Introduction
WELCOME

Welcome to Barney Secret of the Rainbow from Nova
Development. This is a fun, entertaining, interactive way
for your child to learn new skills by playing with Barney
and his friends.
This program is recommended for children from 2–4
years old, but older children will enjoy this, too! With
this program, young children can learn social and
problem-solving skills and improve critical thinking and
coordination. They can also learn shapes, colors,
numbers, and music.
This program includes animations, video clips from
Barney & Friends TV series, and interactive activities at
two different levels.

THEME

•

Level 1 has less complex verbal instructions and
simple activities. This level is appropriate to start
with — particularly for younger children.

•

Level 2 has more complex verbal instructions and
activities. This level is appropriate for older
children, children with advanced verbal and motor
skills, and children who have completed Level 1
successfully.

Barney and his friends are preparing for a music festival
in a park. There is a colorful rainbow with colors that
transfer to nearby trees during a storm. As the child clicks
a tree, he or she has activities to complete, which return
that color to the rainbow.

STARTING A
GAME

6

When the program starts the first time, you (or your
child) selects a game level.

There are two levels available:
•

Level 1 activities, in general, involve pressing
arbitrary keys on the keyboard. Some activities
involve moving the mouse.

•

Level 2 activities, in general, involve moving and
clicking the mouse and possibly dragging objects.

After you (or your child) clicks a level, the Secret of the
Rainbow animation begins and then ends with a scene
with colored trees.

By clicking each tree, the child plays activities such as:
•

Red tree: Clear and set a table.

•

Blue tree: Make invitations (and posters).

•

Green tree: Blow up (and capture) balloons.

•

Yellow tree: Play dress up.

•

Orange tree: Dance (and play music).

•

Purple tree: Clean up the park.

The activities in parentheses are in Level 2.

7

After the child completes the activities for a color, that
color is added back into the rainbow and a video clip
from the Barney & Friends TV series plays.
In addition to clicking the colored trees, there are two
buttons on the Colored Trees screen that appear in the
lower-left corner.

RE-VIEWING
VIDEO

8

•

Click the TV button to re-view the beginning
animation and video clips that have played already
during this session.

•

Click the Exit button to select a different level or
to quit the program.

If the child clicks the TV button on the Colored Trees
screen, he or she can re-view videos from the Barney &
Friends TV series that have played already and view the
beginning animation.

When the child completes all activities, all video
segments and the ending animation become available for
re-viewing.
Each TV is colored for the rainbow color related to that
video segment. Click a TV icon to re-view an animation
or a video segment.

Note: A video segment plays and becomes available
after the child has completed the activities for that color.

On the Video screen there are two buttons in the lowerleft corner of the screen.

•

Click the rainbow to return to the Colored Trees
screen to start another group of activities.

•

Click the Exit flag to change to a different level, to
restart the game at the same level, or to quit the
program.

Note: If the child changes to a different level or starts a
new game, the Video screen is reset. This screen only
shows the main animation(s) and the videos that have
been viewed in the current session.

CHANGING
LEVELS

On any screen with an Exit flag icon, the child can
change to a different level, restart the game at the current
level or quit the program.

9

•

Click New Game to view the Game Level screen
to change the level or to restart the current game.

•

Click Continue to return to the Colored Trees
screen for the current game and not reset any
completed activities.

Additionally, in the lower-left corner the child can click
the Bye button to quit the program.

Clicking the screen during an animation forces the
animation to end and to the start of an activity.

PRINTING
ACTIVITIES

There are certain activities in both levels where a child
can print a completed activity.
These activities include:
•

Printing posters and invitations. (Blue tree)

•

Printing posters of Barney and friends in costumes.
(Yellow tree)

It is best for an adult or older child to go through the
printing process for the young child.
On most screens where something can be printed, a
Printer icon appears at the bottom-right corner of the

10

screen. For printing invitations in Level 2, the icon
appears in the toolbar on the left side of the screen.

To print the current item:

DOING LEVEL 2
ACTIVITIES

1.

Click the Printer icon.

2.

With Mac OS X, if a Page Setup dialog box
appears, adjust settings as needed, and click OK.

3.

Adjust the settings in the Print dialog box as
needed.

4.

Click Print.

In Level 1 when a child completes an activity, the
program automatically moves to the next activity, but in
Level 2 the child can at times click a Move On arrow.
This icon may appear when the child completes the
minimum number of tasks within an activity.

The ‘Create Invitations’ activity for Level 2 is a little
more complex than most other activities. It has a toolbar
on the left side:
•

Click the Stamp icon to add a colorful stamp to
the invitations. Select a stamp design from the
icons across the top of the screen and then click, as
needed, on the invitation.
