Welcome to the Premier Series of PokéROMs for ages 6 and up. Insert the PokéROM CD into your CD-ROM drive. 2. On systems with AutoPlay, the PokéROM title screen appears. 3. On systems without AutoPlay, double-click on My Computer. Double-click on the CD-ROM drive. Double-click on "PokéROM.exe" and the program should start automatically. Macintosh 1. Insert the PokéROM CD into your CD-ROM drive. 2. On systems with AutoPlay, the PokéROM title screen appears. 3. If the program does not launch automatically, double-click on "PokéROM" and the program should start. REMOVING THE PROGRAM *************** Windows 1. Click on START--SETTINGS--CONTROL PANEL. 2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs. 3. Scroll in the window and click on "Pokémon Edu Series." 4. Click on the "Add/Remove..." button and follow on-screen prompts. 5. All files will be removed automatically. Macintosh 1. Double-click on your hard drive. 2. Double-click on "The Learning Company" folder. 3. Drag the "Pokémon Edu Series" folder to the Trash. 4. On the desktop, drag the "Sanctuary" shortcut to the Trash. 5. Empty the Trash. BRAIN CHALLENGE ************************************ Complete Professor Oak's Brain Challenge by matching all of his squares. Once you have found all the matches, you will see a picture of the Pokémon you just freed, and you can access the other parts of the PokéROM! To play the Brain Challenge again, click on the "Play Again" button. If you found the challenge too easy or too hard, you can choose a different level from 1 to 5 by using the number keys on your keyboard. Settings ******** Click here to adjust the sound. Turn the music ON or OFF by clicking on the buttons. Adjust the volume by clicking on the left and right arrows. Sanctuary ********* Click to enter the Pokémon Sanctuary. Here you will be able to choose your next adventure. You can either enter the Observation Lab to view wild Pokémon, or challenge yourself in the Trainer Race in the Trainer Center! Viewer ****** Click here to watch a slideshow of exciting scenes featuring your Pokémon. Print ****** Click here to print pictures of your freed Pokémon. Play Again *********** Click here to replay the Brain Challenge. Quit **** Click here to leave the program. SANCTUARY ************************************ After you free the wild Pokémon, you can enter the Sanctuary where you can choose where to go next. Try the Observation Lab, where you can view your wild Pokémon in their natural habitat, or enter the Trainer Center, where you will be able to test your Pokémon skills by taking on the Pokémon Challenge! Professor Oak ************* Hear Professor Oak's instructions again at any time by clicking on his picture on the upper right-hand side of the screen. Choosing an Activity ******************** Click on the icon for The Observation Lab or click on The Trainer Center. OBSERVATION LAB ************************************ Here you can view the wild Pokémon that you freed during the Brain Challenge! Click on the arrows to move to different parts of the landscape. Drag your cursor over the observation window to find target squares that will highlight. Click on the blinking target within these highlighted squares to see an image of your Pokémon in its own environment. Professor Oak ************* Hear Professor Oak's instructions again at any time by clicking on his picture on the upper right-hand side of the screen. Pikachu Button ************** Click here to see a list of the Pokémon that you have freed into the Sanctuary. Controls ******** Click on "Controls." You can then choose "Settings" to adjust the volume and music, or "Trainer Center" to go into The Trainer Center. TRAINER CENTER ************************************ Here you will be able to take on the Pokémon challenge! Click on the map area of the Trainer Race to sign in and start on your way to winning the race! How to Play *********** 1. Click on the map area on the desk to start the Pokémon challenge! 2. Choose the number of players, sign in, select your grade/level, and then click on "OK " to start. 3. A series of questions will appear. Click on an answer choice to choose. You can see your Pokémon progress on the map to the right. 4. After each player gets 7 consecutive questions, you will be challenged to a Lightning Round! Here you will be racing yourself or other players to click on the correct answers. Use your letter key in order to do this. Be careful, you will fall back one step if you give an incorrect answer. Professor Oak ************* Hear Professor Oak's instructions again at any time by clicking on his picture on the upper right-hand side of the screen. Controls ******** Click on "Controls." You can then choose "Settings" to adjust the music, or "Trainer Center," to go back into the Trainer Center. From the Trainer Center you can Quit, enter the Trainer Race, or enter the Observation Lab. TROUBLESHOOTING ************************************ If you have trouble with your software, make sure your computer meets the System Requirements and check the troubleshooting information below for advice. If you still need help, contact our Technical Support department. *Note: This program requires that the disc be in the CD-ROM drive at all times when you are using the program. WINDOWS ********* PROBLEM: Your computer is having trouble reading the CD-ROM. Symptoms: There are sudden changes in performance, or error messages such as the following appear: * "Cannot read from drive 'D:'" * "Error reading from CD-ROM" * "A serious CD error has occurred" Possible Cause: The disc may be damaged or dirty. Solution: Check your disc for fingerprints, scratches, or smudges. To check your disc, hold its shiny side up to a bright light. If you find your disc is dirty, you can clean it with a soft cotton cloth. If necessary, you may also use a damp cloth. If your disc becomes damaged, refer to our replacement policy in the warranty section of the user's guide. PROBLEM: You receive random