Orient the holes using this wind direction in order to set the prevailing wind for a specific hole. (Example: if you want wind to primarily be at your back on a hole, orient the hole so the tee side of the hole is towards the bottom of the screen, and the green side of the hole is towards the top of the screen.)] * Version 5.0 can not play a network game with Version 5.1 The patch version will not be allowed to connect to a non-patch version for network play. * Changing the Grid Color The grid color can be changed by adding rgb values to a command line attached to the Jack5.exe file. There are several ways to accomplish this, such as altering the shortcut in your Start menu, creating a new shortcut and placing it in a new location, or entering the command line via the Run menu. Following is a description of how to change your grid color by changing the shortcut in your Start menu: * Open Microsoft Explorer. * Find the shortcut to Jack Nicklaus 5 in programs/start menu (Usually it is found in your windows directory under start menu/programs/jack Nicklaus 5) * Right mouse click on the Jack Nicklaus 5 shortcut and select properties. * Select the Shortcut tab and find the section labeled Target. A line of text similar to this will appear: "C:\Program Files\Accolade\Jack5\JACK5.EXE" * After the last quotation mark, type the command that will change the grid color. The syntax is as follows: [space]-grid [r value, g value, b value] EXAMPLE: "C:\Program Files\Accolade\Jack5\JACK5.EXE" -grid0,0,255 will give you a blue grid NOTE ABOUT RGB Values r, g, and b are the red, green, and blue values that, when mixed together, determine the color of your grid. Determining a color based on these values can be done using popular image editing software such as Photoshop or Paintshop Pro. Listed below are several rgb values with their colors. * Select OK * Start Jack 5 using the Start menu, and when you use the grid next, your color will be used for the grid. (NOTE: To use this customized Grid you MUST begin the game using the altered shortcut on your Start menu. Here are a few other RGB values you might try, or you can create your own: powder blue -grid95,192,235 salmon -grid237,107,92 hot pink -grid248,122,169 light grey -grid200,200,200 medium grey -grid100,100,100 white -grid255,255,255 ultramarine -grid86,71,167 deep purple -grid150,31,184 The numbers are RGB Color Values *Gameplay Summary: Basic Controls: Right/Left Arrow Aiming Up/Down Arrow Intensity (easy or hard swing) Control Key and Rt/Lt Arrow Fade/Draw shot Control Key and Up/Dn Arrow High/Low shot All controls can also be made with the mouse. Swing Meter Click on the golfer, hit the space bar, or double click on the aiming arrow (if it is visible) to bring up the meter. Using the left mouse button, the space bar, or the enter key, click once to start meter, click again at power mark (top) and again at accuracy mark (bottom). The power target corresponds to clubs distance as seen in the Club Info area and will be accurate based on shot hit off level fairway with no wind (in other words, you will need to compensate for wind and shots out of rough, sand, etc.). Also, for full swings, the distance displayed for the club info represents the distance the ball will travel in the air and does not take roll into account (for all clubs except the putter). Right Click Menu Use right click menu to access the most common features. Animate Grid Choose Animate Grid in the right click menu to get additional terrain help. *Keyboard Shortcuts Control key + S (Save) Control key + O (Load) Control key + N (Send Message) Control key + L (Clear Message) Control key + V (Custom View) Control key + G (Animate Grid) Control key + C (Cross Section) Control key + R (Scorecard) Control key + X (End Game) Alt key + F4 (Exit) F1 (Help contents) *Display Resolution The default installation settings for the screen resolution display of Jack Nicklaus 5 is a maximum of 1024 x 768. If you are running in a display lower than this (640 x 480), the game will adjust to this resolution. If you run your computer at a resolution higher than 800 x 600 (e.g. 1152 x 864), you can display the game full screen by doing the following: -Choose Preferences from the Options menu -Set the Resolution option to "Full Screen" -Click OK -Quit and restart the game Note that running in higher resolutions may affect performance, depending on the amount of your computer's RAM and the processor speed. If you would like to display the game at full screen, but notice a degradation in performance, try different settings for Detail Level in the Preferences dialog. Experiment with different resolutions and Detail Levels to find your optimal performance level. One final option you may try to speed up play is setting the camera to "Tower." Playing from this view will speed up play. *Deactivating Aiming Arrow The aiming arrow can be deactivated bydouble-clicking on it. This feature is especially useful with HUDs On for Aim turned off. *Move overhead Camera with keys The I, J, K, and M keys will move the overhead camera north, west, east, and south. *HUDs On for Aim Checking this option in the Preferences dialog box will keep the Info Bar and other HUD items up while you aim your shot. Selecting this option will slow down the performance of the aiming arrow. *Moveable HUDs All of the HUDs (Info Bar, Hole Overhead, etc.) are moveable. When moving the swing meter, be careful not to click in the center