This ReadMe file contains: Installation Instructions Playing Instructions Troubleshooting Tips How to Contact Technical Support ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Installation process: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- For Windowsâ 3.1, 3.11, or Windowsâ for Workgroups: 1. In the program manager, go to FILE and RUN. 2. In the command line, type D:\setup where D: is the CD-ROM drive. 3. Press OK. If this does not work, try typing D:\win16\setup16 in the command line. Windowsâ 95 When you insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive, the autorun feature will give you the option to install. Click Setup and follow the on-screen instructions. If the Autorun doesn't appear, Select RUN from the START button. In the command line, type D:\setup where D: is the CD-ROM drive. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Playing Instructions: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- To play Word MunchersTM Deluxe: 1. You can choose to play the game with Troggles or "Troggle-free." In the Troggle-free game you won't have to avoid Troggles. The only way your Troggle-free game will end is if you eat the wrong answers. When you're playing with Troggles, there are two ways you can lose: by eating the wrong answers or by being eaten by a Troggle. But Cookie will help you by dropping a cookie on the checkerboard for you. When you eat the cookie, you will become invincible and can walk through the Troggles without being eaten -- but invincibility only lasts for a short time. 2. Choose a topic and then click on the boxes to select or deselect the skills you'd like to practice. Select a grade level on the right side of the book. Choose to see the facts in order of difficulty or in random order. Press OK to play. 3. Choose a skill category. Classification (Only grades 1 and 2) Grammar Phonics Vocabulary Sentences Challenge After you have chosen your category you must select a grade. Classification is only available in grades 1 and 2; all other skills are available in grades 1 - 5. After selecting your grade there are sub-categories you can choose from. For example, in classification grade 1 there are 4 sub-categories Color Shape Design Class You can use all of the sub-categories, or just a few by taking the X mark out of the boxes. After you've selected your categories, click on the button at the bottom of the page to play IN ORDER or RANDOM. This button will toggle between IN ORDER and RANDOM. 4. To move the Muncher with the mouse, click on a target and the Muncher will move there. (Hint: When using the mouse, the Muncher will always move to the left or right before moving up or down.) Click on the target again and the Muncher will eat the target. (Hint: If you hold the mouse button down on a target, the commentators will speak the word.) You may also move the Muncher with the arrow keys or the number pad. (Hint: If you use the number pad, the Num Lock button can't be on.) When you get over a target you want to munch, press the space bar. To hear the commentators speak the word, press the A key. The type of targets to munch will be listed at the top of the screen (e.g., red things, begin with b sound, Goldilocks ate lunch with a ____, etc.). 5. Munch a correct answer to earn points and try to get in the Hall of Fame. Choose a wrong answer or cross paths with a Troggle, and you lose your Muncher. To avoid the Troggles, press the X key to jump over them (Hint: Hold the X key down while the Troggle is around and the Troggle won't be able to eat you.), move to a "safe zone," or eat a Muncher Treat to become "invincible." 6. The pause button lets you take time out. Please Make sure the "Word Munchers Deluxe" CD is in the drive and that the CD is clean." appears when I start the program. A: Make sure the Word Munchers CD is in the CD-ROM drive. A: Clean the CD by wiping the shiny side carefully with a dry, soft cloth. A: The file WMPDISK.PIC may be missing or damaged. First try to reinstall Word MunchersTM. If this doesn't work, you can manually copy the file WMPDISK.PIC from the root of the Word MunchersTM Deluxe CD into the folder where you have installed Word MunchersTM. Q: The error "Cannot Initialize Sound Drivers" appears when I start the program. A: Make sure you have a sound card properly installed in your computer. Word MunchersTM Deluxe requires a sound card. A: Clean the CD by wiping the shiny side carefully with a dry, soft cloth. A: The file WMSDISK.SND may be missing or damaged. First try to reinstall Word Munchers. If this doesn't work, you can manually copy the file WMSDISK.SND from the root of the Word MunchersTM Deluxe CD into the folder where you have installed Word Munchers. A: Other sounds may be conflicting with Word MunchersTM