More Fun With UNO(TM) CD-ROM UNO CD-ROM is played much like the traditional card game but with some very cool new features. Instead of playing only on a table, you can play on the moon or in a circus or on a "broadway" stage. Are you up to the challenge with new special cards Spy, Shark and Mutant? Play against computer characters or your friends over a network. Ready to Play? Let's go! UNO in Brief Each player is dealt 7 cards with the remaining cards placed face down to form a Draw pile. Play begins in a clockwise direction unless a REVERSE card is turned over first. Description of the REVERSE card can be found on page 15. The first player has to match the card in the Discard pile either by number, color or word. For example, if the top card of the Draw pile is a red 7, the following player must throw down a red card or any color 7 by clicking the cursor over the appropriate card in their hand. Or the player can throw down a WILD card (Descriptions of WILD cards can be found on page 16.). If the player doesn't have anything to match, they must pick a card from the Draw pile by clicking on it. If they can play what is drawn they must click again on the card to play it, otherwise play moves to the next person. Players may choose not to play a playable card from their hand. If so, the player must draw from the Draw pile by clicking on it. If the draw pile is exhausted during play, the discard pile is automatically shuffled. You will see a small shuffle animation above the Discard pile as well as the word "SHUFFLE" flashing on the Status Panel located in the bottom right corner of the screen. When a player is about to discard their second to last card, they must click the CALL UNO button or be subject to a potential challenge/penality. For more details reference the Challenge/Penalites description below. Once a player has no cards left, the hand is over. Points are scored and play starts over again. Challenges (and Penalty Descriptions) "Challenges" in UNO CD-ROM are performed by clicking on the player's hand you wish to challenge. UNO Challenges and Penalties A player who forgets to click on the UNO Call button before playing their second-to-last card is subject to a Challenge from the other players. If caught (i.e. challenged successfully) the offending player must pick up two cards from the Draw pile. Players may not be caught for failure to click on the UNO Call button until their second-to-last card touches the Discard pile. They may also not be caught for failure to click on the UNO Call button after the next player in sequence begins their turn. "Beginning a turn" is defined as either drawing a card from the Draw pile or drawing a card from your hand to play. If the last card played in a hand is a DRAW TWO, WILD DRAW 4 or the SHARK card, the next player must draw the two or four cards respectively. These cards are counted when the points are totaled. If no player is out of cards by the time the Draw pile is depleted, the deck is reshuffled and play continues. WILD DRAW 4 Challenges and Penalities If a particular player discards a WILD DRAW 4 card "illegally", they can be challenged. An illegal WILD DRAW 4 play happens when the discarding player holds a matching color to one that's on the discard pile, yet still chooses to discard the WILD DRAW 4 instead of the matching color card. For example, let's say it is Player 1's turn and she has two "yellow #9" cards in her hand and a WILD DRAW 4 card. The card currently showing up in the discard pile is a "yellow #4." If Player 1 chooses to play (discard) the WILD DRAW 4 card and not one of her "yellow #9" cards, she has played the WILD DRAW 4 card "illegally" and can be challenged. If the WILD DRAW 4 card has been played illegally and the offending player challenged successfully, there is a four card pick up penalty. If, however, the WILD DRAW 4 card has been correctly played, it is the challenger that must draw 2 cards in addition to the 4 they were going to have to pick up anyways. The challenge can only be made by the player who is required to pick up the 4 cards after the WILD DRAW 4 card is laid. Choosing a Game To begin playing UNO CD-ROM, you need to select Setup New Game from the Main menu. From here you can select the Rules option to select the type of game you want to play. Original UNO To be the first to score 500 points. Note, in UNO CD-ROM it does not have to be 500 points. The player can select both points and round limits. Points are scored by getting rid of all cards in your hand before your opponent(s) get rid of theirs. You score points for cards left in your opponents' hands. Challenge UNO In this game, the players keep score of how many points they are caught with at the end of a round. As players reach a designated total set from the Rules screen (default 500), they are eliminated from the game. When only two players are left, they play head to head. The winner of that hand is declared winner of the game. Team UNO Like Original UNO, but with a team member. Four players are required for this game, however one player can play with three computer opponents. Players are separated into two pairs, the RED team and the BLUE team. When either partner goes out, the points for both players in the opposing team are added up and awarded to the team which wins. Screen Display 1. Opponent Status Display 2. Draw Pile 3. It also notifies you of challenges (successful and unsuccessful) and displays "UNO" when you call UNO by pressing the UNO button. 