rid of over/under par score and replaced it with more relevant Information (Holes won, or Holes Up or Down). *Scoring in Skins and Matchplay - In both Match and Skins play we have changed the scoring that appears on the info bar. - In Skins the number that appears represents the number of holes won (not the number of skins won). For official scoring please check the scorecard. - Matchplay is a 2 player game therefore the scoring on the info bar is relevant only for two players. If you are playing more than 2 players, the scorecard will show the exact score. *Multiplayer games with version 4.1 vs. version 4.0. Although it is possible to play multiplayer games where version 4.0 and 4.1 play simultaneously, we strongly encourage you to only play games where the version numbers are the same. Please encourage any playing partners using 4.0 to upgrade to 4.1. The patch is avaialable for free download at www.accolade.com *DirectX Microsoft will soon be releasing DirectX 5.0. If you plan to upgrade, please note that most games that support DirectX, including Jack Nicklaus 4, will require a full DirectX upgrade. Do not just install part of either version. Jack Nicklaus 4 may crash, freeze your computer or not run at all if you are not running a full DirectX version. *For those who don't read manuals, here is a summary of how to play: Basic Controls: Right/Left Arrow Aiming Up/Down Arrow Intensity (easy or hard swing) Control Key and Rt/Lt Arrow Fade/Draw shot Control Key and Up/Dn Arrow High/Low shot All controls can also be made with the mouse. Swing Meter Click on the golfer or hit the space bar to bring up the meter. Using the left mouse button, the space bar, or the enter key, click once to start meter, click again at power mark (top) and again at accuracy mark (bottom). The power target corresponds to clubs distance as seen in the Club Info area and will be accurate based on shot hit off level fairway with no wind (in other words, you will need to compensate for wind and shots out of rough, sand, etc.). Also, for full swings, the distance displayed for the club info represents the distance the ball will travel in the air and does not take roll into account (for all clubs except the putter). Right Click Menu Use right click menu to access the most common features. Animate Grid Choose Animate Grid in the right click menu to get additional terrain help. *Keyboard Shortcuts Control key + S (Save) Control key + O (Load) Control key + N (Send Message) Control key + L (Clear Message) Control key + V (Custom View) Control key + G (Animate Grid) Control key + C (Cross Section) Control key + R (Scorecard) Control key + X (End Game) Alt key + F4 (Exit) F1 (Help contents) *Display Resolution The default installation settings for the screen resolution display of Jack Nicklaus 4 is a maximum of 800 x 600. If you are running in a display lower than this (640 x 480), the game will adjust to this resolution. If you run your computer at a resolution higher than 800 x 600 (e.g. 1024 x 768), you can display the game full screen by doing the following: -Choose Preferences from the Options menu -Set the Resolution option to "Full Screen" -Click OK -Quit and restart the game Note that running in higher resolutions may affect performance, depending on the amount of your computer's RAM and the processor speed. If you would like to display the game at full screen, but notice a degradation in performance, try different settings for Detail Level in the Preferences dialog. Experiment with different resolutions and Detail Levels to find your optimal performance level. *Align Grid to Golfer There are two options for aligning the grid on the greens: Align with the screen (default option) or Align with the golfer. The default option is preferred when you want the horizontal lines in the grid to be parallel to the bottom of the screen on a flat green. On a countoured green, the default option will allow you to see horizontal contours in the green as changes in the horizontal lines. Aligning the grid to the golfer orients the grid so that the vertical lines of the grid are parallel with a line that is drawn between the golf ball and the hole. Using this method in conjunction with "Animate Grid" will help show contours of the green relative to the straight line that goes between the ball and the hole. To change between these options, choose Preferences in the Options menu. When "Align grid to Golfer" is unchecked, the grid will be aligned to the bottom of the screen. Checking "Align with Golfer" will set the grid so that it is aligned with the line between the golf ball and the hole. *Game Formats The "Certified Game" format is divided into 3 separate formats: Pro, Scratch, and Handicap. This is a special version of Stroke Play designed exclusively for officially sanctioned contests and competitions. Competitions will be announced for a specific course and skill level. Current game settings will be overridden so that all competitions are played