Uninstalling The Tone Rebellion Installation Information ------------------------ Installing The Tone Rebellion involves two simple steps: 1) Install the main application (you may have just done this!) 2) Install the Microsoft DirectX drivers (may not be necessary) Both of these are accomplished by installing the CDROM into your CD drive. On most Windows95 systems, you will automatically be presented with the above options. If inserting the CDROM does not cause the Tone Rebellion startup application to appear within several seconds, simply run the application "autorun.exe" located in the root directory of your CDROM drive. The Tone Rebellion requires DirectX5 to function properly. If you do not already have DirectX5 installed, or are unsure about which version you may have installed, choose the option "Install DirectX" from the startup application. Version checking is performed to ensure that only the latest drivers are installed, and you may revert to your previous drivers through DirectX in the Control Panel if the newer drivers cause problems on your system. You can try to run the game without installing these drivers if you think you may already have DirectX installed. If the game does not function properly, install the drivers. Most applications, even those written for previous versions of DirectX, will benefit from the increased speed and reliability of the DirectX5 drivers. Viewing the Introduction ------------------------ The introduction can be viewed from the start menu under The Tone Rebellion. You must have the CD in the drive to view the intro. Once the screen comes up, to watch the intro full screen, right-click on the window, and select "Fullscreen" under the movie-size tab, or press Alt-Enter to flip between fullscreen and windowed mode during playback. The introduction plays from the CD and is designed to run well on a 4x CDROM drive. If the movie will not play correctly, you may need to install the Microsoft ActiveMovie player. This can be accomplished by selecting 'Active Movie' from the install application. Running The Tone Rebellion -------------------------- Once the Tone Rebellion has been installed, you may run it in one of two ways: 1) From the Start menu, under "Programs - The Tone Rebellion" 2) From the startup application that runs from the CD drive For information related to gameplay, see the sections below titled "Keyboard Commands" and "Gameplay", and the rough draft of the manual that came with this version. Gameplay -------- When you start, your tribe consists of several worker floaters and a small building - these are the lone survivors of the great upheaval. You start near a tone pool which provides tone flow to a small area. You will want to begin by building a Structure-Tone generator to start providing structural tone which can be used to build other buildings. Once a Structure-Tone generator is built, you begin building other buildings to spread tone to new location and protect the well-being of your tribe. While playing, you will be interacting primarily with your buildings. Unlike many other games, your orders are given to buildings - not individual floaters. Some buildings have a staff of floaters, which will respond to any orders given. Your goal is to guide your tribe of floaters from their home island, explore the cluster of islands that comprise your world, find the hiding place of the Leviathan, and defeat it. You need to activate the special location on each island (by yourself in a single player game), recovering the islands' glyphs. To defeat the Leviathan, you will have to bring all of these glyphs to the lair of the Leviathan and use them there. See the Tutorial booklet for a quick play-through to get started, and see the manual that came with this copy of the game for more detailed information. Multiplayer ----------- Multiplayer play is support for IPX networks, TCPIP, direct link, and modem. 2-4 players are supported. IPX is the simplest model if your computer is on a LAN, since no additional information is needed before gameplay can begin. TCPIP requires that all players know the tcpip address of the host player, and that the host player create a session before others join. To play multiplayer, choose "Multiplayer Rebellion" from the start menu or the CDROM startup application. You will be presented with a list of connection options that your computer supports. In any multiplayer setup, one player will be considered the "host" of the game and other players the "clients". You must know the host TCPIP address to play over the internet, or a phone number to play via modem. For LAN and direct serial connections, no special knowledge is required. It is advisable to have the host machine be the 'average' or slower speed machine if you have this knowledge. Also, if your connection speed is less than optimal, you can improve the smoothness of gameplay by turning off the digital music from within the game. When joining a session, hit "Finish" when you see all the players you are going to play with. You will then see a mostly black screen while you wait for all players to synchronize. Once all players have hit Finish and synchronized, players will choose their tribe. Once all players have chosen a tribe, the host player can click "begin" to start the game, although the size and difficulty of the game may also be adjusted beforehand. Once the game has begun, you can communicate with other players by sending text messages back and forth. To send a message, hit the 'Enter' key and type your message. Hit 'Enter' again to send it. If you wish to cancel a message, Backspace over the text and hit 'Enter'. The host player can initiate a new game from within the game once play has begun, or after a game is completed, by going back to the new game screen. All other players will be automatically recruited to the new game screen when the host player does this. Keyboard Commands ----------------- CTRL-number pad minus (gray -), also Slows down the game CTRL-number pad plus (gray +), also Speed up the game Exit the game DirectDraw display mode 1 (fullscreen) DirectDraw display mode 2 (fullscreen) DirectDraw display mode 3 (fullscreen) Native win95 display (windowed) NOTE: The windowed mode (Ctrl-4) is the mode most likely to work on any given machine, since it does not use DirectDraw and requires no special drivers. The DirectDraw modes differ in the way they write to the screen, and hence performance may vary. DirectDraw mode 2 (Ctrl-2) is the most compatible mode, while mode 1 seems to be the highest performance for cards that support page flipping. The application defaults to DirectDraw mode 2 (fullscreen). Uninstalling The Tone Rebellion ------------------------------- To uninstall The Tone Rebellion, select "Add/Remove Programs" from the Control Panel (accessed through "Settings" on the Start menu). Note that any files (such as save games) that were not copied to your computer as part of the install WILL NOT be removed automatically. If such files exist, you will be notified at the end of the uninstall process. To remove these files, look in the directory in which you installed The Tone Rebellion, and delete them manually.
