Introduction
2190 AD. On a routine exploration mission, science vessel FMM UV discovered a
planet with suitable climate for human kind. During the initial scouting
expedition this young planet, code named FMM UV-32, was declared inhospitable
for colony life due to its unstable terrain and immense population of prehistoric
reptiles. News of this amazing planet spread and articles on the “Dinosaur
Planet” lead an earth corporation to purchase the rights to the planet, and create
DinoHunt Corp. DinoHunt created the unique opportunity for paying customers
to become dinosaur hunters for the first time in 50 million years.
You are the newest client of DinoHunt Corp.
Installation
Insert the CD into the drive.
instructions on your screen.
The program will automatically launch.
Follow
If Autorun is disabled, click the START button, then RUN. Type d:\Setup (where
D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive). Follow installation instructions on your
screen.
DirectX 6 is required, and will be installed unless you choose not to. We
recommend installing DirectX 6 unless you are an advanced user who already
knows DirectX 6 is installed and running properly. Be sure to restart your
computer after the installation of DirectX 6.
Running Carnivores
Click on START > PROGRAMS > CARNIVORES, and then on either the
CARNIVORES icon, or the *CARNIVORES3DFX icon. This will bring you into the
Main Menu.
*Note: You may only run CARNIVORES 3Dfx if you have a 3Dfx compatible video
card.
Main Menu
At the start of a new game, you are prompted to register a new hunter or
continue with a saved hunter. If you have played before, simply click on the
saved hunter’s name and you will enter the game. New registrants must agree
to the DinoCorp waiver or you will be returned to the desktop.

Beginning the Hunt
Scoring: Each dinosaur represents a set number of points. A beginning hunter
starts with zero points and gains the ability to hunt new dinosaurs on additional
terrains, with a more powerful weapon, as their points increase. A hunter will
become Advanced after earning 100 points, and Expert with 300.
Beginning the Hunt: Select the HUNT option from the Main Menu. You are now
given a variety of choices for your hunt. The first is the LOCATION. Click on
the arrows to choose where you wish to hunt.
Next, you will see that there are a wide variety of dinosaurs to hunt. Simply
click on the arrows to make your choice of dinosaurs to hunt. A new hunter will
be given the choice of Parasaurolophus, the Stegosaurus, the
Pachycephalosaurus, and the dangerous Allosaurus. An advanced hunter gains
the ability to hunt the Triceratops and the Velociraptor. The expert hunter gets
to hunt the ultimate, Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Click NEXT to advance to the next screen.
Here you can use the buttons to choose your accessories. The weapons can be
set for kill or tranquilise, simply click on the arrows to choose. The weapons
include the shotgun and the Xbow for the beginning hunters, adding the Sniper
Rifle in for the advanced and expert hunters. Choose any accessories you might
wish to use, by clicking on the appropriate icons.
When you have made your choices, click START to begin the hunt.
Suggestion: First time hunters may wish to use the Observation Mode to
familiarise themselves with dinosaur behaviour and different terrain.
Note: Keep in mind that regardless of which dinosaur you choose to hunt, there
are others living on the islands that do not appear on your radar. You may be
hunting a Stegosaurus and be surprised by a Velociraptor !
Choosing your location
Each location is unique with varying difficulties and terrain. The new hunter will
be given three choices, with two or more added for the advanced hunter, and a
final area for the expert hunter, for a total of six locations.
Area 1:
The Woods of Turan Choks
Experience: Novice
A mild climate and good range of sight make this a great beginner’s map. This
was the first island explored on the new planet. Turan Choks, named for the
captain of the science vessel to discover the planet, is a hilly wooded area
populated by a variety of dinosaurs.
Area 2:
Basmachee Rocks
Experience: Novice
This map is a good challenge for beginning hunters. The exact origin this island
remains a mystery. Its unique topography of deserts, mountains, and lakes
makes for a challenging area to hunt in. High hills can be a great place to perch
in wait, or hide a dinosaur from sight.
Area 3:
The Jungles of Gravitsappa
Experience: Novice
A fantastic area for beginning hunters. Lava filled cracks show prior seismic
activity on this island. The tropical jungles on the rest of the island are teeming
with dinosaurs, hiding in the ground mists or around the rolling hills.
Area 4:
The Ancient Temple
Experience: Advanced
With only a small temple as a safe zone, this is a map for advanced hunters.
The temple, located in the centre of the island remains one of the biggest
mysteries on the planet. Hieroglyphs on the wall indicate a worship of the
Velociraptor, calling the beast “fast as the wind, with teeth sharper than any
blade”.
Area 5:
The Pyramids of Shmu-Hadron
Experience: Advanced
This is a map for experienced hunters. These Pyramids in the desert terrain of
this area were built by a long-gone race, and their use remains unknown. These
structures are ideal for hunting and hiding.
