Company Store ############################################################## 1) General Information A) A message from George Lucas, Creative Director of Lucas Learning Ltd. Many years ago as a filmmaker I developed an interest in interactive technologies. As I began to work with them, I realized that they had great potential for opening up new kinds of learning experiences for young people. They offered an alternative to some of the traditional approaches to education that did not work for me as a youth. As a result, for over 15 years I've been committed to finding ways to capture kids' natural interest in learning and engage them more actively and productively in the learning process. Lucas Learning reflects my own passion for learning as it creates products like this one. The Gungan Frontier explores rich content in an immersive and entertaining environment as it engages the player in constructing and managing an ecosystem. I hope you enjoy the experience and that it will contribute to your own lifetime of learning. George Lucas B) Minimum System Requirements COMPUTER: 100% Windows 95/98 DirectX compatible computer required. NOTE: Your system may require the "latest" Windows 95/98 drivers for your particular hardware. GRAPHICS CARD: 2MB PCI Graphics card required. CPU: Pentium 166 or faster required. MEMORY: 32 MB or higher RAM required. CD-ROM: Quad speed IDE or SCSI CD-ROM drive required. SOUND CARD: 100% Windows 95/98 DirectX compatible 16-bit sound card required. INPUT DEVICE: 100% Windows 95/98 compatible keyboard and mouse required. DIRECTX: Microsoft DirectX 6.0 is included on this CD and must be installed to play The Gungan Frontier. Please refer to Installation and DirectX Setup in the Troubleshooting Guide for more information about DirectX. QUICKTIME: QuickTime 3.0.2 is included on this CD and must be installed to play The Gungan Frontier. Please refer to Installation and QuickTime 3.0.2 in the Troubleshooting Guide for more information about QuickTime. HARD DISK SPACE: Minimum Install requires 85 MB free hard drive space. Typical Install requires 210 MB. Large Install requires 270 MB. It is recommended that you have an additional 20 MB of free space available after installing the game for the Windows swap file. C) CD-ROM Safety Tips We do not recommend ejecting your Star Wars The Gungan Frontier CD while the game is running. Exit out of the game before ejecting the CD from the drive. D) Laptop Systems While Star Wars The Gungan Frontier should work fine on most systems that meet the minimum hardware specifications, it has NOT been tested with laptop systems and therefore we can NOT guarantee compatibility. Due to the wide variety of hardware configurations that ship with today's laptop systems, it would be impossible to configure a game that would work with all of them. Many laptops are limited in their ability to be used as a gaming machine because of memory configurations, their microchannel architecture, port configurations (i.e. no place for a joystick) and sound systems that are primarily designed to be used with productivity software. Laptop systems will also attempt to compress the traditional version of the standard 101-function keyboard (found on almost all desktop systems) into a much smaller key configuration. This is usually done by relying on multi-function keys that allow the user to assign different functions to the same key. Unfortunately, this has been known to cause problems with our games. E) OEM Features on Brand Name Machines Many brand name computers come with a variety of features provided by the manufacturer, including special buttons on the keyboard or special functions assigned to buttons common to all keyboards. In general, we recommend that you do not use the special 'bells and whistles' your machine came with while playing Star Wars The Gungan Frontier. Contact the manufacturer of your computer for more information. F) Task Switching (or ALT-TAB) Task switching is not supported in Star Wars The Gungan Frontier. If you need to access another program on your computer while running the game, you must first quit out of the game. G) Game Crash Issues If the game unexpectedly freezes up, returns you to your desktop, or if you experience any other severe problems, you should try to properly exit Windows and reboot your computer. (As a rule, you should never turn off your computer while the hard drive is active.) This will help to prevent possible problems related to the error that you have experienced. If you end up at a black screen or the screen appears frozen, please press ESC, SPACEBAR, or ENTER before trying anything else. If your screen remains black for an extended period of time, restart your computer. H) Internet Explorer 4.0 Active Desktop If you are using Internet Explorer 4.0, we recommend that you disable Active Desktop before playing Star Wars The Gungan Frontier. Active Desktop uses memory and resources that the game may need. I) Uninstalling The Gungan Frontier You may uninstall The Gungan Frontier by clicking on the UNINSTALL THE GUNGAN FRONTIER button on The Gungan Frontier launcher. Then follow the on-screen prompts to complete the uninstall process. You may also uninstall the game by selecting PROGRAMS, then LUCAS LEARNING, then THE GUNGAN FRONTIER, then UNINSTALL THE GUNGAN FRONTIER from the Windows Start menu. If you uninstall The Gungan Frontier using the Windows Start Menu shortcut or Add/Remove Programs, your saved games, created critters, Save Picture files, and The Gungan Frontier Options file will not be removed. You will need to manually remove these files from your hard drive. 