Starting a Game ============================================= INTRODUCTION: Street Luge Racing is a dangerous sport. Only the brave or insane even attempt it. One of the toughest parts of the sport is trying to find a good street to practice on. The luges can easily get above the speed limit on public roads. This will usually catch the attention of the police, who will do their best to stop your dangerous activities. Another problem with practicing is the fact that there is always a chance another car will be on the road, usually going slower than you. These plus many other dangers make practicing Street Luge almost impossible, but impossible is not in a luger's vocabulary. PRACTICE MODE: In Practice Mode, the first three tracks are unlocked so you can practice your skills before attempting a season race and trying to unlock the others. You can only practice on any track available in the game, *after* you have qualified on that track at least once in season mode. Before you qualify on the track it will be "Locked" and you can't even preview it. You may practice with up to 5 opponents, any time of day and with varying amounts of traffic. Even though you can choose to race with any leathers and your luge looks like the best you can buy in season mode you will always be racing with "Starting Equipment", as if you have not bought any upgrades in Season Mode. SEASON MODE: You can race in a 4-man or 6-man season. A season brings you all over the country to compete in Street Luge events against some of the best Luge racers in the world. You win money from your sponsors for placing in a race, and this also gives you season points. Four points for a 1st place, three points for a 2nd place, two points for a 3rd place and one point for a 4th place finish. 5th and 6th places get no points. The person who has the most accumulated points at the end of the season wins the entire season. The player must finish in the top half of the draw on each track to advance to the next race, so if you are playing a 4-man season you must finish 1st or 2nd to continue on to the next race. This also has the effect of unlocking that track in Practice Mode. For a 6-man luge you must finish in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place to continue to the next race and unlock that track in Practice Mode. When you qualify in a race, you will usually win money from your sponsors. This money will pay for your hospital bill (if you crash in a race, usually you will need to go to the hospital). You may also use this money to buy upgrades to your equipment and luge. The upgrades and what they affect are listed below: Helmet - Reduces injury and hospital bills. Leathers - Changes the look of your racer and also reduces injury and hospital bills. Shoes - Newer shoes give you better braking ability, and will reduce slide when you put your feet down around corners. Wheels - Wheels wear out over a few races, you will need to buy new ones every 2 races or so. Wheels also increase acceleration and handling (less slide on corners). Bearings - Better bearings increase top speed and acceleration. Luge Frame - The luge frame helps with handling and traction mostly, making cornering easier. BASIC CONTROLS: You control your luger with the keyboard or joystick. Controls are fully configurable with LugeConfig, just go to the Input tab and click on the key or button corresponding to the action you wish to change. The keyboard keys follow: Lean left/right - left/right arrow Tuck body for more speed - up arrow Hard brake - down arrow Left foot down - Z Right foot down - X Push Off - spacebar The default joystick button layout follows: Lean left/right - left/right on the game pad Tuck body for more speed- button 1 Hard brake - button 2 Push Off- button 3 Left foot down - button 7 Right foot down - button 8 Some additional keys include: Look-behind - While pressing this key, you can easily see who or what is behind you. It defaults to the Left Shift key or Button 5 on the joystick. Camera Views - There are nine different camera views in the game. They can be set with the F1 through F9 keys. F2 camera is default. F9 is the opponent view; you can attach the camera to any opponent and watch the race from his perspective. If you tap F9 more than once it will cycle through all the opponents in the race. Press any other camera key (F1 through F8) to go back to the player view. Viewport Resize - This will make the screen larger or smaller. Making the screen smaller will increase game performance. You can adjust the Viewport Resize by using the + and – keys on your keyboard. ============================================= 5. Game Options & Hints ============================================= LUGECONFIG This is the configuration utility for the game from which you can set your video, sound and input options quickly and easily. Each area is described below: VIDEO If you have a 3D accelerator this is where you can choose what resolution to run the game in. If you have more than one 3D accelerator card, they will each show up in the "Rendering Device" dropdown box. When you first run LugeConfig it will try to pick the best video card it finds, so it is usually safe to leave this box as it is. If you wish to use a video card other than the one LugeConfig picks, simply change the selection in the box. Just below the Rendering Device box is the Resolution box. This is where you can pick which resolution the game runs in. When you have a 3D accelerator card the default resolution is 640x480, and this should work well on most computer systems. If you have a slower computer, lowering this to 512x384 should provide a speed boost. If you have a fast machine (or newer 3D accelerator), you can try increasing the resolution the game will run in. If after raising the resolution the game feels sluggish you should put it back to 640x480. There is an "Advanced" button on this page. These are options only advanced users should play with; it is always safe to leave them at the defaults. They are described below: Windowed - This will run the game in a window on your desktop. The game runs faster in a window so this option is recommended for users with older systems. Environmental Bump Mapping- This option is an advanced feature found on high-end 3D cards. It