===================== Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR® Golf Classic PCCD Ver. 08.10.98.12.00 ===================== The Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf Read Me contains the latest information regarding installation, hardware, network, and gameplay compatibility information. This text is an addendum to the documentation supplied with the game software; for further instructions please read the game's manual and reference card. Note: If you are having trouble reading the end of the lines while using the Notepad program, you can select "Word Wrap" in the "Edit Menu" to turn on word wrap. ------------- Installation ------------- Important: It is highly recommended that you exit all other applications before installing Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf. By default, the game installs to C:\Program Files\EA Sports\Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf. When installing the game, there are five options: Typical, Compact, Laptop, Complete and Custom: Typical: Installs the Pebble Beach Golf Links and the necessary program files (approx. 290 MB). A default golfer with the Tiger Woods animation is also installed. If you prefer to install more golfers to the hard drive, see 'Custom' below. The Typical install will require you to insert the game CD during play for golfer information. Compact: Installs the minimum program files to hard drive (approx. 65 MB). This option will require you to insert the game CD during play for course and golfer information. Complete: A Full Install. This option loads the entire contents (approx. 505 MB) of the game CD onto your hard drive. This is the optimum install for users with plenty of drive space that don't want to have to access the CD during gameplay. Laptop: This install size (approx. 340 MB) is aimed at laptop PC users or those who do not necessarily want to use the game CD to play the game, but have to economize hard drive space. This installs all Course and Golfer data, as well as the necessary program files. However, to see videos with this install type, the CD must be inserted. Custom: Allows you to select any combination of files to be installed to hard drive. You can install all features of the game, including any or all golfers, the Pebble Beach Golf Links, and other available courses. Simply click the checkbox for the component you want to install in the 'Select Components' menu of the Custom installation. PGA TOUR Pro and PGA TOUR Gold owners: There is no need to uninstall PGA TOUR Pro or PGA TOUR Gold before installing Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf. Installing Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf will NOT overwrite any essential data from PGA TOUR Pro. AUTO PATCH Update: After installing the game and running it for the first time, a prompt will appear asking you whether or not you would like to check for Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf updates that may be available from the EA Sports Golf Server. (An active Internet connection is required to use the Update Checker) Click Yes to check for an update, No to skip the update check and run the game. The latest version of the game is required in order to participate in Internet tournaments. The update check will run once every 30 days. If you wish to check for updates at any other time, Just click on "Upgrade Check" in Start>Programs>EA SPORTS>TigerWoods 99 PGA TOUR. ACCESSING THE EA HELP GUIDE: From the WINDOWS 95 START MENU, access the Program Group where Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf is installed (usually in the EA SPORTS Program Group) then click on the EA Help icon. From the Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf CD, open the TW99 folder and click on Eahelp.hlp. REGARDING WINDOWS® 95/98: To ensure that Windows runs efficiently for all of its applications, it is HIGHLY recommended you leave at least 100 MB free on your hard drive. Windows needs this space to perform virtual memory functions such as file swapping from RAM to hard drive. If for any reason the game's performance seems to be hindered by hardware limitations, try reducing your resolution in the Options window of the game's Main menu. Also, in 3D Options, try lowering Object Detail and Texture settings. Screen Savers: Screen savers are automatically turned off during installation and gameplay. On some systems you may need to turn your screen saver back on after you have installed Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf or any of it's components. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please consult your system's documentation for more information on setting your screen saver. ---------------------------------------------- More Courses and Golfers Installation ---------------------------------------------- Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf is compatible with courses that came with PGA TOUR 96 for Windows 95, PGA TOUR Pro, PGA TOUR Gold, the Classic Courses CD, the Spanish Bay course disc, PGA TOUR 96 and PGA TOUR Laptop. To install any of these courses to Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf, use the More Courses and Golfers installation option in START\Programs\EA Sports\Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf. You will be prompted to choose which courses you would like to install. Some golfers from PGA TOUR Gold, and PGA TOUR Pro are also available to install. During the installation you will be prompted to insert the Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf Auxiliary disc. This disc contains course data upgrades that work in conjunction with older course discs. The Auxiliary disc is not a stand-alone course disc; it is only necessary when you have older PGA courses that you would like to use with Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf. ------------------------------- Play Guide Documentation ------------------------------- We've included some extra documentation for you to help enhance your experience in playing Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf. Please note, the Play Guide was designed to work best in 800x600 Screen Resolution with the "normal" or "small" size font. You can access the Play Guide as follows: 1. Insert the Play Guide / Auxiliary disc into your CD-ROM drive 2. Open the your CD and double-click the "PlayG" folder 3. Double-click the Tiger99.hlp