DOS: 1) Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. 2) Go to your CD-ROM prompt in DOS by typing the letter of your CD-ROM drive followed by a colon (:), then hit the key. 3) Type INSTALL and hit the key. 4) Follow through the prompts to install NASCAR 2 Example: If your CD-ROM drive is your D: drive you would go to DOS and type the following... D: INSTALL ----------------------------------------------------------------------- III. GAMEPLAY ISSUES MOUSE DRIVER REQUIRED You must have a mouse driver installed to run NASCAR Racing 2. If you are running in a DOS Box from within Windows 95, the driver will be automatically loaded. If you "Restart the Computer in MS-DOS Mode" before playing the game, you may have to load one manually. Usually, you can simply type the word "mouse" at a C:\> prompt; however, specific systems vary. If you are unable to load your mouse, please contact your computer manufacturer. CD-ROM REQUIRED TO BE IN THE DRIVE TO HOST MULTIPLAYER The CD-ROM disc must be in the CD-ROM drive to host a multiplayer race. If it is not, an error message will appear when you Connect to answer. FREE MEMORY REQUIREMENTS The game requires that you have 10 MB free RAM when you start the program. If you get a memory error message, please free more RAM. This can be done by restarting the computer in MS-DOS mode (if you had been running from a DOS Box in Windows 95), booting your system with a clean boot disk that does not start memory resident software (TSRs), and not using memory managers such as EMM386. PROBLEMS WITH UniVBE Not all video cards are compatible with UniVBE. If the machine locks up or acts strangely after running uvconfig, reboot the machine and delete the univbe.drv and uvconfig.dat files in the NASCAR2 directory on your hard drive. USING THE RENDITION VERSION OF THE GAME To start the Rendition version of the game from DOS, type N2REND from your NASCAR Racing 2 directory. To start the Rendition version of the game from Windows 95, click on the NASCAR Racing 2 for Rendition Verite icon in your Sierra folder. You may be able to use a version that is optimized to use the DMA capabilities of your computer. Please see below for detail of which computers will be able to use this version. To start the Rendition version with DMA support in DOS, type RENDDMA from your NASCAR Racing 2 directory. From Windows 95, select the Run command on your start menu and type C:\SIERRA\NASCAR2\RENDDMA.BAT and click OK. Can you use the dma optimization? It runs at normal efficiency by default, using the N2REND.BAT file or the icon in the Sierra Folder in Windows 95. Some Pentium systems, (generally only the most recent), have updated chipsets that use the newest version of DMA. NASCAR Racing 2 for Rendition, when optimized to run on Pentium machines with updated DMA, can see a fairly significant increase in performance over the normal version of the product. We felt that there was a significant number of new Pentium machines to justify the addition of a switch to access this feature. NASCAR Racing 2 for Rendition has been proven to run on Pentium and Cyrix machines without a problem using the N2REND.BAT file, or the icon in the Sierra Folder in Windows 95. It will not execute on AMD's and 486's. When NASCAR Racing 2 for Rendition is launched using enhanced dma (RENDDMA.BAT), newer Pentium machines with updated DMA will pass the compatibility test and the game should function normally. Normal Pentiums and Cyrix's will fail the initial compatibility test, causing the program to halt. Machines running DMA enhanced version may experience a higher level of performance than when they run the default version. If you launch using DMA and experience any type or crash or lockup, your system is most likely not compatible with the DMA enhanced version of NASCAR Racing 2 for Rendtion, and you should go back to running the normal version (N2REND.BAT). ADDITIONAL RENDITION INFORMATION If you only have 16MB of memory, we will automatically load in 4bit textures at the tracks. This will cause some objects to look different from the normal version. If you have 24MB or more, then we will load in the normal 8bit textures at the tracks. If you are running the Rendition version of NASCAR Racing 2 on a non-Intel Pentium machine, then you may notice some jerkiness with the joystick. PROBLEMS WITH THE MATROX MILLENIUM VIDEO CARD If you have a Matrox Millenium video card with a BIOS version previous to 2.0, you may experience pausing while playing