Top Gun : Hornet's Nest (TM) Readme File 11/16/98 -------------------- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS -------------------- 166 MHz Pentium compatible or faster Windows 95 or Windows 98 DirectX version 6.0 (included on the CD) 32 Mb RAM Quad-speed (4x) CD-ROM drive Super VGA graphics with 2 Mb of Video RAM DirectX-compatible sound card Hard drive with 200 Mb free, plus 75 Mb for a swap file Mouse Keyboard Note that the 75 Mb of free space for the swap file must be free after the installation is complete. This swap space must be available on the same hard drive as your operating system is installed (usually drive C). RECOMMENDED SYSTEM -------------------- 200 MHz Pentium compatible or faster 32 Mb RAM 8-speed (8x) CD-ROM drive 3D Graphics Accelerator (support listed below) Joystick Hard drive with 300 Mb free For best play, check the boxes to install the Required Files, AVI Videos, and the Sound Files -------------------- 3D ACCELERATORS -------------------- Supported 3-D graphics accelerators include: * 3Dfx Voodoo * 3Dfx Voodoo 2 * 3Dfx Voodoo Rush * 3Dfx Banshee * Permedia 2 * Matrox G200 * Intel i740 * Nvidea Riva128 * Nvidea TNT * PowerVR Other 3D accelerators might operate properly, but to data we have only tested the cards listed. We strongly recommend that you have the manufacturer's drivers installed rather than generic 3DFX drivers. You might experience color problems with Voodoo2 cards during multiplayer play if you use generic drivers. * Some older video cards are not fully compliant with DirectX 6.0. * Some S3 Virge cards will have problems running in 320 x 240 mode. * We have also found that with the Matrox MGA Ultima/Impression 2 Mb, the game will allow you to select 1024 x 768 software mode. This card does not support that resolution, and if you select it, the game will have to be reinstalled, as it will lock when attempting to reload the menu. If you play the game and your PC locks up or the graphics on the screen are corrupted, you most likely are using an unsupported 3D accelerator card. To fix this, restart the game, click on the Configure menu, then the Audio/Visual menu, and change the driver to "Software". -------------------- KNOWN ISSUES -------------------- 1) If you enter the "Configure" screen from the opening menu and select Reset, this alters the default settings from SIMULATION to ARCADE. Your settings will switch from: Skill: Captain to Ace Speed: Normal to Fast Chaff/Flares: Manual to Auto Gear: Manual to Auto Default View: Cockpit to External 2) Installation Note: On some Windows 98 systems, setup may experience fatal errors and exit when you use the Browse button to select a folder other than the default. This is due to Novell Network software being present and clashing with Install Shield. Please either use the default directory, manually type the new directory, or disable the Novell network software. 3) The manual states that in Multiplayer Configuration, you can set the maximum number of players to 2, 4, or 8. This is not the case. You can choose any number from 2 to 8. 4) When defining controls in the Configure menu, you can use the right mouse button to delete any selection made. 5) The manual states that you can set the Armor option to "Normal". This has been changed to "Medium". 6) The manual states that Unlimited ordance allows you to have unlimited Chaff and Flares. This is not the case. You have only the standard loadout of countermeasures. 7) Due to problems with certain 3D accelerators, you cannot use [Alt]+[Tab] to switch between applications while running the game in hardware acceleration mode. This feature is fully functional when running the game in software mode. 8) The game might not run properly if your hard drive uses the MS-DOS compatibility mode file system. Microsoft suggests that this mode might slow down access to that drive and that you should contact the hardware manufacturer to see if an updated driver is available for your drive. To find out if your hard drive uses the MS-DOS compatibility mode file system: * Select Start->Settings->Control Panel. * Double-click on System (to select it). * Select the Performance tab. * On that panel, a message tells you if a drive is using the compatibility system. 9) This game was tested on a wide variety of hardware. However, some anomalies can occur while running Top Gun: Hornet's Nest on non-Intel(tm) Pentium processors. Also, using a non-certified DirectX(tm) driver might prevent the game from running in full screen mode. -------------------- AUTOPLAY FUNCTIONALITY -------------------- Like the majority of games these days, Top Gun: Hornet's Nest features an Autoplay option to make installation easier. The game also gives you the option of playing your own music CDs during the game. If you plan to take advantage of this feature, we strongly recommend that you install the AVI files onto your hard drive. This should prevent interruption of or by the program when you switch CD's during the game. Note also that you can prevent the autoplay of a CD by holding down the [Shift] key when you insert the disc. -------------------- MULTIPLAYER CONNECTIONS -------------------- TCPIP -------------------- Click the Cycle button until the connection box says "TCPIP Connection". Then click the Connect button. If you want to host a game, simply click "New Session". If you want to join a session, either type in the IP address of the host (if you know it) or leave the address blank, then click the button to the right. The game will search for sessions. You can cancel the search process by clicking the button to the right of the IP address box again. Click Disconnect at any time to select a new connection type. Modem-Modem: -------------------- Click the connection Cycle button until the connection box says "Modem Connection". Then click the Connection button. To host a new game, simply click New Session.
