System Requirements --------------------------------------- PC Pentium 166 MHz (recommended 233 MHz), Win 95/98/ME/2000 16 MB RAM (recommended 64 MB) min. 2 MB graphics adaptor 8x CD-ROM drive (recommended 16x) Sound card Mouse min. 34 MB of free hard disk space --------------------------------------- 2. Installation --------------------------------------- Installation is automatic under Windows 95/98/ME/2000. Just insert the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. The installation program then starts automatically. If you change your mind and do not want to install, simply click on CANCEL. If your computer does not support AutoPlay, click on the START button in your tool bar. Then select RUN. Type D:/SETUP.EXE and press ENTER. (If D is not the letter of your CD-ROM drive, please enter the appropriate letter). 2.1. Performance For the optimum running of the program, the following must be observed: - The maximum installation should be carried out when sufficient memory space is present on the hard disk. - Close all other programs before starting the program. 2.2. Memory The program should run on a computer with a minimum of 16 MB main memory. Under certain circumstances, it may occur that 16 MB of memory is insufficient. Certain functions of the game are then turned off due to lack of memory and you will receive the corresponding error message. In this case, you should ensure that at the start of the application, sufficient virtual main memory is available on the hard disk (minimum 64 MB) and also that no other programs are active. --------------------------------------- 3. How do I move through the program? --------------------------------------- When the program starts, you will notice that when you use the mouse to move your cursor around the screen there are various different types of arrow. These arrows are used to guide the characters through the program. Clicking on the mouse will direct the characters. The blue arrow is the standard pointer. If it shows a blue point it means that this part of the screen is inactive and there is nothing to click on. When the mouse cursor looks yellow this means there is something to click on. This action will allow you to interact with characters, pick up objects and take them with you or even zoom in for a close up. --------------------------------------- 4. How do I use the inventory? --------------------------------------- The inventory appears when you click once on the active character, either George or Dick. George and Dick can collect items as the adventure progresses, and carry them along for use later. If you want to use one of the collected items later, just click on it in the area on the screen next to the backpack whilst holding the left mouse button down. As long as you hold the mouse button down you can move the item to any place you like. Once the item is where you want to use it, click the mouse normally and the item will be dropped in place. --------------------------------------- 5. The Map --------------------------------------- You can use the map on the postcard to jump easily from one place to the next without having to walk the whole distance. You can call up the map any time you like with the F2 key or you can use your mouse to direct the cursor to the lower left corner of the screen and click on the Famous Five logo that will appear there. --------------------------------------- 6. Main Menu --------------------------------------- In order to enter the Main Menu, you can either press the F1 key, or you can use your mouse to direct the cursor to the lower left corner of the screen you can click on the menu logo that will appear next to the Famous Five logo. The only time this won't work is when you are in the middle of a game and there is an animation or a dialogue going on. In the Main Menu you can either begin a new game, save a game already in progress, or load a game you have saved previously. Save Game Click on a free saving space and type in a note on the present state of the game. Then confirm your entry with RETURN. When you load the game the next time, you can start playing again exactly at the spot where you saved it. --------------------------------------- 7. Options --------------------------------------- The main menu also gives you access to the OPTIONS MENU. If the image on the screen becomes unsteady, you can use the Options Menu to shut off various special effects, such as shadows or background animation. Here is where you can also set the volume for speech and music! --------------------------------------- 8.