the game. Contact Matrox to receive the latest version of the BIOS. CONFIGURING NETWORK PLAY Most small networks consist of a single subnetwork; if you want to run NASCAR Racing 2 on such a network, you won't need to do any special configuration for the game to work. However, larger networks are often partitioned into subnetworks. If you would like to play NASCAR Racing 2 on such a network, you should create a network configuration file that tells the game which partition on your network to find the game server. The network configuration file is a simple text file named "subnet.cfg" which contains a one-line entry for each subnet on your network. You can determine these text entries by going into NASCAR Racing 2 and selecting "Multiplayer - network - dial - connect." Copy the label listed as "Your Subnet Address: xxxxxxxx". This is an eight digit hexadecimal number which may include the numbers 0-9 as well as the letters a-f. Then, with a text editor, create the file "subnet.cfg" and add a line of text matching this eight digit string. Add a line to the "subnet.cfg" file for each player you would like to be able to race with. If there are duplicate entries, only add one copy of each. NASCAR Racing 2 will support up to 10 different subnets. If you are running on a network with more than ten subnetworks, please create a separate copy of file "subnet.cfg" for each group of people you would like to be able to race with. LOADING YOUR PICTURE INTO DRIVER INFO In the driver info screen there is a button labeled "PCX". This button will allow you to load a picture of yourself, or whatever you want, into the driver info screen. To do so, follow the instructions below. There is a file in the CARS directory called "blank.pcx". This file has a particular palette and region of the screen for the picture. You will have to use a commercial paint program with palette remapping capabilities, (Deluxe Paint or Adobe Photoshop will work) to get the picture you want in the game. Load the picture you wish to use into the paint program. Then, load in "blank.pcx" file. Remap your picture to the palette of "blank.pcx". (Consult the paint program documentation for instructions on how to remap pictures.) You must make sure that your picture is only as large as "blank.pcx" (241 wide by 402 high). If the picture is larger, the game screen will turn black when you load the .pcx into Driver Info. It would be preferable to cut out the picture you want to use and place it on the blue background in "blank.pcx" to give the image a consistent look in the game. Then, save the file using the name of the car file you want to match the picture with (e.g. t_player.pcx for using the photo with t_player.car). Place that new file in the CARS directory. Start NASCAR Racing 2 and go to the entry list screen under Driver Info. Select the driver you wish to change/add the photo to and click on Info. Once at the driver info screen, press the "PCX" button at the bottom of the screen. If you have done the above steps correctly, the picture should appear in the correct area of the screen. If the picture comes in, but with all the colors messed up, it wasn't remapped correctly. If the screen goes black when you press "PCX", then the picture size was too large. MAX NUMBER OF CAR FILES You can only have a maximum of 128 cars in the CARS directory. Anything more than 128 won't be visible in the All Drivers list. TOWING RULES Once you call for a tow, it will take a little time for the towing to actually start. The spotter will let you know the tow truck is coming. This was done to simulate the time it might take to actually recover a car from an incident. If you move the car at all, then the tow truck is waved off. You'll have to hit Alt-i again if you want a tow. TURNING OFF SPOTTER SPEECH If you turn off the spotter speech, make sure you turn on the spotter text. It will give you much needed info about yellow flag and pace lap procdures. These settings may be made in the Options menu. Also, starting the game with a -st (nascar2 -st) will load the game without the spotter speech and force to text display. This will also cause the program to use less memory, which will be used for the replay. VIEWING A REPLAY In order to view the replay you must load the same entry list and be at the same track at which the replay was recorded. FIELD SIZE (NUMBER OF OPPONENTS) At some tracks the size of the field is a lot smaller at real races. This is due to the pit areas at the tracks in