icon The included setbrows.exe utility allows you to set your default Internet browser (one or more need to already be installed), so you can access the website shortcuts included in the Play Guide. Note: Although the Play Guide is an enhanced Windows help file, it does not support all the standard help options. For instance, if you get stuck in trying to use the "annotate mode", press the ESC key to exit that mode. ----------------------------- Golfer Information ----------------------------- Golfer not found on hard drive: If a game is configured with a golfer that has not been installed to hard drive, a dialog box will appear at TEE OFF requesting that you insert the game CD. At this point, you can cancel the game (and reinstall using the Custom install option, or the More Courses and Golfers Installation), or insert the game disc (the golfer animation will be accessed by the game disc). You will only be requested to insert the disc one time per golfer for a game. REGARDING INTERNET, LAN, or MODEM PLAY: If you are playing a game with an opponent who is using a golfer that is not installed on your hard drive, a dialog box will appear requesting that you insert the game disc. It is HIGHLY recommended that you have the game disc available during an Internet, LAN, or Modem game. SETTINGS: Manually changing your golfer settings during a game may cause your player to start gameplay from the incorrect tees. ----------------- Pro swing ----------------- Pro swing is a new swing option that allows you to get the "feel" of an actual golf swing. This is selectable through the golfer setup menu. To calibrate, follow the instructions in the Information menu. (Note: Pro swing sensitivity is effected by Mouse speed settings in the Windows Control Panel.) Pro swing power is dependent on the ratio of mouse speed of the "backswing" in relation to the forward swing. To begin, left click on the swing meter and move your mouse in any direction to begin the backswing. Take the speed at which you move the mouse into consideration. Next, move your mouse in the opposite direction to begin the forward swing. To ensure a precise shot, the swing should be about 3 times as fast as the backswing. To generate "overswing" double-click on the swing meter before starting the mouse movement. The key to Pro swing is practice, practice, practice. Click on the Swing Meter with the right mouse button to take practice swings. ------------------- Fast Play addendum: ------------------- During the course of a game that has Fast Play set to ON, you may find that you would like to save or view a replay of your last shot which can only be done from the post shot menu. To do so, simply click the left or right mouse buttons, or hit any key on your keyboard before your ball comes to rest during your shot. The post shot menu appropriate for your game mode will appear once your ball comes to rest. In Fast Play, if you hit a ball into a water hazard, the game will automatically "Drop" the ball for you. In standard play, you are given the choice to "Rehit" or "Drop". ------------------ Internet Play ------------------ To ensure a smooth transition to the Internet Net Games screens and beyond, we recommend you connect to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) before you start Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf. Most ISPs on the market will disconnect the user from their service if they detect no activity after a specified amount of time. As the data that Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf sends across the Internet is relatively small, some ISPs may interpret this as "no activity". To help ensure you aren't disconnected, try the following suggestion. 1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and double click the Internet icon. 2. Select the Connection tab (or for some people the AutoDial tab) and either un-check the "Disconnect if idle for..." line, or increase the idle time to the maximum of 59 minutes. If The Microsoft Network is your ISP, you can maximize the idle time like this: When you first connect to MSN, and are looking at the white window where you can click to access your email, etc., click on 'View' from the menu, and select Options' from the pull down menu. On the 'General' tab, you can extend the idle time to 59 minutes (the maximum allowed). If you do not already have an Internet Service Provider, Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf comes with the option to install the AT&T WorldNet® Service software including Netscape Navigator (TM) Internet Browser. Near the end of the installation, you will be prompted to install AT&T WorldNet. Choosing "yes" will create a shortcut that allows you to begin the installation. Double click on the AT&T WorldNet shortcut on the desktop and follow the onscreen instruction to create an Internet account. For more information please see the AT&T WorldNet Service documentation towards the bottom of this Readme file. In the event that a registration number doesn't automatically appear, please use the following: LC291P6A4 This registration number allows you to try the AT&T WorldNet® Service for 1 month Free*. Telephone access charges and other charges and taxes may apply. Other terms and conditions apply. ------------------------------------- To Quit out of an Internet Tournament ------------------------------------- If your on-line opponent strays from the game without first clicking OK, you have the option to quit out of the game by clicking the QUIT button that appears at the bottom left side of your screen. This will take you back to the main menu. ------------------ Modem Play ------------------ NOTE: At the finish of all Modem Play games Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf will automatically send both users back to the Main Menu. At which time, the game will automatically hang-up the modem connection. ------------------------------------------------------------- TCP/IP LAN games and Dial-Up Networking ------------------------------------------------------------- This only applies to those of you who wish to play Local Area Network (LAN) games using TCP/IP and ALSO have Dial-Up Networking enabled. The game may attempt to access your dial-up adapter whenever the LAN button is selected. To avoid this, we suggest disabling your dial-up service for the time being. When you are finished with your LAN game remember to re-enable your dial-up service. Disabling Dial-Up Networking: 1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and double click the "Internet" icon to bring up "Internet Properties". 