11. Score Indicator - Displays your score at the end of the previous round. Special Cards A very colorful and animated cast, these "little winners" were born to perform for you. Let's meet the stars of the show: SKIP - A jester at heart, he jumps for joy when on stage. Play this card and the next player is "skipped" and loses their turn. The card may only be played on a matching color or on another SKIP card. If a SKIP card is turned up at the beginning of play the player to the left of the dealer is "skipped" hence the player to the left of that player commences play. In a two player game, the person playing a SKIP card can immediately play another card. REVERSE - A ballerina with as many emotions as dance moves. This card simply reverses direction of play. Play to the left changes direction to the right, and vice versa. Just like SKIP, in a two player game, the person playing a REVERSE card can immediately play another card. This card can only be played on matching colors and other REVERSE cards. If this card is turned up at the beginning of play the dealer plays first then play moves to the right instead of the left. DRAW TWO - The star of a Broadway Musical, with a white top hat, gloves and a cane. When this card is played, the next person to play must draw two cards and lose their turn. If turned up at the beginning of play, the next player after the dealer must pick two cards and then the following player starts. This card can only be played on matching colors and other DRAW TWO cards. WILD - Dressed in a wicked hat and cloak, she loves to fly on her broomstick. A WILD card can be played at any time - even if the player has another playable card in the hand. The person playing this card selects any color to continue the play. A new color can be chosen from the Color Selector located below the Call UNO button. In a case where a WILD card is turned over at the beginning of play, the person to the left of the dealer determines the color which continues play. WILD DRAW 4 - Dressed like a cowboy in chaps, spurs, belt and bandoliers, the WILD DRAW 4 card is a real mean piece of work. Not only does the player get to call the next color played, but also the next player has to pick 4 cards and forfeit her turn! Note: If you play a WILD DRAW 4 but have a card in your hand that matches the color of the card previously discarded, then you are subject to a challenge from your opponent. (For more details see Challenge/Penalties section on page 10.). New Special Cards We also have some new additions. Let's meet some of our new stars! (a.k.a. New Special Cards): SPY - Engaged in covert operations, he is suspicious of everyone and enjoys carrying out surveillance on other cards. As long as you have this card in your hand, other players won't be able to see how many cards you hold. SHARK - Always on the quest to find something to eat, he finds other cards particularly tasty. When you play this card, a random number of players are skipped before a victim is selected and a four-card penalty is applied. Watch out, this card has no discretion; even the person playing this card might get bitten! MUTANT - Stomps around with arms out-stretched, never knowing what will happen next. This card is similar to a WILD card. It mutates into a randomly selected card of any color when played. Can only be played on a card of its own color. Scoring Cards left in player's hands at the end of a round, are worth the following amount of points: Card Points All number cards (0-9) Face Value Draw 2 20 Reverse 20 Skip 20 Wild 50 Wild Draw 4 50 Spy 75 Shark 50 Mutant 20 Keyboard and Mouse Controls Use the mouse to move the cursor around the screen. The arrow keys can be used to make selections on the menu screen. Use the Left Mouse button to click on items. Key Commands Space Bar - Plays a card. Enter - Draws a card from the Draw Pile. Once the card has been drawn and is displayed above the Draw Pile, pressing Enter again will place it into your hand. To play the drawn card, press the Space Bar. Esc - Pause the game and return to the Main Menu. U - Call UNO. 1 - Challenge the player to your left. 2 - Challenge the player opposite you. 3 - Challenge the player to your right. R - Select red suit color. G - Select green suit color. B - Select blue suit color. Y - Select yellow suit color. Credits Senior Producer Susan G.