enhances the look of the game by making surfaces like the road look more defined and life-like. If you are having problems running the game you can try turning this option off to see if it helps, although this option is defaulted to ‘Off’ on all cards that cannot support it. The only video card that supports Environmental Bump Mapping at the time this product was developed (12/99) is the Matrox G400, but additional video cards may support this feature in the future. SOUND If you are having problems with the sound in the game you may disable sound from this page. Turning off sound also makes the game run faster, so if you have an extremely slow system and don't mind having any sound it is suggested you clear that check box. You can also turn off the CD music from this page. INPUT This page allows you to select which controller to use while playing Jugular Street Luge Racing. When you first run LugeConfig it will pick what it thinks is the best controller to play the game with. You can choose any controller attached to your system with the "Controller" dropdown box. You may also choose to disable all controllers by picking "No Controller". This page also allows you to configure the game's controls. On the left side you will see a box for Keyboard Controls and on the right Joystick Controls. In each box is a list of actions on the left, and on the right a button with the current key in it. If you press the button, a small window will pop up asking you to press the key or joystick button you wish to use for that action. Simply press the key (if reconfiguring Keyboard Controls) or the joystick button (if reconfiguring Joystick Controls) you want to assign this function to and it will be assigned. HINTS Luging is not only very rough on your body, but it can also be extremely hard on your equipment. This is especially true when it comes to your wheels. You will shred them at a very rapid pace on some of the more hazardous courses. It’s always a good idea to upgrade your wheels as soon as you have the money to do so. Remember: the better the wheels, the less you will shred them. Until you become very familiar with the game, you should stick to “Normal” and “Hard” AI difficulty settings. The “Insane” AI difficulty setting is just that…Insane! ============================================= 6. Video Card and System Troubleshooting ============================================= Known issues: “When I launch the game in D3D, there is no text in any of the menu screens.”- Make sure you have a video card that is DirectX 7 compatible. Video cards that do not have drivers that are compatible with DirectX 7 will often show no text in the menu screens. You will have to play the game in Software Mode (lugeSoft). "When I check the 'Disable Sound' option in LugeConfig the opening movie doesn't play." - This is correct behavior, the opening movie requires sound to play correctly (and who would want to watch it without The Offspring accompanying it anyway?). When I do a race with Rain as the weather condition, my screen becomes all white and all I can see are shadows. ” From within the game, go to the Options menu and turn Special Effects down to Low. This “bleached” look can occur on the Elsa Erazor III video card and is related to how the game displays fog effects. Changing Special Effects to Low will disable fog and should eliminate the problem. "I select a resolution and it gives me an error about out of memory or no zbuffer hardware." - Some 3D cards will report video modes they actually can't run the game in, if you get this error just choose a video mode one resolution lower, or always use 640x480 (all 3D cards can run the game in that video mode). "Sounds play at varying pitch or volume" - If this happens to you go to the options screen and turn off "Doppler Effects", this should help alleviate the problem. "I have an AMD Athlon processor and the game quits out a few minutes after starting a race." - This is a rare problem on some Athlon processors running in Direct3D mode, if this happens to you, you must run the game in software mode. “When I launch the game, there is no text in any of the menu screens.”- Make sure you have a video card that is DirectX 7 compatible. Video cards that do not have drivers that are compatible with DirectX 7 will often show no text in the menu screens. "Software mode doesn't show rain, car headlights or a backdrop." - Software Mode (lugeSoft) doesn't have all the same features as Direct3D mode (lugeD3D), this is by design to help keep software mode fast and responsive. "The game crashes at startup, saying it is missing a DLL" - You must have DirectX7 to run the game. You can download it from Microsoft's web site at: http://download.microsoft.com/download/win98SE/Update/7.0/W9X/EN-US/DX70eng.exe "The game runs too slowly" - Go into the options screen off the main menu and turn track, character, opponent or special effects details to lower levels. Also making the Viewport smaller (+ and – keys) while in the game should improve game play. The most effective change you can make is setting opponent detail lower, high detail opponents are only suggested for very high-end machines. "The game looks messed up" - make sure you have the very latest DirectX compatible version of your video card drivers, this is extremely important. The game will not work or will look wrong if you are running it on old video drivers. To get the latest drivers, go to the web page of your video board manufacturer. Sound Card Troubleshooting ============================================= Problem: No sound when running on Windows 98. Solution: Make sure your speakers are plugged in, turned on and the volume control is turned up. To check the settings for your sound card, from your desktop, click [Start], [Settings], [Control Panel]. Then select [Multimedia] and in the [Playback] section, choose [Advanced Properties]. Select the 'Performance' tab and make sure that Hardware Acceleration is set to Full and Sample rate conversion Quality is set to Good. If these settings do not improve the quality, try changing them until you get the sound quality you want. If that does not work, press the Restore Defaults button to go back to the original settings. ============================================= 8.