under normal wind and clear conditions. Pros will always hit off of the black tees and use pin position 3. Scratch competitors will always hit off of the blue tees and use pin position 2. Handicap golfers will always hit off of the white tees and use pin position 1. *Putting Tip: On very short putts, notice that the minimum power for a putter is 6 feet. This means you should click well before the power point to hit with less power. *Reading Greens After looking at the grid on the green, if you are still in doubt of the slope of the green use the Animate Grid feature and watch how the grid hits the green. *View All Recorded Golfers In the Choose Golfer window, clicking the View All button will only show you golfers that are on the hard drive. It will not show you the recorded golfers on the Jack Nicklaus 4 CD-ROM. The CD-ROM golfers will be visible for the courses they are recorded for. *Error Message regarding Network Play Should you ever receive the message "Network error while calculating shot," this simply means that the networked computers have shown the shots differently on each computer, but the game will automatically realign the lies of the balls to match each other for the next shot. *Recorded Golfers If you do not have Record Golfers selected, you can turn this option on at any time during your round to record your entire round. If you do not have this option selected and you complete your round, you cannot go back and record the round. *The Game and Designer together Opening the same golf course with the Game and Designer could slow down performance and potentially cause a conflict. Try to avoid this. *Establishing a Handicap In order to establish a handicap, you must play a minimum of 10 rounds on a rated course without having mulligans turned on. If you play with mulligans, your round will not count towards your handicap. *Modem Games In order to end your phone connection established by a modem game, you will need to exit Jack Nicklaus 4 entirely. *2 Wood This is a lofted driving wood. Like the driver, it works best off the tee; using it from the fairway will cause more erratic shots. *Aiming Arrow When moving the aiming arrow, if the arrow keys are held down and then released when the arrow is in the desired position, you will have more control. Repeatedly tapping the arrow keys can sometimes fill the keyboard buffer with more arrow commands than you may want. *Recorded Golfers and Bingo Bango Bongo When recording golfers, if you used any gimmes, you won't be able to play against that recorded golfer in Bingo, Bango, Bongo games. *Multiplayer Connections on PCs without Network Cards Microsoft DirectPlay may have problems connecting computers when a computer does not have a network card. If you try to connect a PC with a network card to a PC without a network card together via serial link, you may occasionally experience inability to connect. Should you experience this, we recommend that you configure the game so the PC WITHOUT the network card hosts the game. Also, should you lose a connection while trying this, restart your computer before trying again. If you are still experience problems, Microsoft's IPX/SPX Protocol is probably needlessly present. To remove it: -Click on the Start button on your Windows 95 Taskbar -Navigate to Settings and choose Control Panels -Double click the Network Icon -Look in the Window under the Configuration tab for the IPX/SPX protocol; select it by clicking once on it. -Click the Remove button. -Follow the instructions on screen and click OK *Windows95 Background Activities Because Windows95 will continue to perform background operations while Jack Nicklaus 4 is running, you may occasionally experience a choppy, or interrupted swing meter. Although we cannot prevent this, you can cancel a swing before it is completed if you right click prior to hitting your accuracy click or key press. This will take practice, but it is one way to compensate for Windows95 taking over the game's operations. *DirectX and Sound Jack Nicklaus 4 uses DirectX 3.0 from Microsoft for playing sounds. On some computers, the installer provided with DirectX may occasionally not install the correct sound driver. If you experience dropped, or intermittent sound, try reinstalling DirectX via the "Custom" install option, or visit Microsoft's web page (www.microsoft.com) to get the latest version of DirectX 3.0 *Dropping Players from Multiplayer Skins, Bingo Bango Bongo and Match Play If you are playing Skins, Bingo Bango Bongo or Match Play with 3 or 4 PCs, dropping a player will cause the scoring to become inaccurate. *Internet Connection with 4 Players You may experience difficulty connecting 4 players using an Internet TCP/IP connection when all 4 players come from unique domains. *Sound Support Some computers with double-speed (2x) CD-ROMs may experience "scratchy" sound in the opening video. *Flyby Narration Jack Nicklaus is narrating the flybys for Muirfield