Once installed, you can access the game from the start menu. Or, 1. Open Windows Explorer 2. Double click the icon representing your CD Drive 3. In the right pane of Windows Explorer, double click Setup.exe During the installation, you will be asked whether or not to install DirectX 6.0. DirectX 6.0 is required for this title. NOTE: Microsoft updates its DirectX drivers regularly. To determine whether there is a newer version of DirectX available than has shipped with this product, go to the following website: www.microsoft.com/directx Follow the instructions to download the End User version from there, if it is a more recent one than is supplied on the CD-ROM. III. GENERAL GAME ISSUES: ----------------------------------------- PLAYING 1. Go to the Start Menu 2. Select Programs 3. Select SouthPeak Interactive 4. Select Pinky and the Brain (see Different Game Modes, below) HI RES AND LOW RES Pinky and the Brain (TM) World Conquest (TM) supports several modes of play, which enable you to enjoy the game with or without 3D acceleration. In most cases, you will want to use the High resolution option; only if your system cannot run the game in High res should you choose the Low resolution option from within the game. The game will default either to 3D hardware-accelerated High resolution, or 640x480x256 colors 8-bit Software mode. The latter is distinguishable from the hardware-accelerated mode mainly by the absence of shading on the Pinky and The Brain characters in the mazes. Certain 3D acceleration cards do not have enough video memory for Pinky and the Brain (TM) World Conquest (TM), so during the game you may get a message that says, "Video memory exceeded. Please try the game in software mode." If this happens, try "P&B Software Mode" from the Start menu. THE FREEZE POWER-UP: The Freeze power-up is not described in the manual, but is featured prominently in the game. It's a Curse power-up, so when you grab it, other players are at your mercy. In this case, they will freeze for a few seconds while you Take Over the World! CURSE CAMERA IN SINGLE-COMPUTER, MULTI-PLAYER MODE: Note that the Curse Camera will not work when the game is played in this mode; it would not be appropriate for it to do so. COMMAND BUTTONS: If you want to configure your options while playing a maze, or anytime you want without going into the Options part of the menus, use these buttons: F2 SFX decrease volume F3 SFX increase volume F4 Music decrease F5 Music increase F6 Voices decrease F7 Voices increase F8 make game darker F9 make game brighter F12 save an image of the game (images stored in game root) IV. GENERAL WALK THROUGH ---------------------------------------- Pinky and the Brain (TM) World Conquest (TM)can be played alone against the computer, in multi-player mode over a Local Area Network or via the Internet, between two computers hooked together with modems or a null-modem cable, or with multiple gamepads daisy-chained together on a single computer. The menus allow you to choose between these options. NOTE: If you plan to use multiple gamepads daisy-chained together on one computer for a multi-player game, BE SURE to shut down your computer before hooking up the game pads. Start the computer after connecting the gamepads and then start the program. If you are using USB, and have a USB hub, you will not need to take this precaution; however, you should only start the game AFTER you have hooked up all the gamepads. If you change the number of gamepads connected to a USB hub with the computer on, be sure to exit and re-start the game before attempting multi-player. SINGLE PLAYER MODE: TAKE OVER THE WORLD When you play a single player game, you have the choice of playing a Take Over the World game or a Tournament. In a Take Over the World game, you are given a Global Domination Agenda, which is a series of more than fifty mazes. You must play the Global Domination Agenda mazes in order; they will be progressively more challenging the higher you go. Every now and then when you win a maze, you'll see a segment of the Pinky and the Brain cartoon. If for some reason you cannot win a maze, don't give up, because after a few tries you will be given the option of moving on to the next maze. SINGLE PLAYER MODE: TOURNAMENTS In tournament mode you select one or more mazes to play. You choose mazes on the Maze Options Screen. Use your mouse to position the arrow next to the maze you want to select, and click the Add arrow to add it to your Tournament. If you want to remove the maze from your tournament, position the arrow next to the maze in the lower window and click the Remove arrow. When you double click on a Maze name, you go to the Maze Configurations box. This box allows you to configure your maze by choosing available camera modes and maze time limit. MULTIPLAYER MODE: TOURNAMENTS All multi-player games are Tournaments. When you choose multi-player in the menus, the first screen you'll see is the Choose a Connection screen. This is where you choose your mode of connection. There are six modes of connection in the game. 1. IPX - Select this if you are hooked up to a Local Area Network. How to do it: - Select IPX from the Choose a Connection Screen and hit the Go! button in the menu. - Enter your name. - On the Host/Join screen, you can Join a game by positioning the arrow next to an active game and hitting the Join button. You can host a name by hitting the Host button, typing in a name for your game, and hitting Go! - Whether or not you've hosted or joined, you'll now Choose a Character. Hit Go! after choosing a character. - On the Maze Options screen, only the Host can pick games. Other players can sit back and watch the Host pick the tournament. This would be a good time to use the Chat feature to talk to other players. When the Host clicks Go!, the area surrounding the box with his name turns green. Don't hold up the show; click Go! and start the game! 2. TCP/IP - Select this if you are hooked up to a Local Area Network that does not support IPX, or if you want to play over the Internet by entering a friend's IP address or machine name. How to do it: - Select TCP/IP from the Choose a Connection Screen and hit the Go! button. - Follow the same steps as listed under IPX. The only difference is that in TCP/IP, after you enter your name and hit Go!, you will be given the choice of entering an IP address. If you know your friend's IP, enter it. If you don't, and you want to browse a Local Area Network for available games, either cancel out of the IP window, or leave it blank and hit OK. NOTE: You can find your IP address once you've started your Internet browser by following these steps: 1. Click Start--> Run 2. In the white "Open" dialog box, type "winipcfg" (without quotes) 3. You will now see an IP Address information screen; the numbers listed next to the IP Address line is your computer's current IP Address on the Internet. Depending on your Internet Provider, your IP Address may change each time you log on to the Internet with your browser. Make sure to run winipcfg this way each