Version 1.32 information --- Graphics configuration screen. If you are NOT having performance problems DO NOT change any settings. If someone has a similar card to yours and you want to dupe his settings you can just enter a code that is created in the box. If you accidentally change some settings the default code is... 4000-000g-0zw0 With so many new 3D & accelerated graphics cards out there we thought it would be useful for players to have much more control over their graphics settings. In the new "Advanced Options" menu you will discover a configurability screen. Each card will perform differently depending on what you load into system memory (this is all the boxes on the left) A box that is UNCHECKED will attempt to place that item into video memory. So the boxes you check are the ones that are not placed on your video card. So if you uncheck all the boxes then it will attempt to put everything in video ram. The major one that should usually remain in system RAM is FONTS. As a rule you will find three configs will work for different cards here. 1.) ALL UNCHECKED 2.) ALL CHECKED 3.) DEFAULT (4000-000g-0zw0) To the right of the box are some other options.... Software Emulation - Check this if you are receiving the "Can not allocate DirectDraw Surface" error message when starting the game. Skip Splash Screen - Removes the "Subspace" Woosh lettering that zooms up when you launch the app. Avoid Page flipping - Most likely to help the Riva chip set and other very powerful cards. Should speed things up greatly for "super" graphics cards. Triple/System Buffer - This option has 2 uses. If you ARE page flipping this option makes it triple buffer, if you are NOT page flipping then this option forces the back buffer into system memory. This option can cause SEVERE slow downs on many cards so DON'T USE IT IF YOU ARE NOT EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS OR UNCLEAR ABOUT ITS FUNCTION. Gamma Correction (Brightness) - Allows you to define your own level of gamme correction (in percentage) The higher the number the more the graphics will wash out. (Popular settings are usually found in the range of 90 to 130) VIDEO INTRODUCTION ISSUES--- If you are experiencing choppy or non-functional video playback you can select a lower resolution version of the video from the CD. All available versions of the introduction are located in a folder titled "Intro" The intro is available in six different levels of quality. They are: 160x120 at 15 Frames Per Second (13.6 MB) (LOWEST QUALITY, USE THIS VERSION IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH THE DEFAULT INTRO) 160x120 at 30 Frames Per Second (21.7 MB) 320x240 at 15 Frames Per Second (38.9 MB) (DEFAULT) 320x240 at 30 Frames Per Second (67.0 MB) 640x480 at 15 Frames Per Second (112.0 MB) 640x480 at 30 Frames Per Second (203.0 MB) (HIGHEST QUALITY, ONLY RECOMMENDED FOR PENTIUM II MACHINES) Each version of the file is located inside its own folder inside the "Intro" folder on the CD. Inside each folder you will find two files. One is a video file (intro.flc) and one is an audio file (intro.wav) 1) Using the Windows Explorer (which is found by pressing the Start Button and selecting programs) 2) Select your CD-ROM drive, ie. D: (Substitute the appropriate letter for your CD-ROM drive if it is other than D:) Double-Click on the "Intro" folder in the window on the right. This will display the folders containing the different versions of the introduction. 3) Double-Click on the folder that represents the version of the intro you want to use. IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH THE DEFAULT INTRO CHOOSE THE FOLDER NAMED "160x120 15fps" This should bring up two files named "intro.flc" and "intro.wav" 4) Under the Edit Menu at the top of the screen, choose "Select All". This should highlight the two files in the window on the right. 5) Return to the Edit Menu at the top of the screen, and choose "Copy" 6) Go to the Drive you installed SubSpace on. (C: , D:, etc...) 7) Select the SubSpace folder. You should see "Contents of 'C:\SubSpace'" above the window on the right if you installed into the default folder. 8) Again, Under the Edit Menu at the top of the screen, choose "Paste". This will copy the necessary files to the SubSpace folder. 9) Now, Start the game and click the "Play Intro" button. It will now play your new intro. YOU MAY REPEAT THIS PROCESS WITH HIGHER QUALITY INTRODUCTIONS IF YOUR MACHINE IS RUNNING YOUR CURRENT CHOICE EXCEPTIONALLY WELL. BARE IN MIND THE HIGHER QUALITY INTRODUCTIONS USE PROGRESSIVELY MORE HARD DRIVE SPACE. ADVANCED USER VIDEO INTRODUCTION NOTES --- Higher quality versions of the audio are also available on the CD. They require that you have the appropriate amount of RAM available. In the "Audio" folder located in the "Intro" folder on the CD, you will find four folders describing the various levels of quality available. Copy the intro.wav file from the appropriate folder to the folder you installed SubSpace. 22Khz, Mono (3.21 MB) (DEFAULT) 22Khz, Stereo (6.42 MB) 44Khz, Mono (6.42 MB) 44Khz, Stereo (12.8 MB) (CD Quality)