2) Playing Star Wars The Gungan Frontier A) Create-a-Critter 1) 50 Saved Critters Limit Although there are literally millions of variations of critters you can create in the Create-a-Critter section of The Gungan Frontier, you can only save up to 50 of these special critters. If you have already created 50 critters and wish to create more, you must first delete some of your previously saved critters. 2) Naming Your Create-a-Critters You may assign names to your created critters that use the standard English alphabet letters, A through Z only. Numbers and other special characters (e.g. "%") are not supported in Create-a-Critter naming. A Kresch entry is generated for each critter you make in Create-a-Critter. However, if you assign a name to one of your created critters that is the same as an entry that already exists in the Kresch (e.g. 'Plant'), when you try to open the Kresch entry for the critter you made, the Kresch will open to the original entry instead. You will be able to scroll to your created critters using the NEXT and PREVIOUS buttons in the Kresch. However, we recommend that you assign names to your created critters that are unique from anything that is already listed in the Kresch. 3) Deleting a Saved Create-a-Critter If you delete a saved create-a-critter, you will not be able to load any saved games in which that critter was used. You will need to delete those saved games. B) Skipping Movies To skip through any of The Gungan Frontier movies, you may either click the left mouse button or press the ESC or SPACE key on your keyboard. In multiple-movie sequences, clicking the left mouse button will skip one movie at a time. Pressing the ESC or SPACE key on your keyboard will skip all movies in any sequence. C) Exiting the Player Select Screen To exit the Player Select screen and return to the Main Menu BEFORE selecting a player (Obi-Wan or Queen Amidala), press ESC on your keyboard. D) Keyboard Commands To view a list of keyboard commands while playing the game, move your mouse to the top of the screen to make the Menu Bar appear, then select KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS from the Help menu. KEY FUNCTION P Turns Pause on/off Space Opens Food Web/Index or closes currently open display N Names current lifeform F Finds current lifeform V Toggles surface/city view W Opens Food Web screen I Opens Index screen G Opens Graph screen L Opens Landscape screen H Opens Harvest screen K Opens the Kresch M Toggles critter cam on/off R Sets tool to Release C Sets tool to Capture B Sets tool to Bio-scan S Sets tool to Stun A to Z When in Index or Kresch, A-Z scroll to the first lifeform, or entry, that starts with that letter Arrow Keys Scroll surface/city view Left/Right Arrows Previous and Next in the Kresch Up/Down Arrows Previous and Next in Index +/- Zoom surface/city view Rotate surface view Help/F1 Toggles Bubble Help on/off Caps Lock ON Disables food auto-release in Beginner game ESC Exit the Player Select screen before selecting a character Control-S Saves your game E) Disabled Controls 1) In the Training Mission Keyboard and mouse controls are disabled in the Training Mission until you need them to carry out the narrator's instructions. 2) In the Site Selection and Ship Loading Sequences Keyboard controls are disabled during the Site Selection and Ship Loading game sequences. F) Number Pad Arrow Keys The arrow keys on the number pad will not function in the game if "Num Lock" is turned on. Turn "Num Lock" off if you wish to use these arrow keys while playing. G) Pausing the Game To pause the game during play, move your cursor to the top of the screen to make the Menu Bar appear. Select PAUSE from the Settings menu. A check mark will appear next to the word 'Pause' in the Settings menu while the game is paused. To unpause the game, click the Settings menu and select PAUSE again; the check mark will disappear and the game will resume. You can also press the 'P' key on your keyboard to pause the game; press 'P' again to resume play. NOTE: The Pause function is not supported in the Training Mission. H) Spinning Critter Cam When Critter Cam is turned on in the game, the game camera will follow every movement of the selected animal as the animal weaves its way across the surface of the moon. To make things more interesting, when the Spinning Critter Cam feature is turned on in the Options screen, your probe droid will also attempt to physically follow the selected animal, causing your view of the surface of the moon to rotate. The result is that when you turn Critter Cam off, you may be facing a different area of the moon than the Map reflects. If this happens to you, do not despair. Notice the little line on the side of the Location Indicator (the blue circle) on the Map. This line will help you determine which way is the top of your screen in comparison to the Map. To turn the spinning component of Critter Cam off, move your cursor to the top of the main game screen to bring down the menu bar. Click on SETTINGS to open the Settings menu, then select OPTIONS. In the Options screen, click the SPINNING CRITTER CAM button. I) Game Windows 1) Clicking Outside of a Game Window When a game window, such as the Harvest screen, is open, clicking outside of that window will cause the window to close. 2) Accessing Bubble Help from a Game Window To access Bubble Help from within a game window without closing the window, press F1 on your keyboard. 3) Saving from Within a Game Window To save your game from within a game window without closing the window, press CTRL-S on your keyboard. J) Bubble Help Errata 1) Landscape Droid The Bubble Help for the Landscape Droid states, "Kaadu lay their eggs only in mud." This statement is incorrect. Kaadu lay their eggs in both sand and mud. K) Contacting Boss Nass 1) Before Building an Ecosystem Boss Nass can only be contacted via the Boss Nass button after you have 50 lifeforms (plants or animals) in your ecosystem. 