error messages while playing the Brain Challenge or accessing the Sanctuary. Possible Cause A: Your hard drive or the area where you installed to may be full and the program cannot save your progress. Possible Cause B: Your program has become corrupted. Solution A: This program installs 10 MB to your hard drive. Therefore, you cannot save to a floppy disk. Check the space available on your hard drive by double-clicking on My Computer, right-click on your hard drive and go to Properties. A window will appear showing the used space and free space. Make sure that your free space is at least 10 MB. Solution B: Try uninstalling the program and restart your computer. Reinstall the program and play again. PROBLEM: The video or display of one of our activities does not seem right, or you are getting an error message concerning display or video. Possible Cause: Your monitor's color depth setting is not set to 16-bit color, or your screen's resolution is not set to 800x600 pixels. Solution: Adjust your monitor's display settings. Try the following: 1. Click the right mouse button on your Windows' Desktop screen. 2. Select PROPERTIES. 3. Click on the SETTINGS tab. This will show the current color and screen settings. 4. Change your color depth setting to 16-bit color, and/or your screen resolution depth to 800x600. Click OK. PROBLEM: The video or display of your monitor is not set back to your original display settings after exiting the program. Possible Cause: You exited out of the program without using the Quit button. Solution: Adjust your monitor's display settings. Try the following: 1. Click the right mouse button on your Windows' Desktop screen. 2. Select PROPERTIES. 3. Click on the SETTINGS tab. This will show the current color and screen settings. 4. Change your color depth setting to your original settings. Click OK. PROBLEM: There is no sound, or there is distorted sound. Possible cause: Your sound card's settings are improperly set. Solution: First, check the following setting. If that fails to help, you will need to contact your sound card manufacturer. It may help to increase the size of your sound buffer: 1. Go to START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL. 2. Double-click on the MULTIMEDIA icon. 3. Click on the Advanced tab, then double-click on MEDIA CONTROL DEVICES. 4. Double click on WAVE AUDIO DEVICE. 5. Click on the SETTINGS button; turn the dial so that the sound buffer is set to 8. Possible cause: There is no sound card present. Solution: Our programs require a sound card. If you do not currently have one, see your local computer retailer for a compatible sound card. PROBLEM: You encounter error messages while removing the program. Possible cause: A file may be in use. Solution: Restart your machine and try removing/uninstalling the program again. MACINTOSH ********* *Note: This product is not compatible with OS 9.0 Panels. PROBLEM: The video or display of one of our activities does not seem right, or you are getting random error messages concerning display or video. Solution: Adjust your monitor's display settings. Try the following: 1. Click on the Apple menu. 2. Scroll down to Control Panels. Select Monitors & Sound. 3. Click on the Monitor button. This will show the current color and resolution settings. 4. Change your color depth setting to Thousands, and/or your screen resolution depth to 800x600. Close the window. PROBLEM: The sound is choppy or the program's performance is slow. Possible Cause: Applications other than this application are running. Solution: Quit the program and exit all other programs, including screen savers. Then try launching the program again. PROBLEM: You get an error message saying there is not enough memory to run the program. Possible Cause: You do not have enough memory available to run the program. Solution: Make more memory available by disabling certain System Extensions in your System Folder. Please consult your Macintosh documentation for instructions on how to do so. Possible Cause: Applications other than this application are running. Solution: Quit the program and exit all other programs, including screen savers. Then try launching the program again. PROBLEM: You get the error message: "Error Type 11." Possible Cause: You do not have enough memory available to run the program. Solution: Make more memory available by disabling certain System Extensions in your System Folder. Please consult your Macintosh documentation for instructions on how to do so. Possible Cause: In Macintosh operating systems that use Modern Memory Manager, this control panel may not be allocating enough memory to the program to allow it to play. Solution: Quit this program and exit all other programs. Turn Modern Memory Manager off in your Memory control panel. Please consult your Macintosh documentation for instructions on how to do so. PROBLEM: You receive the error message: "The disk could not be put away, because it contains items that are in use." Possible Cause: You have not quit out of the program. Solution: Click on the Mac icon in the upper right corner of your screen. Select PokéROM from the menu that appears. Then click on the File menu in the upper left corner of your screen. Select "Quit" from the menu. You may now drag your PokéROM CD icon to the Trash to eject it. PROBLEM: You cannot print or it takes a long time to print out the images. Possible Cause: Your Virtual Memory is turned off or not set correctly. Solution: Turn ON your Virtual Memory or increase it to at least 50MB by following the steps outlined below. To turn Virtual Memory ON: 1. Click on the Apple icon in the menu bar at the top of the screen. 2. Click on Control Panels. 3. Click on Memory. 4. Within the Virtual Memory settings, click on the ON setting. 5. Exit and restart the computer. To increase your Virtual Memory: 1. Complete steps 1-3 above. 2. Within the Virtual Memory settings, increase your Available built-in memory to 50MB. 3. Exit and restart your computer.
