========================================== Course Architect™ Version 10.10.00 ========================================== The Course Architect Readme contains the latest information regarding creating and editing your own custom courses. This text is an addendum to the documentation supplied with the software; for further instructions please read the Help Topics manual. Note: If you are having trouble reading the end of the lines while using the Notepad program, you can select "Word Wrap" in the "Edit Menu" to turn on word wrap. ------------------------------------------ RUNNING COURSE ARCHITECT™ ------------------------------------------ Make sure that you install Course Architect through the Setup program before building your first course. Do not run Architect by double clicking the Architect.exe on the CD. You cannot run Course Architect directly from the CD. If you have Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2001 already installed on your machine, you can install Course Architect through the Start menu. Start menu > EA SPORTS > Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2001 > Install Course Architect from Disc 2. Follow the instructions in the Setup program. ------------------------------------------ SYSTEM CONSIDERATIONS ------------------------------------------ Any time you are working with large areas of terrain (e.g. selecting, copy/pasting, etc.), or large numbers of objects (e.g.populating), you may experience reduced performance in the tool. To improve performance, we recommend that you work with smaller areas of terrain or fewer objects. Tool performance will vary depending on the configuration of your machine. Minimum Configuration * Windows® 95 or Windows®98 (Windows NT is not supported) * 200 MHz or faster Intel® Pentium® processor * 64 MB RAM * 4x CD-ROM drive (600K/second transfer rate) using 32-bit Windows 95/98CD-ROM driver * High Color (65,535 color) capable 1 MB PCI video card (3-D Graphics acceleration not supported) * 210 MB free hard disk space * Keyboard, mouse Recommended Configuration * 450 MHz or faster Intel® Pentium® III processor * 256 MB RAM * 4x or faster CD-ROM drive using 32-bit Windows 95/98 CD-ROM driver * 600 MB free hard disk space * Keyboard, mouse ------------------------------------------ THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN STARTING A NEW COURSE ------------------------------------------ Creating A New Course We recommend that you create your new course in the default location. If you use excessively long folder names or bury them under too many subdirectories you may experience unnecessary headaches while building your course. Keep things short and simple. Deleting Project Files or Courses If you delete a course or project file (*.jpj), Course Architect will ask you if you would like to open the old project. Click "NO" to start the tool and then create your new course project as described in the Help Topics manual. Importing Terrain When you import terrain as a grayscale image (*.bmp, *.pcx or *.tga), some of the elevations may not appear as smooth as you would expect. This gradient method for generating the elevations creates subtle unevenness in the terrain that can easily be smoothed as you refine and work on your course. ------------------------------------------ ADDITIONAL NOTES ON EDITING TOOLS & SETTINGS ------------------------------------------ Closing View Windows You should always leave at least either the 2D and 3D window open. If you do close both the 2D and 3D windows without shutting down the program, you can bring them back up on the screen by using the HOLE SELECT drop down box to select the hole you were working on. Your hole data will be reloaded and the windows will be visible once again. Linear Tool The Linear tool is designed to create a cone effect for a selected area of terrain. It is not intended to function with small line selections. Tilt Tool Although you can Undo the changes you make in the terrain using the Tilt tool, you cannot Undo the placement of the tilt axis (blue crosshair). If you do not like the location of your tilt axis, you can clear your selection and start over. Or, you can click another tool icon then back to the Tilt icon. This reinitializes the Tilt tool so you can reposition the tilt axis, without losing your selected area. 2D Grid Settings The 2D Grid Settings can be a useful tool for eyeballing the distance between various features of your course. The flexibility of the settings allows for custom increments that are helpful for any magnification you chose for the 2D window. Example: When you are zoomed in close you may choose a 1-yard grid and while working with the entire hole visible you may want a 10-yard grid. Play with the settings until you find one that works for you. Importing New Textures It is important to remember that the first eleven textures are standard features of golf courses and as such, they react in a predetermined way. When importing new textures over the default textures it is good to consider the characteristics of the texture you are replacing. Try to replace the default textures with like textures to avoid any unnecessary work. This way your new textures will react in a predictable way. Special Note: The in-game commentator makes his comments based upon these standardized characteristics. The standardized textures are as follows: 1. Fairway 2. Sand 3. Rough 4. Deep Rough 5. Water 6. Tee 7. Green 8. Dirt 9. Out of Bounds 10. Cart Path 11. Fringe For example, if you decide to import an ocean texture into the Fairway slot, you will have to make changes in the texture characteristics in the Advanced Properties in the texture browser. It will create less work for you by importing the ocean texture into the Water slot or into one of the Unique texture slots. Refer to the Help Topics with in the tool for more in depth instruction. When you import a new texture, the image is copied to the textures directory of the course you are working on and converts it to proprietary format that is useable by the tool. Transparency colors for Imported Objects You can choose any color as your background transparency color. You'll notice that most of the images in the Content Library use a magenta color for the background. It is a good idea to use an obvious color like the magenta for your background transparency color. This makes it easy to locate when you are setting the transparency color for imported objects. Imported custom objects should have at least eight colors in them for the transparency color and shadow casting to work properly. Object Size Course Architect makes scaling your objects easy. You can simply set the height you like for the object in the Advanced Object properties. For small objects, you don't need to make small images. You can create them at a higher resolution, rather than trying to match the intended height. Do not make objects with dimensions less than 11x11 pixels. See the Objects section of the Help Topics manual for more information. Placing Objects If you are selecting an object in the Object Browser and want to place it on the terrain, either the 2D or the 3D window must be active. Changing Your Display Resolution While Architect Is Open If you need to change the display resolution, color depth or video card settings of your monitor, please save your work and close Course Architect first. Closing the Program It is always a good idea to save your work before closing the program. If you choose to force the tool to close using CTL+ALT+DEL your data may not be saved properly or become corrupt. ------------------------------------------ GETTING YOUR WORK INTO THE GAME ------------------------------------------ Note To Tiger Woods 99 Users The earliest version of Tiger Woods 99 does not support customized physics. The game will not recognize the settings you may have made for custom textures. To get the latest updates, you can run the Upgrade Check in the Tiger Woods 99 Start menu. If for some reason you do not have Tiger Woods 99, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2000 or Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2001 installed on your machine, you can still copy your playable course to the its default directories. The default directories are as follows: Tiger Woods 99 C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\Tiger Woods 99\Data\Courses Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2000 C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2000\Data\Courses Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2001 C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2001\Data\Courses Playing Your Course Do not delete the green from your courses. The game looks for the "end" of your hole and requires this. You must also have some playable "in-bounds" areas on your hole. ------------------------------------------ ONLINE RESOURCES ------------------------------------------ Electronic Arts is busy creating an online resource where you can get the latest news and updates for Course Architect .