2) While Playing a Mission Boss Nass can not be contacted via the Boss Nass button while you are playing a Mission. L) Jar Jar Asleep During Missions In the in-game Settings menu, you have the option to tell Jar Jar to go to sleep ("Jar Jar Asleep"). During the Missions, the Jar Jar Asleep option is automatically turned on. You can not wake Jar Jar up while playing Missions. M) Understanding the Bio-Score The Bio-Score counter appears in the upper right corner of the main game screen. The number shown in the Bio-Score counter is not a simple sum of the number of lifeforms on the moon. Rather, it represents your score, which is based both on how many lifeforms and how many DIFFERENT SPECIES of lifeforms are on the surface of the moon. Although the Bio-Score is not a simple population indicator, you can view a graph of your Bio-score by clicking the GRAPHS button on the main ship console, or by pressing G on your keyboard. N) Cannibalistic Carnivores Some of the carnivorous animals in The Gungan Frontier, e.g. the nyork, are cannibals. In other words, if no other food is available for them, they will eat members of their own species. Food is not auto-released in the Beginner game for a cannibalistic carnivore if you have no other food source besides its own species loaded on your ship for that critter. O) Hyperlinks in the Kresch The Kresch contains hundreds of hyperlinks (click on a bold, colored word in a Kresch entry, and the entry for that word will open). However, while the same word may be used in different contexts in separate entries, each usage is hyperlinked to the same entry, regardless of context. This is due to the Kresch being only quasi- sentient, unlike you! :-) P) Understanding Harvest Levels Consult the CIVILIZATION area of the Kresch for detailed explanations of the various Harvest levels used in The Gungan Frontier. Q) Selectable Items in the Bio-Scan Window Items that are displayed in yellow text in the Bio-Scan window are selectable: clicking on one of these items will bring up information relating to the currently selected critter. For example, click on the number next to "Population" to open the Population Graph for the selected critter. R) Improving Performance Star Wars The Gungan Frontier features complex simulations of a swamp ecosystem and underwater Gungan city. As such, it will push your computer's processor and CD-ROM drive to their limits. However, there are several things you can do to improve the game's performance: Use a larger install. Although The Gungan Frontier can read data directly from the CD, it is always faster to access data directly from your hard drive. Installing a larger installation of The Gungan Frontier to your hard drive will make the game run more smoothly. Quit all other applications. Running other applications in the background may cause The Gungan Frontier to pause during gameplay, due to the other applications requiring access to your computer's various resources. We recommend quitting all other applications prior to running The Gungan Frontier. Turn off Performance Options in the Options screen. For optimal performance, turn all Performance Options off. To access The Gungan Frontier Options screen, click OPTIONS on The Gungan Frontier Main Menu screen, or select OPTIONS from the Settings menu on the in-game Menu Bar. NOTE: Turning off any of the Performance Options will change the way the game looks on your screen. Lower the Terrain Quality in the Options screen. For optimal performance, set the Terrain Quality to Low. NOTE: Lowering the Terrain Quality will lower the level of detail with which the ground and ground cover plants are drawn on your screen. Turn off Full Screen Movies in the Options screen. In the Options screen, you have the option to view Full Screen Movies. Turning this option off may improve the performance of the movies on your system. Please see the Troubleshooting Guide on this CD for more information about improving performance of The Gungan Frontier. S) Options Settings in Saved Games The selections you make in the game Options screen will not be saved in your saved games, as these settings are designed to affect the program as a whole, not individual playing sessions. T) Viewing Your Saved Pictures In The Gungan Frontier, you may save a picture of your ecosystem or underwater Gungan city using the "Save Picture" feature (move your cursor to the top of the main game screen to bring down the Menu Bar, then click on the FILE menu, and select SAVE PICTURE.) To look at the pictures you have saved, first quit out of the game. Next, open The Gungan Frontier folder from the Lucas Learning program folder on your hard drive (or the location to which you installed it). The files for your saved pictures will appear in this folder, titled "Screendump1.bmp," "Screendump2.bmp," etc. Double-click on the file you wish to view, and the picture will open. NOTE: We recommend that you open your Save Picture files in the Paint program that is included with Windows. Other programs of this type may not let you view the pictures, or the pictures may appear corrupted. These pictures can also be opened in some word processing programs if you have the correct graphics filters installed on your computer. 3) Control Issues A) Joystick Issues The Gungan Frontier does not support joysticks. B) Gamepad Issues The Gungan Frontier does not support gamepads. 4) Sound Issues If you find that the music in the game is too loud or too quiet and you are unable to change the volume through the Gungan Frontier Options screen, you may adjust these levels using the Windows Volume Control icon. To do this, first quit out of the game, then double-click on the speaker icon in the right corner of the Windows task bar. You may then adjust the volumes as desired. 5) How to Contact Lucas Learning Ltd. Please see the Troubleshooting Guide on the CD for late-breaking news and help.
