Introduction
Overview
You are Beowulf, legendary Norse warrior with the strength of 30 men – arrogant,
carnal, self-serving, and lustful for gold and glory. You journey to Denmark to
destroy a bloodthirsty beast that is wreaking havoc on the frigid land. But evil
persists, and you succumb to its promise of easy power, propelling yourself onto
the Danish throne. As King, you must face the monstrous consequences of your
actions…lead your Thanes into battle, crush your enemies, and slay the Titans of a
dying age that threaten to annihilate your kingdom.
Only then, when you look your destiny in the eye, will you know for sure just
what kind of hero you truly are…Monster Slayer or Hero King?

Characters
Beowulf
Beowulf is a young and arrogant Norse warrior
who seeks to prove to his peers and to himself
that he is the stuff of heroes.
For honour and glory, he braves stormy seas
with his Thanes to succour the Danish King
Hrothgar, whose lands have been devastated by
the monster Grendel for the past 11 winters.
For more than 50 years, Beowulf will pursue his
heroic, yet tragic destiny, vacillating between
his carnal and destructive instincts and the
temptations of easy power on the one hand,
and the heavy responsibilities of a King with
the promise of honour and the adulation of his
people on the other.

3

King Hrothgar
Hrothgar is the Danes’ king when Beowulf first
appears at Herot. He needs rescuing from the evil
Grendel, a monster that terrorises his kingdom
and people.
He treats Beowulf as if he were his own kin,
kindly giving him advice and taking care of
his men.
But Hrothgar also covers up a terrible secret that
seems to have brought shame and terror upon
himself and his kingdom.

Wiglaf
Wiglaf is Beowulf’s closest friend and most loyal
ally. Wiglaf reveres Beowulf and would follow
him to the ends of the earth.
Empathetic, loyal to a fault, lighthearted,
and comical, Wiglaf is the symbol of loyalty,
friendship, and commitment; he will be
Beowulf’s technical guide and captain of the
Thanes.

The Thanes
The Thanes are Beowulf’s faithful companions
and fierce warriors. Their number will vary from
a single combat group to a full unit. From
Geatland to Herot, the Thanes will help Beowulf,
defeating his enemies by fighting on his side and
performing Thanes’ Actions.
Thanes come in phalanxes of three men, but
Beowulf can split or regroup them, according
to his priorities.
The Thanes are the people who are closest to
Beowulf and they will dynamically react to their
King's actions.

Playing the Game
Herot

The Danish castle of Herot will serve as the hub of the game. The player will
view the status of his kingdom, get feedback on Beowulf’s Legacy, and access
all the major management features via the hub. There are five different hub
environments the player can interact with within Herot:

The Mead Hall:
The Mead hall is the grand dining room that offers an overall view of the people of
Herot. It’s the starting point from which you will navigate to all other hub pages.

Wiglaf's Tactics Table:
Here, the player can manage his Thanes and upgrade them.

Unferth and Cain’s Corner:
By talking to Unferth, the player can buy Carnal upgrades.

The Bedchamber:
Here, Beowulf can view his Legacy and interact with Queen Wealthow.

The Balcony:
Here, the player will interact with Wulfgar, who will guide the player to the
overview of the entire kingdom, where Beowulf will choose his next destination.

6

In-Game Interface

Heroic Gauge: Acts as a life bar for Beowulf. The player can also choose to
spend some health points to trigger a boost for Beowulf and his men. Note that
Beowulf’s life bar capacity grows, according to the number of Thanes available.
Thanes’ Slot: Indicates the number of Thanes available and their life status
(alive, boosted, or dead). It also reveals your Thanes’ progress when they perform
specific tasks (Thanes’ Actions, etc.) with a temporary icon.
Carnal Gauge: Indicates the level of Carnal Power. At max, you can trigger
Beowulf’s Carnal Fury.
Weapon Status: Changes to red when a weapon is about to break.
Heroic Event: Indicates when a Heroic Event can be triggered by pressing
the Heroic Event Camera when an eye icon appears at the top right of the screen.

7

Weapons and Objects
As Beowulf, you havehas access to a vast gallery of
weapons throughout the game.
The player can switch to a new weapon by pressing the
Interact key to pick up a weapon from the floor.
The player can also find weapon racks in certain hidden
areas. Press and toggle Grab/Climb to pull a weapon from
a rack.
Similar to real Viking weapons, all in-game weaponry is
graded, which is why it often breaks. Weapons are even
more prone to breaking when Beowulf turns Carnal and
inflicts more damage to his enemies. The player is thus
forced to constantly improvise during battles, by picking
new weapons up and mastering them, in order to survive.
Each weapon category (one-handed, two-handed, shield,
etc.) has its own unique set of characteristics (damage, speed, combos, etc.) and is
more efficient battling a specific category of enemy.

Bare Hands:
With the strength of 30 men, even an unarmed Beowulf is lethal to many of the
creatures of the Dark Ages. But beware: In most of the situations you encounter,
your fists alone will not suffice. Picking up – or better, stealing – weapons from
your enemies is necessary for your survival…

One-Handed Weapons
(Sword, Axe, Pike, etc.):
Light and manoeuvrable, one-handed weapons allow a fast and precise series
of hits. One-handed weapons can be paired with a shield, and can unlock new
tactical possibilities, such as the parry.

Shield:
The shield is one of Beowulf’s weapons of choice. Shields are necessary to parry
efficiently (by pressing the Locked Strafe key) and to launch effective
counter-attacks. Shields can be used alone or combined with one-handed weapons.

Two-Handed Weapons
(Warhammer, Troll’s Axe, Spear, etc.):
Slower but deadlier, two-handed weapons are ideal to deliver blows to groups
of enemies.

