Welcome to MARATHON 2: DURANDAL Installation Instructions To install Marathon 2, insert the CD into the drive. When your machine recognizes the Marathon 2 CD-ROM (this may require clicking on the My Computer icon), Autoplay will launch the setup application. Click on the "Install Marathon 2" button to enter the setup program. You will have two install options, full or partial. Full install uses more hard drive space, but the game will run faster. Partial only puts the application on the hard drive, and every time you play you must have the CD in the drive. Joysticks and Mice Joystick support was added after the manual was printed, and mouse support has been enhanced. The mouse can now be fully configured, so you're no longer stuck with turning, looking and shooting. The joystick can also be fully configured, and you really haven't played Marathon until you try to play it with rudder pedals.... To select what type of controls to use, go to "Preferences", then select "Controls" from the drop down list. There are three radio buttons: 1) Mouse and Keyboard 2) Keyboard 3) Joystick and Keyboard. --- Mouse and Keyboard --- If you select option you will be using the Mouse and Keyboard to control the player. The standard mouse controls: turning left/right, looking up/down, and firing primary and secondary weapons, as well as the action flag (depending on the number of mouse buttons you have). To change the mouse configuration, click on the "Configure Mouse..." button. To change your keys, click on the "Configure Keyboard..." button. Note that the mouse control can be made less responsive by selecting the Mouse Control Panel from the Desktop, then selecting the Motion tab and sliding the Cursor Speed slider to the left. (Conversely, to make the mouse control more responsive, move the slider to the right) --- Keyboard --- Nothing has changed for this configuration since the manual was printed. --- Joystick and Keyboard --- If you select this option, the "Configure Joystick..." button will appear. (If this radio button is grayed out, it means that Windows cannot detect your joystick or you don't have one connected. You should quit Marathon and go to the Control Panels, and then click on the Joystick icon. Follow the on screen directions to configure your joystick). The "Configure Joystick..." button will allow you to specify what you want each of the joystick axis to control. If you don't know which axis is which, all is not lost- simply wiggle the joystick along the axis you wish to control, and Marathon will automagically highlight the popup next to the axis that you moved the most. Once you have configured the axis controls of the joystick, you can go to the "Configure Keyboard..." button to select what the buttons on your joystick do. Note that some joysticks return combinations of buttons, which may confuse Marathon. If you click on a button and it says it has the same Button ID as a different button, you won't be able to use the two buttons together. You might want to contact your joystick vendor- a new driver may fix the problem. Troubleshooting Q: Why doesn't it let me choose Keyboard and Joystick? (It's greyed out) A: This is because Windows can't detect your joystick, and therefore neither can Marathon. You need to go to the Joystick Control Panel, and tell the system what kind of joystick you have. Once done, relaunch Marathon and you should be able to use your joystick to kill, maim, and destroy... Q: Why do I keep turning in circles (running forward, sidestepping, etc.) with the joystick? I am not even touching it!!! A: You need to calibrate the joystick, in the Windows joystick control panel. Once calibrated, your joystick should work fine. Q: When I am using the joystick or mouse, and I look left or right while turning, it doesn't recenter my view. What should I do? A: When you stop turning, it will recenter your view. Q: Does Marathon support my joystick with a POV hat? A: Yup. It's hardwired to look left/right. Q: Hey, the keys on the numeric keypad stopped working! What happened? A: Most likely you hit Num Lock. Push it again and it should return to normal. Q: My keyboard is doing odd things! I am not touching it, and I am still moving/firing, etc! A: Push the SHIFT key to reset the keyboard... Q: During gameplay, the framerate drops to 1 or 2 frames per second periodically. What can I do about this? A: We have noticed the same thing ever since we got our NT server. This problem can be solved by going to the Network Control Panel, selecting "File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks", clicking on "Properties", and setting the Value for the Property "Browse Master" to "Disabled". There may be a better way to fix this, but we don't know about it at this time- keep an eye on the web page for anything further that we discover...