the game being larger than they are in real life. This limits the number of cars we can have. The number of cars per track is determined by the distance needed between your car and the car in front of you. We determined the amount of space needed for you to get out of your pit stall without hitting the car in front of you or having to reverse to get out. With the introduction of the wheelspin feature, it is possible to increase the field sizes and use the wheelspin to exit the pits. This is not the default because it takes a while for people to feel comfortable using this feature. Below is a list showing the real field size at the various tracks, the default NASCAR Racing 2 field size and the appropriate field size if using the wheelspin feature. If you wish to change the size of the field at a track, use a text editor and edit the track.txt file located in that track directory. Change both numbers in the CARS line to the number you wish. Example: To change Atlanta from 36 drivers to 39, edit Atlanta.txt. change CARS 36 36 to CARS 39 39 You must change the number of pit stalls allowed at the track. This is done by changing the 8th number on the PIT line in the track.txt file. This number MUST BE THE SAME NUMBER AS THE CARS NUMBER. If it is not, bad evil things will happen. Example: Also change the number of pit stalls by changing the 36 to a 39. PIT 90077 43657519 5454190 44170392 3885105 315803 20550039 36 44224390 ... || 39 If the track has two pit lanes, make sure that the 8th number on the PIT line and the 8th number on the PIT2 line add up to the number on the CARS line. So, at Bristol with 36 cars, the 8th number on the PIT line would be 18, and the 8th number on the PIT2 line would be 18. In the case of an odd number of cars, the "extra" car should be included on the front pits, so the 8th number on PIT will be higher than on PIT2. NOTE: You are limited to a max of 39 drivers (including yourself) in a race. FIELD SIZES BY TRACK The first number is the real life field size. The second number is the default NASCAR Racing 2 size. The third number is the max field size you can use in the game if you are comfortable using the wheelspin feature to exit your pit stall. Atlanta 42 35 39 Bristol 36 31 36 Charlotte 42 31 39 Darlington 42 39 39 Dover 42 28 39 Loudon 41 33 39 Martinsville 36 25 36 Michigan 42 39 39 N.Wilkesboro 36 36 36 Phoenix 44 30 39 Pocono 42 39 39 Richmond 38 25 38 Rockingham 40 39 39 Sears Point 43 21 39 Talladega 42 36 39 Watkins Glen 40 27 39 QUICK QUALIFYING There is a Quick Qualify checkbox on the qualifying screen. Checking this will instantly fill in the qualify times for all the computer opponents. When it reaches your position in the list, Qualify will appear on the menu at the bottom. Click that to begin your qualifying run. Once you come back from qualifying, the remaining qualify times will be automatically filled in. CHANGING DRIVER NAME When you select "New Driver" on the entry list screen you create a new .CAR file. Click "Info" to get to the info screen for the new driver. Select the "Name" field in the lower left and enter a name. This will allow you to change the large driver name displayed at the top of the screen. FUEL LIMIT Unless you select "Testing" as the Weekend Type on the Quick Race screen, you will be unable to change the amount of fuel in the car. It will always be at 22 gallons. In real NASCAR racing, the fuel is part of the total car weight calculation and is a mandated 22 gallons. If you select "Testing", you will be able to change the fuel level so you can test the car setup under different fuel loads. PRINTING WITH A NETWORK PRINTER FROM WINDOWS 95 In order to be able to use the "Print" feature in the Standings screen with a network printer, your PC must be connected to a printer via a network, and the printer must be properly installed. If you run NASCAR 2 from within Windows 95 in a DOS box, and you wish to print from within the game, you must be sure to have checked the "Yes" box under "Do you print from MS-DOS-based programs?" in the Add Printer Wizard when you set up your printer. GREEN FLAG AT NORTH WILKESBORO The green flag at North Wilkesboro comes out a little early, usually while on the backstraight. This was the only way we could solve another nasty problem. Basically, when the green flag comes out in the normal place, the AI cars would get all bunched up in turn one, slowing down drastically. This can cause huge problems. We felt this was a better trade-off.