circle; this area begins the meter. Also, the Hole Overhead is defaulted to a "locked" position to make aiming with the white line easier. To change this setting, right click on the Overhead and uncheck "Lock Position. *Redraw Perspective The tilde (~) key will redraw your perspective. This can slightly cock the camera to give a better view. *Reading Greens After looking at the grid on the green, if you are still in doubt of the slope of the green use the Animate Grid feature and watch how the grid hits the green. *Effects of Fog Fog can really slow your roll down so compensate while aiming your putt. *Notes regarding Network Play and NetAccolade By the time your read this note, the NetAccolade Matching Server should be operational. To receive the update to Jack Nicklaus 5 compatible with this server, please visit our update site on the web at www.accolade.com/netaccolade/index While your network opponent is playing, try to avoid accessing menu items; doing so could interfere with your opponents play, or even cause your game to experience anomolies. Should you ever receive the message "Network error while calculating shot," this simply means that the networked computers have shown the shots differently on each computer, but the game will automatically realign the lies of the balls to match each other for the next shot. *If you have problems joining a modem or serial game: -You may experience a problem joining a Modem or Serial game if you had hosted in the previous game. If this is the case, exiting and restarting Jack Nicklaus 5 should correct the problem. -Check the flow control settings for both your Modem and Com Port. If either the host or joining player has an incorrect flow control setting, the host's game will not be visible to the joining player. In most cases, each player will need to select HARDWARE (RTS/CTS) Flow control. Flow control settings for both the Modem and Com Port can be changed via the Windows 95 device manager, located in the System Properties control panel. *Establishing a Handicap In order to establish a handicap, you must play a minimum of 10 rounds on a rated course without having mulligans turned on. If you play with mulligans, your round will not count towards your handicap. *2 Wood This is a lofted driving wood. Like the driver, it works best off the tee; using it from the fairway will cause more erratic shots. *Aiming Arrow When moving the aiming arrow, if the arrow keys are held down and then released when the arrow is in the desired position, you will have more control. Repeatedly tapping the arrow keys can sometimes fill the keyboard buffer with more arrow commands than you may want. *Recorded Golfers and Bingo Bango Bongo When recording golfers, if you used any gimmes, you won't be able to play against that recorded golfer in Bingo, Bango, Bongo games. *50 Character File Name Limit When naming your saved games or saved shots, do not exceed 50 characters in the name of your file. *Dropping Players from Multiplayer games If you are playing Skins, Bingo Bango Bongo or Match Play with 3 or 4 PCs, dropping a player will cause the scoring to become inaccurate. ********************************************************* 2. ADDITIONAL DESIGNER INFORMATION *Tip on altering Elevations Having a rendered view of your hole open with Auto Render turned on is the easiest way to alter elevations. Position your windows on screen so any changes you make to the hole overhead window are immediately seen in rendered view. *Tips on Auto Render There are times when it is to your advantage turn Auto Render on, and there are times when it is best turned off. For example, when you are altering elevation data, it helps to have a rendered window visible with Auto Render on. If you are doing a large edit on a terrain shape, it may make sense to turn Auto Render off, then manually render when you have finished your work. Experiment with this setting to find what you are most comfortable with. *Hard Drive Space As with any powerful software tool, make sure that you have sufficient empty hard drive space for Windows to operate freely. *Coping Holes From one course to another You must use the import feature to copy holes from one course to another. Directly copying hole files from one folder to another will not be successful. *When Converting a JN4 course Topsoil is changed When converting a Jack 4 course, Topsoil is converted to Rough. *When Converting a JN4 course adjust the shapes on the edges We recommend that with any Jack 4 conversion, any shapes pushed out beyond the edges should be removed in favor of the Jack 5 horizon texture feature. *When Converting a jn4 course look for Missing Objects If any objects are found to be missing, Jack 5 will insert a very visible gold tree as a placeholder for you. Therefore after converting your Jack 4 course, we strongly suggest re-examining your objects, as the object tables are not identical. ********************************************************* 3. CORRECTIONS TO THE PRINTED MANUAL This document includes corrections to the printed manual, last minute additions and changes to Jack Nicklaus 5 and an overview of the option to create custom objects for the Course Designer. Corrections Page 8: The default setting for the Hole Overhead is locked. Page 19: ". . . likelihood of shanking the ball off the toe or heel of the club when the club faces is misaligned" should read ". . . likelihood of shanking the ball off the toe or heel of the club