======================== KLINGON ACADEMY README ======================== For the latest information on Klingon Academy, please visit our website at: http://www.interplay.com/klingon =============== ONLINE MANUAL =============== The complete online manual is located on the CD-ROM in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, you can view the online manual by double clicking on KA Manual.pdf in the root of your CD-ROM. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, you can install it by doing the following: Double click on "My Computer", then double click on the CD-ROM drive, double click on "ar405eng.exe" and follow the onscreen instructions. After you install the game, a shortcut to the online manual will be created in the Start menu under Programs > 14 Degrees East > Klingon Academy > Klingon Academy Manual. ============== KNOWN ISSUES ============== To better ensure a quality experience when playing Klingon Academy, please ensure that all of your hardware's drivers are the latest RELEASE or RETAIL versions. Use of BETA drivers may create problems. And, as always, ensure that all your drivers are release versions and that you have read the HARDWARE ISSUES section below before reporting a problem. ----------------- HARDWARE ISSUES ----------------- The Diamond Speedstar A70 card (SiS 6326 AGP chipset) on the system tested left the Windows mouse cursor and hourglass in the middle of the screen when the game was played in 640x480 resolution. The Diamond Stealth II G460 card (Intel i740 chipset) on the system tested had problems with polys dropping out of the ship models during combat. On the Matrox G400, there is a minor graphics problem where the mouse cursor appears as a black box during certain in-game dialog sequences. Also, there may be some white dots that appear on the screen in the 3D game window. There is a workaround. Install Tweakutil and uncheck "Use Hardware to Draw Color Mouse Pointer". Voodoo chipset cards occasionally get polygon flicker in the high detail starfield. The Creative Graphics Blaster Extreme card (Permedia 2 chipset) on the system tested had severe rendering problems with Klingon Academy. There is no currently known fix. The Number 9 Revolution IV card (Number 9 T2R4 chipset) on the system tested had an issue with graphics disappearing and reappearing depending upon which direction the player's ship was turned. There is no currently known fix. If you are experiencing massive graphical problems in Klingon Academy with the latest release drivers for your ATI Rage 128 and Rage Pro 128 chipset 3D card, there is a workaround. Go to ATI's website (http://www.ati.com) and download the appropriate special purpose Rage 128 Video Display driver for your operating system. -------------- WINDOWS 2000 -------------- Klingon Academy does not officially support Windows 2000 as it is in actuality the most recent release of the Windows NT Operating System. However, Klingon Academy has been tested under Windows 2000 and runs fairly well under optimal conditions but bugs specific to Windows 2000 have not been addressed nor is it likely they will be addressed. The following are Windows 2000 issues that we are aware of: Occasionally some players may encounter an issue with the keyboard buffer overflowing when issuing VOS commands. This appears to occur most frequently under Windows 2000. You may work around this problem by hitting ALT+TAB to go to the desktop and then hitting ALT+TAB again to go back into Klingon Academy. This will clear the buffer overflow. Aureal Vortex 2 sound cards have problems with volume control only for certain sound effects under Windows 2000. --------------------- INSTALLATION ISSUES --------------------- We have discoveres an issue with the MPlayer install. If you have TCP/IP enabled for your Ethernet card, but are connecting to the internet/MPlayer with a dial-up connection, you will be prompted to connect to your ISP over and over again. If you are being prompted to connect to your ISP multiple times during the MPlayer portion of the install, cancel out and connect to the internet PRIOR to installing the game. This way, the install will detect internet connectivity, and will not even bother prompting you to dial up. -------------------- MULTIPLAYER ISSUES -------------------- An inability to host Internet games through MPlayer has been experienced if the system attempting to host has a TCP/IP network card as well as a modem. There is a workaround. You must disable TCP/IP through your Ethernet card. To disable your TCP/IP through your Ethernet card: 1. Right click on Network Neighborhood and go to Properties 2. Left click the protocol labeled "TCP/IP -> [NETWORK ADAPTER MODEL]" so that it is highlighted 3. Left click the Remove button. 