Village...thanks, Jack! ********************************************************* ********************************************************* 2. ADDITIONAL DESIGNER INFORMATION *Editing Courses on CD You can open and change any of the 5 courses that come with the game. We STRONGLY recommend that if you do so, please give the course a new name by choosing "Save as" from the File menu. If you change the course that is installed on your hard drive and don't rename it. The rounds that have been recorded (e.g. Jack Nicklaus' rounds) will no longer work with the course. If you accidentally save over one of the 5 courses, copy the course from your CD to your hard drive, then "Add" the course in the after clicking "Course" from the New Game menu. *The Game and Designer together Opening the same golf course with the Game and Designer could slow down performance and potentially cause a conflict. Try to avoid this. *More on Horizons Changing the horizon (described on page 47) deserves greater explanation. In the hole overhead view, you will see the View Arrow that controls the camera angle. The default direction is pointing to the right. When you open a Rendered Window by pressing the space bar, you will see a horizon at the end of your hole. If you return to the hole overhead window, and choose Sky and Horizon from the Edit menu, you will see arrow icons on the top of the horizon artwork on screen. These arrows correspond to the View Arrow in the hole overhead. A specific example may help: -Open a hole overhead window -Make sure the View Arrow is pointing to the right -Press the space bar to open a rendered window -Return to the hole overhead window -Choose Sky and Horizon from the Edit Window -Use the scroll bar on the bottom of the horizon art to move the right facing arrow on the top of your screen -Notice that this portion of the horizon is the same horizon seen in your rendered window. Now, if you place the mouse over an arrow icon on the top of the horizon artwork and drag it to a new location, the horizon artwork under the arrow will match the horizon seen in your rendered window once you click OK and the space bar to update your rendered window. *Tip on altering Elevations Having a rendered view of your hole open with Auto Render turned on is the easiest way to alter elevations. Position your windows on screen so any changes you make to the hole overhead window are immediately seen in rendered view. *Tips on Auto Render There are times when it is to your advantage turn Auto Render on, and there are times when it is best turned off. For example, when you are altering elevation data, it helps to have a rendered window visible with Auto Render on. If you are doing a large edit on a terrain shape, it may make sense to turn Auto Render off, then manually render when you have finished your work. Experiment with this setting to find what you are most comfortable with. *Slope Commands The manual incorrectly states that the "east" edge of the hole info window is the point that equals "forward." The correct edge that equals "forward" should be described as the "south" edge. ********************************************************* ********************************************************* 3. CORRECTIONS TO THE PRINTED MANUAL PAGE 12: "Best Score Competition- Championship" should be changed to "Best Score Competition-Pro." PAGE 13: Under Selecting a Course, step 2 should read "Click on course name to choose a course, then click OK." PAGE 13: Under Selecting a Pin Location, the pin location choices are #1, #2 and #3, not easy, moderate, and difficult. PAGE 27: Item #4 under How to Edit a Hole, the amount of hole that you will be able to see after zooming will depend on the size of your monitor and screen resolution of your monitor. If you cannot see your entire hole after zooming, use the scroll bars to see the hidden parts of your hole. PAGE 27: Item #5 and 6 under How to Edit a Hole, the reference to moving the View Arrow should also say that you need to drag the arrow with your mouse over the Circle portion of the View Arrow; dragging the Arrow portion will alter the camera angle. PAGE 27: Under How to Alter the Fairway, #1, the line should read "the existing fairway includes nine (not eight) boundary points". PAGE 34: Under How to Edit and Create Elevation Shapes, the TIP refers to activating the Terrain and Outlines. See pages 58 and 59 for how to uses Terrain and Outline Views. PAGE 40: Under Saving a Course Snapshot, this command changes to Save a Hole Snapshot when you are in the Hole overhead window. PAGE 48: Under Creating Objects, item #5, the cursor for placing objects is not a cross hair, it is a hand with sparks highlighting its index finger. PAGE 53: Under Pin Placement, the options are pins 1, 2, and 3 (not easy, moderate, and difficult). You can place any of the three pins in easy or challenging locations. ********************************************************* ********************************************************* 4.