when the club face is misaligned." Page 21: The color of an overswing on the MouseMeter is now red. Page 21: The default golf course for a quick start game is Mt. Juliet, not Hualalai. Page 22: Arctic Fantasy is erroneously listed as a golf course. It is a single hole that includes samples of custom objects created with a third-party paint program. Page 22: It is not necessary to convert the Jack Nicklaus 4 courses included with Jack Nicklaus 5. Page 28: The Camera Selector is now called TVCam Selector in the game. Page 29: Tour Rankings are no longer available during a regular round. Page 29: The current choices for viewing a replay are: Current, Golfer, Ball Lie and Preset Camera. Page 34: Corrected Shape Hierarchy: 0 Sandy Rough Light brown 1 Desert Rough Teal 2 Light Rough Medium green 3 Hazard Coral rose 4 Water Blue 5 Fairway Green 6 Fringe Army green 7 Tee Lime green 8 Green Yellow green 9 Dirt Rust 10 Bunker Sand 11 Rough Gray brown 12 Lava Dark burgundy 13 Cart path Gray 14 Out of Bounds White outline 15 Terrain Pink Page 34: Reference to heavy rough should be rough. Page 50: There are 8 (not 7) directional arrows in the Pick Sky and Horizon window. Page 50: #8 should read: Repeat steps 6 and 7 (not steps 5 and 6). Page 52: You cannot cut a hole to the clipboard, only a shape. Page 55: The heights for Rendered View are Close, Normal, Tower and Aerial. Page 56: You can only view one pin placement at a time. Additions Course Designer Smooth: Hold down the key while tapping the Smooth button to implement Power Smooth (the equivalent of 5 taps of the Smooth button). Game Changing Shot Trajectory: Disregard the section under Changing Shot Type, that refers to Preset Shots: Punch, Bump and Run, Pitch and Flop. The only shots available in Jack Nicklaus 5 are Full, Chip and Putt. However, you can still customize your swing for any situation by altering the trajectory of a Full or Chip shot. Along with the ability to make incremental adjustments to the shot trajectory by pressing and tapping the up/down arrow keys on your keyboard, you can also make immediate adjustments without using the aiming arrow. Click Options on the main menu, and then click Trajectory to open the following command list: Trajectory High: This is the default setting for most shots. Use a high trajectory to achieve maximum height and distance. Medium: A medium trajectory produces slightly less distance in the air, but greater roll after impact. This is a good choice when hitting into the wind. Low: A low trajectory is good for punching the ball under and through a cluster of trees. Direction (this applies for right handed golfers; reverse the direction for left handed golfers.) Hook: Extreme right to left flight path. Draw: Moderate right to left flight path. Straight: Straight ball. Fade: Moderate left to right flight path. Slice: Extreme left to right flight path. Creating Custom Objects For The Course Designer Because of a change in the internal file pathways, you can now create custom objects, sounds, textures, skies and horizons for use in the Jack Nicklaus 5 Golf Course Designer. However, it is important to understand that the creation of custom objects is an external process, rather than an internally supported function of the Course Designer. Custom object creation requires a paint program such as Paint Shop Pro or PhotoShop, and advanced experience with the creation and manipulation of graphic files. Additionally, you must follow a strict format for naming and saving the object files, and editing the course .ini file. If you have mastered course design with the artwork provided in Jack Nicklaus 5, read the description below in item #7, Adding Custom Data to Jack Nicklaus 5 for more details. You can also read the WordPad document "custom.doc" on the root level of your Jack Nicklaus 5 CD ROM. ********************************************************* 4. Restore Jack 5 to continue installation. ********************************************************* 7. Adding Custom Data to Jack Nicklaus 5 Courses NOTE: SEE "Custom.doc" ON THE ROOT LEVEL OF YOUR CD ROM FOR A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THIS PROCESS. The ability to add your own custom artwork to Jack Nicklaus 5 courses was created for experienced computer users/course designers who are already familiar with concepts such as palette creation/control, graphic file formats, anti-aliasing, bitmap scaling, mip-mapping, tiling bitmaps, ASCII and .INI files, etc. The Course Designer comes complete with a wide variety of built-in objects, textures, skies, horizons, and sounds, and less experienced users should create courses using the provided items. Even if you are a graphics savvy pro course designer, you would always want to choose a "stock" item over a custom one, unless you absolutely require custom data to achieve your results. Needlessly adding custom objects will require the users of your course to have more memory, more extra files on their hard drive, and be more prone to error. Accolade does not provide end-user support for Custom Data, but if you would like to add your own trees, skies, sounds, etc. please read use the file "Custom.doc" located on the root level of the Jack Nicklaus 5 CD ROM. Additionally, see the Jack Nicklaus area on www.accolade.com or www.jack4.golfweb.com for links to sites that discuss designing courses with Jack Nicklaus 5 Course Designer. ********************************************************* 8.