4. When prompted, restart your machine. Note: Ethernet Cards may vary from system to system. After restarting your machine, your TCP/IP through your Ethernet card should no longer be present in Network Neighborhood Properties. You should now be able to host a game on MPlayer. You will note that when you click IP in the Klingon Academy Multiplayer Net Lobby, only one IP address will be displayed. Prior to removing TCP/IP, two IP addresses would have been displayed. WARNING: Do not remove the protocol labeled "TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter". Joining games hosted by others is normal. * Note: [NETWORK ADAPTER MODEL] is your specific model of Network Adapter, i.e. 3Com Fast EtherLink XL 10/100Mb TX Ethernet NIC (3C905B-TX). =========================== MANUAL ERRATA AND ADDENDA =========================== ---------------------- UNDOCUMENTED OPTIONS ---------------------- OPTIONS - VIDEO - PARTICLE EMITTERS This check box allows the user to turn on and off particle emitters in Klingon Academy for performance reasons. OPTIONS - VIDEO - ALTERNATIVE CLIPPING This check box allows the user to choose a slightly different polygon clipping method for the engine. This may reduce clipping errors in the high detail starfield and some nebulas on certain video hardware. --------------- MANUAL ERRATA --------------- SENSOR (RADAR) DISPLAY This display shows the currently selected radar display. A single letter is listed below the sensor display indicating the range setting of the sensors. In all modes, known enemy vessels will appear as red dots, friendly vessels will appear as green dots, and unidentified vessels will appear as gray dots, and heavenly bodies will appear as blue dots. Ships that are detected while cloaked will appear as a blinking white dot. GUNNERY RADAR DISPLAY (STRIP RADAR) The Gunnery Radar is divided into five sections. The center section defines the area of the forward weapons arc. To the left of the forward weapons arc is the area of the port arc. To the right of the forward weapons arc is the starboard arc segment. The two small sections at the extreme left and right of the strip represent the aft arc. The small rectangular box represents the area you are currently viewing. The thick dashed line running horizontally through the radar strip represents the horizontal plane of your ship. Targets above this line are above your ship, and targets below the line are below your ship as well. The thinner dashed lines above and below the horizontal centerline indicate the maximum elevation/depression of the gunnery chair. As in the HUD radar modes, known enemy vessels will appear as red dots, friendly vessels will appear as green dots, and unidentified vessels will appear as gray dots, and heavenly bodies will appear as blue dots. Ships that are detected while cloaked will appear as a blinking white dot. ------------------- LAST MINUTE NOTES ------------------- Guidelines for Mapping the Keyboard: When mapping your keyboard, you may notice that some commands cannot be mapped to every key on the keyboard. The following guidelines will explain what keys are available for each game command. 1. The following keys are reserved, and cannot be mapped: 0 - 9, F9 - F12, Print Scrn, Scroll Lock, Pause, Caps Lock Esc and the Keypad. 2. Game functions that issue single, one-time command such as Cloaking Device, Next Target, and Match Speed cannot be mapped to the following keys: Shift, Ctrl, Alt, Backspace, Insert, Delete, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down and the Arrow keys. 3. Game functions where you can hold down a key to repeatedly issue a command, such as Fire Primary, Roll Right and Accelerate can be mapped to any available key. =================== QUICK START GUIDE =================== --------------------------------------- INSTALLING STAR TREK: KLINGON ACADEMY --------------------------------------- Place Star Trek: Klingon Academy CD-ROM #1 into your CD-ROM drive. After a few moments an auto-run screen should appear. This is the Klingon Academy launcher. If the launcher does not appear simply double click on "My Computer", then double click on the CD-ROM drive, and then double click on "Setup". If you have not installed Klingon Academy, the first button on the launcher will be labeled "Install Klingon Academy". To install the game, left click on this button and follow the instructions given by the install program. If you do not have DirectX 7, or if you are not sure if you do, click the "Install DirectX 7" button and follow the instructions. Users of the Windows 95 operating system who intend on playing Multiplayer games of Klingon Academy should click the "Install WinSock 2" button to install necessary networking files. (If you are unsure if you have already installed Winsock 2, click the "Setup" button on the launcher to see if Klingon Academy detects Winsock 2.0.) Users of Windows 98 do not need to do this, as the proper version of Winsock is already incorporated into their operating system. Once the game is installed, the "Install Klingon Academy" button will be replaced with a "Play Klingon Academy" button. Click this to begin play. ----------------------- KLINGON ACADEMY SETUP ----------------------- Star Trek: Klingon Academy supports a variety of game resolutions and video hardware, including multiple video card configurations. To select your game resolution and your display device in the case of multiple video card configurations, simply click the "Setup" button on the Launcher. A window will appear containing a pull-down menu used to select the video hardware you wish to use, a resolution list box, and an indicator showing if Winsock installation is required. DISPLAY DEVICE Click the downward pointing arrow to open the pull-down window. Click the desired display device to set it. SELECT RESOLUTION Highlight the desired game resolution from the list to select it. If nothing is listed, click the "Detect Available Resolutions" button to refresh the list.