2. Select the Connection or AutoDial tab (as the case may be). 3. Un-check the box next to the "Connect to the Internet as needed" line. 4. Click the OK button. To re-enable the Dial-Up Networking: 1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and double click the "Internet" icon to bring up "Internet Properties". 2. Select the Connection or AutoDial tab (as the case may be). 3. Check the box next to the "Connect to the Internet as needed" line. 4. Click the OK button. NOTE: Some ISPs do not use Microsoft's Dial-Up Networking. If this is the case, refer to your ISP's documentation on how you may be able to temporarily disable their auto dial-up feature. ---------------------------------------- Multiplayer play addendum: ---------------------------------------- Shot Clock: We recommend that you use the default setting of SHOT CLOCK OFF in any Multiplayer games. Skill Levels: In an effort to even the playing field during multiplayer games, we treat the players skill level a little differently than we do during single player games. Essentially, when a Host creates a game he or she will determine what level (Novice, Amateur, or Pro) all players in that game will have to play at. So, if an "Amateur" player wishes to participate in a tournament set to Pro, he or she will have to deal with a faster and less forgiving swing meter. (For more information on golfer levels go to the CREATE GOLFER section of the manual.) --------------------------- Microphone sound --------------------------- Do your playing partners complain that your microphone recordings during net games are too quiet? Here are some things you can do that may help. 1. Go into the "Volume Controls" by double-clicking on the speaker icon in the Windows® 95/98 tray (on the right of the task bar). 2. Go to the Options pull down menu and ensure the Advanced Controls line is checked. 3. Go back to Options and select Properties. Select the Recording selection within the "Adjust volume for" section (ensure the Microphone selection is selected in the lower window) and select Okay. 4. Left-Click on the "Options" menu and make sure the "Advanced Controls" option has a check. Left-Click on the "Advanced" button under the Microphone column and an Advanced Controls for Microphone window should pop up. Place a check next to "Microphone Gain Control" and then Left-Click on "Close". 5. Ensure the Microphone Level is turned up. Note: If you try to send a microphone message at the same time your opponent is recording or sending you a message, you may hear multiple copies of your opponent's message on your system. ------------------------------------------- Tiger Tunes - Sound Advice: ------------------------------------------- Microphone Levels: If you are using the Tiger Tunes feature of Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf and audio from your CD is being heard along with your microphone recordings during net games, do the following: 1. Go into the "Volume Controls" by double-clicking on the speaker icon in the Windows® 95/98 tray (on the right of the task bar). 2. Click on "options" and select "properties." 3. Set "Adjust volume for" to "Recording," then click OK. 4. Make sure the only slider that a check mark in the "Select" box is the microphone. When Tiger Tunes are played from the Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf CD without audio commentary from the game installed on the hard drive, the Tiger Tune being played is interrupted whenever the CD is accessed for game audio files. To fix this, install all game sounds onto the hard drive. Also, volume control for Tiger Tunes is controlled by the Windows operating system. To adjust volume, right-click on the speaker icon on the Windows desktop and choose "Open Volume Controls." Raise/lower volume by moving the CD Audio dial up or down. Audio CD / Commentary Levels: If you have both Music and Commentary ON and your CD Audio is much louder than your Commentary or vice versa, do the following: 1. Go into the "Volume Controls" by double-clicking on the speaker icon in the Windows® 95/98 tray (on the right of the task bar). 2. Adjust the "Volume", "Wave", and / or "CD" volume sliders to adjust the settings to your liking. 3. Left-click the close box to exit the "Volume Controls". Note: The game CD must be inserted in order to hear Tiger Tunes. Other audio CD's may also be used in-game. However, having your Windows CD running while playing Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf may cause conflicts. For best results, make sure your Windows audio CD is not running in the background before starting the game, and have the audio CD you wish to use inserted before you launch the game. The product will only play through the Audio CD once, it does not repeat. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Resolution Changes between the desktop and gameplay ------------------------------------------------------------------ During the course of the game, there may be some changes in desktop resolution that can cause some minor distortions on the screen during transitions. These are temporary and will not affect gameplay or your permanent desktop settings. The desktop may also appear momentarily while switching resolution. It is not recommended that you attempt to access any other programs or begin other tasks while this resolution shift is occurring. ----------------------------------- Microsoft PowerToys Users: ----------------------------------- Autoplay extender may crash the game in the front end menu. If the user opens the CD drive door and closes it again with either the game CD or a music CD inserted in the tray with the Autoplay Extender PowerToy from Microsoft installed, the game will lock up if the in game music setting is turned on. The Autoplay Extender and PowerToys are not intended for use with Tiger Woods 99 PGA TOUR Golf and unsupported. For more information check Microsoft's website: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/contents/powertoys/w95cdautoplay/default.asp Hardware Sleep mode: If Windows initializes hardware sleep mode while the game is running it may make the game look "frozen." To prevent this, turn off sleep mode while playing the game.