Deluxe. Disable other programs that may be running in the background. Make sure no other programs are trying to play sounds. e.g. Desktop programs To disable system sounds in Windows 3.x: 1) Open the Control Panels 2) Open Sound icon 3) Remove the "X" from the box next to "Enable System Sounds" 4) Click OK and close the Control Panels 5) If this still doesn't work, try attaching the sound "NONE" to each system sound. This is done in the Sound Control Panel. To disable system sounds in Windows 95: 1) Open Settings / Control Panels from the START button 2) Open Sounds icon 3) Attach the sound (NONE) to all events 4) Click APPLY then OK and close the Control Panels Q: Program freezes during the first movie (Muncher eating popcorn and reading a book) or freezes when the Muncher is falling onto the checkerboard screen. A: Check your video drivers. Windows 3.1x : If you have Cirrus Logic video drivers GD5422/24 or GD5426/28, make sure you have version 1.43 or greater of the Cirrus Logic video drivers. Earlier versions will not work with Word Munchers Deluxe. Q: I can't install it! A: First, check the CD (the shiny side with no printing on it). Hold it up to a light and check for scratches or other marks that would affect it. If you can see the mark, the laser can, too! Clean the CD GENTLY with a soft, lint-free cloth, or put it under some running water to try and loosen any debris. Call MECC Customer Support within the first 90 days of purchase if you feel you need a new CD. Q: How much stuff does the installer put on my hard drive? A: There are three types of installations. The recommended installation takes 13 MB space on your hard drive; the medium installation takes 1.5 MB of space on your hard drive; the minimum installation takes up 500 KB on your hard drive. The recommended installation provides the best performance, should also help with sound problems. Q: I may need to remove Word Munchers from my machine sometime in the future. What is the installer putting on my hard drive? A: If you are using Windows 3.1, 3.11, or Windows for Workgroups: Directory: C:\MECC\WMuncher WMUNCH16.EXE application WMuncher.mms WMPDISK.PIC WMSDISK.SND DIB.DRV DELSL1.ISU Directory: C:\windows Wmuncher.ini If you are using Windows 95: To remove Word MunchersTM Deluxe from your hard drive, double-click on My Computer, and then open the Control Panels folder. In the Control Panels folder, there will be a panel called Add/Remove programs. Select Word MunchersTM Deluxe from the list that appears in this panel, and hit the ADD/REMOVE button then follow the prompts. If you need to manually delete Word MunchersTM Deluxe from Windows 95, these are the files: Directory: C:\Program files\mecc\wmuncher WMUNCHER.EXE application WMuncher.mms WMPDISK.PIC WMSDISK.SND DIB.DRV DELSL1.ISU Directory: C:\windows Wmuncher.ini Q: As I was playing Word MunchersTM Deluxe, all of a sudden the screen froze / the machine crashed. A: Make sure you have enough RAM available. First, we do not guarantee our products to run with RAM-doubling software. If you are using it, disable it and try running the game without it. Second, make sure that you have no other applications running, such as word processors and screen savers. Third, turn off "Third-party shells" such as KidDesk, Navigator, TabWorks, and Acer Explorer. Certain configurations have problems with memory, particularly if you have Windows for Workgroups on a 4MB machine. If your machine does not have the minimum requirements as listed above, we cannot guarantee this product will run. You may also want to make sure that you have a permanent swap file created; refer to the Windows user's manual for more information. NOTE: DO NOT create a permanent swap file on a compressed hard drive. Bad things will happen! Q: The sound is really choppy. A: Make sure that you have a Windows-compatible sound card with the most recent version of the sound driver. Call your computer manufacturer or sound card manufacturer to see if you have the most recent version. A: Make sure that you have installed Word MunchersTM Deluxe and are running it from the hard drive, this may help sound also. Q: My picture is too small / displays goofy colors. A: The ideal resolution/color setting for Word MunchersTM Deluxe is 640x480x256 colors. If the video driver you are using supports fewer than 256 colors, see your computer manual about how to change to a video driver with 256 colors or better. Make sure that you have the most updated version of the driver for your video card as well. Call your computer manufacturer or video card manufacturer for details. ------------------------------------------------------------------- How to Contact Technical Support ------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I'm still stuck!