8

Legendary Weapons:
More resistant and inflicting greater damages, legendary weapons can be found in
hidden areas or when defeating your most powerful enemies.

Objects:
Beowulf can improvise by using many objects as weapons. From pillars to
stalagmites and even boulders, there are various objects he can pick up and use as a
weapon, though some can only be used during an episode of Carnal Fury.

Moves
Switch on the tutorial option in the Options Menu to get in-game information
about all the basic and skilled moves in the game.

Skilled Moves
Skilled moves are key to mastering the game because, when combined with an
attack, they allow the player to fill Beowulf’s Heroic Gauge up.
Lock: Press + hold the Locked Strafe key
Lock puts Beowulf in a defensive stance that will allow him to A) lock an enemy
and B) automatically parry.
Strafe: Lock + Direction key + Interact key
Strafe allows Beowulf to swiftly approach and safely turn around an enemy to find
his weak spot.
Dodge: Strafe when attacked
When an enemy is trying to hit you, use the Strafe move and Beowulf will Dodge.
The Dodge move is key to landing a strike on an enemy that has a shield.
Roll: Direction + Interact Key
Beowulf can perform a Roll that helps him quickly reach a distant enemy and/or
escape from melee combat.
Attack: Using different Skilled Moves + Attack scores Heroic Points:
• Dodge + Attack: A dodge move followed by a Light Attack or Finish Attack
will score Heroic Points.
• Roll + Attack: A roll move followed by a Light Attack or Finish Attack will
score Heroic Points.
• Strafe + Attack: A Strafe move followed by a Light Attack or Finish Attack
will score Heroic Points.

9

Heroic Attacks and Heroic Finishes:
Beowulf’s combat system uses a combination of Light Attacks and Finish Attacks.
Depending on the sequencing, Beowulf will trigger different Heroic Finishes.
Heroic Finishes build the Heroic Gauge up.
All Heroic Attacks and Heroic Finishes are listed in the game’s combo book,
available in the Pause menu.
Note: The weapon category will influence the type of Heroic Attacks and Heroic
Finishes you can perform.

Grab and Grab Finishes:
The Grab is Beowulf’s most brutal, barbaric, and Carnal combat action.
Grab an enemy by pressing Grab/Climb when at close range.
Once grabbed, win the struggle and finish your enemy off by bashing one of the
buttons appearing on screen:
Interact: Steal Weapon (if no weapon, Beowulf releases his enemy)
Grab/Climb: Weaken
Light Attack: Throw
Finish Attack: Crush
Note that all Grab moves score Beowulf Carnal Points and turn his legacy toward
the Monster Slayer.
When in Carnal Fury mode (press and hold the Carnal Fury button), Beowulf will
add even more deadly extra finishing moves.

Carnal Gauge and Carnal Fury:
Beowulf collects Carnal Points when he receives hits, and during Grabs.
Beowulf can also load the gauge by pressing and holding the Carnal Fury button.
The more Carnal Points you have, the easier it becomes to trigger Beowulf’s Carnal
Fury.
Carnal Fury is Beowulf’s berserker mode. Trigger it by pressing the Carnal Fury
button when the Carnal Gauge is full.
It is a special state that temporarily unleashes Beowulf’s carnal impulses. It’s
characterised by Beowulf’s invulnerability and the extra damage he inflicts, while
fighting.
These advantages are counter-balanced by an altered perception, the possibility of
killing Beowulf’s own men, and the carnal-stun effects that make Beowulf very
vulnerable when his Carnal Fury finishes.
Using Carnal Fury turns Beowulf’s legacy toward the Monster Slayer.

10

Heroism, Thanes, and the Heroic Gauge
The Thanes are Beowulf’s warriors.
They would follow him to the end of the world, if he asked. In return, they rely
on their war chief to support and help them in all critical situations.
Heroism makes both you and your Thanes more powerful during combat and
more efficient during tasks. Heroic Actions generate a blue aura around you and
your men.
Also note that Heroism and health are closely linked. Each circle above your
Heroic Gauge represents one of your Thanes. As your Heroism increases, your
health increases too. Additionally, as your Health increases, more Thanes also
become Heroic.
Fighting with skills is the most effective way of increasing your Heroism. Learn
to use Heroic Attacks and always end them with a right mouse click for a Heroic
Finish to increase your Heroic Gauge. Hitting multiple enemies with a Heroic
Finish builds Heroism even more quickly!
The Heroic Gauge can also be increased by performing the following skilled
combat moves:
• Counter-attack: Dodge + Attack
• Roll + Attack
• Strafe + Attack
Taking damage instantly decreases your Heroism, so always attack and defend
during combat.
The Heroic Gauge is also filled up when Beowulf performs Heroic Events, such as
saving a Thane’s life.

Thanes and the
Heroic Command Interface
The Thanes are Beowulf’s special warriors; he can give them specific orders
through the Heroic Command Interface.
It becomes available when pressing the Command Interface button, and allows
you to give contextual orders to your men (Regroup/Take an action/Boost).
The Orders available will be displayed on-screen, according to the situation and
the interaction possible.

11

Thanes Command Interface

Several Thanes’ Actions can be performed simultaneously, and the Thanes can be
split into phalanxes, composed of three people (with a maximum of four groups).
Orders available:
Heroic Booster: Gives a morale boost to your men, making them more
efficient on the battlefield. It also triggers the Viking Storm, when available.
Combo Boost (when available): Makes Beowulf and his men perform
specific Actions, such as triggering mechanisms.
Thane Assign: Adds an additional group of three Thanes to the selected
Thanes’ Action.
Thane Unassign: Removes a group of three Thanes from the selected
Thanes’ Action.