time you do so, to have the right IP Address to give to your friends looking for you. 3. Modem - Select this if you have a modem, and want to connect to a friend's machine. - Select Modem from the Choose a Connection Screen and hit the Go! button. You will get a Windows selection box where, along with other information, you'll enter your Baud Rate. You must select at least 28.8 Kbps in order to run this game. Your other settings, including your COM Port, should already be at their default settings, so just click OK. - Follow the same steps as listed under IPX. 4. Serial - Select this if you have a serial cable connecting two computers. - Select Serial from the Choose a Connection Screen. - Follow the same steps as listed under IPX 5. Microsoft Internet Gaming Zone - Select this if you want to activate your browser and play against opponents on the MSN Gaming Zone! - Select MSN Gaming Zone - Your browser will start, and you will access the Gaming Zone. 6. Gamepad - If you have two or more gamepads hooked up to your machine, and they are the same type of gamepad (make and model), you will be able to use this option to play with two or more players on the same computer. - Select Gamepad from the Choose a Connection Screen. - Follow the same steps as listed under IPX. V. TROUBLESHOOTING: ----------------------------------------- Q: The game runs too slow to play. A: Try playing the game in one of its Software modes (see Game Modes, in General Game Issues). ----------------------------------------- Q: My cursor keeps moving by itself on the screen. How do I stop it? A: This is due to your joystick; if it is an analog joystick, go to Control Panel and click on the Game Controllers icon and recalibrate your joystick. If you have a Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle Pro joystick, press the Sensor button on the joystick to switch the LED on the joystick from green to red (this temporarily disables the motion sensor). ----------------------------------------- Q: I tried to switch to Low Resolution, but I was unable to do so. What should I do? A: If you have any 3D card, the low resolution option is disabled in the menu, because 3D hardware does not typically support low resolution. For this case, we've created a special shortcut executable that will allow you to play without hardware acceleration so you can choose either high or low resolution in the menu. In the Start menu for the game, select "P&B Software Mode." ----------------------------------------- Q: Why can't I see sessions under TCP/IP or takes a long time? A: Try typing in the machine name or TCP/IP address of the machine you are trying to connect with. ----------------------------------------- Q: Why don't I hear any sounds? A1: Go to the options menu off of the main menu and make sure the sound levels are adjusted properly. A2: Use the function keys to change it if you are in the game. ----------------------------------------- Q: How do I use the Opponent Configuration screen? A: When you choose the number of Opponents you wish to face on the Opponent Configuration screen (and choose their skill level-Easy, Medium, or Hard), you are also choosing which mazes you want to see. For example, if you decide not to face any opponents, then you will be shown all the mazes in the tournament menu. But if you decide to face three opponents, you will only be shown the Mazes that allow three players. You can change your mind in the Maze Options screen and decide to play with more opponents. ------------------------------------------ Q: How do I use the Maze Options Screen? A: The Maze Options Screen is the arena where you choose both Single and Multi-player tournaments. Use your mouse to position the arrow next to the maze you want to select, and click the Add arrow to add it to your Tournament. If you want to remove the maze from your tournament, position the arrow next to the maze in the lower window and click the Remove arrow. When you double click on a Maze name, you get the Maze Configurations box which allows you to configure your maze any way you want. ------------------------------------------- Q: I can't play multi-player games using the Mazes I've created with the Maze Builder. Why? A: Sorry. User mazes are for Single Player Tournament games only. ------------------------------------------- Q: Why can't I play with two players on the same machine? A: You can! Just hook up two or more controllers to your machine (some joypads are daisy chained, while others are connected via a HUB). This game supports Gravis joypads, Microsoft Sidewinders, and really just about any controller with a directional pad and five buttons. If you want to use more than one controller on the same machine, they must be the SAME type of controller. Once you have two controllers hooked up properly, you will see a selection in the Choose a Connection menu called Gamepads. ------------------------------------------- Q: When I tried to uninstall the game, I received an error message that said, "This application uses Ctl3d32.dll, which is not the correct version." What should I do? A: Some Windows applications which are designed to run under both Windows 95/98 and Windows NT may install the NT version of CTL3D32.DLL. If you encounter this problem when attempting to uninstall Pinky and The Brain, please select 'OK.' ------------------------------------------- Q: When asked if I wanted to install DirectX 6.0 during the install, I said No. Since the game requires DirectX 6.0 to run, I want to go back and install it. What should I do? A: Go to the directory on your CD-ROM, and look for the DIRECTX6\redist\DirectX folder. Double-click on dxsetup.exe. This will allow you to redo the installation process, and install DirectX 6.0. ------------------------------------------- Q: I have 2 CD-ROM drives. I installed the CD and played the game, but I played it later and it would not run. Why? A: Always run the game from the same CD-ROM drive you used to install it. ------------------------------------------- Q: I have a Riva 128 or ATI Rage/Rage II+ or other video card, and the game is giving me a black screen or crashing to Windows. What should I do? A: In certain cases, the ability of the video card to switch between 2D and 3D modes may be impeded either by limitations of the DirectX drivers or limitations of the hardware. Please update your video card drivers to the latest version from your video card manufacturer's website, and then re-install DirectX 6.0 to see if this resolves the problem. You may also try running the game in Software Mode; you will not see this problem if you play the game in Software Mode (see instructions for doing so above). A: Most likely you need to update your controller software. Try going to the Microsoft website: www.microsoft.com/hardware. Download the newest Game Controller software for your Microsoft controller. The current version as of this writing is 3.0. ******************************************************************************************** Copyright (c) 1998, SouthPeak Interactive LLC.