Area 6:
The Great Lake
Experience: Expert
For expert hunters only! Surrounded by an impossible wall of mountains, this is
the most difficult terrain to hunt on the planet. The giant meteor-made lake in
the centre is the only obstacle on this barren, desolate island.
Choosing your Dinosaur
Here you can decide which dinosaur you wish to hunt by using the arrows to
scroll back and forth.
The Herbivorous (plant eating) Dinosaurs
Parasaurolophus: This is a good dinosaur for the beginning hunter. This
duckbilled plant eater has a striking head crest that can reach up to 6 feet
(1.8metres) long, making it very easy to spot. This herbivore has an average
sense of sight, and average sense of smell, and an excellent sense of hearing.
The target-zones on this specimen are the head, neck and back areas.
Pachycephalosaurus: This is a good dinosaur for the beginning hunter. The
name means “thick headed lizard”, and it comes from its 25cm thick skull
rimmed with knobby spikes used defensively against other dinosaurs as a
battering ram. This amazing plant eater has an average sense of sight, a low
sense of smell, and an average sense of hearing. The target-zones on this
specimen are the neck, and back areas.
Stegosaurus: This is a good dinosaur for the beginning hunter. This is an easy
dinosaur to recognise due to the giant plates protruding from their backs, in two
staggered rows and spikes on the end of his tail. This bus-sized herbivore,
weighing up to six tonnes has an average sense of sight, a low sense of smell,
and an average sense of hearing. The target-zone on this specimen is the head
area.
Triceratops: This is a dinosaur for advanced hunters. Meaning “three-horned
face”, this is another dinosaurs that is very easy to spot. As big as an elephant,
the short nose horn and two long hollow horns sticking out from above the eyes
can make this dinosaur a dangerous animal when wounded. This plant eater has
an average sense of sight, a low sense of smell, and an average sense of
hearing. The target-zones on this specimen are the neck, back and eye areas,
as well as the left side of the heart.
The Carnivorous (meat-eating) Dinosaurs
Allosaurus: This is a good carnivore for the beginning hunter to try, but beware,
it will attack you at close range. A dangerous dinosaur indeed, this saw-toothed
meat eater with its immense expandable jaws and claw bearing toes is a
challenge to hunt. This muscular dinosaur has an average sense of sight, an
excellent sense of smell, and a low sense of hearing. The target-zones on this
specimen are the head, neck and back areas.
Velociraptor: This is a dinosaur for advanced hunters. This ferocious fanged
dinosaur is an agile hunter. Using its retractable sickle shaped claw on its
second toe as its primary weapon, used to slash open the bellies of its prey, this
meat eater is a challenge to all hunters. This dinosaur has an average sense of
sight, an excellent sense of smell, and an average sense of hearing. The targetzones on this specimen are the head, neck and back areas.
Tyrannosaurus Rex: For expert hunters only!
Possibly the most feared of all dinosaurs, this monster was two stories tall, with
razor sharp teeth in its enormous jaws. It is an extremely aggressive carnivore
that will eat anything in its sight. Shooting this dinosaur anywhere but the
targeted eye are will only make it more aggressive, so be careful of this
dangerous beast. It has excellent sight, excellent scent, and excellent hearing.
The target-zone on this specimen is only in the eye area.
Choosing your Weapon
Shotgun: The target area for this weapon is the centre of the sighting circle.
Although powerful, aim your shot well. The shotgun will scare plant eaters,
causing them to scatter, but the noise will alert carnivores, which can be
dangerous for you. There are 6 shots in the shotgun, and any hunter can use it.
The X-Bow: This weapon has two target areas, called aiming pins. The top pin is
sighted in for 40 metres, and the bottom pin is sighted for 80 metres. This
weapon is relatively silent, and can be shot several times without alerting
dinosaurs, but the complex aiming takes some practice. There are 8 shots in the
X-Bow and any hunter can use it.
Sniper Rifle: This weapon is very accurate, and will shoot exactly where the
crosshairs are placed. Its range goes as far as the binoculars, but is extremely
narrow. This is not a weapon for a charging meat eater, but fantastic for
distance shots. Holding six shots, this weapon is for advanced and expert
hunters only.
Hunting Accessories
Points are deducted from your hunt with the use of certain items. To use any
item, simply click on the icon in the menu. A lighted icon denotes that it is in use
for the hunt.
Radar: This allows you to view the dinosaur locations on the map during your
hunt. A dinosaur is depicted on the map as a green dot. Your location is shown
as the red dot with a green circle surrounding it. Please note that the map show
only the dinosaurs you are hunting. All other dinosaurs are masked. Use of the
map deducts 30% from your total points acquired during that hunt.
Cover scent: This item allows you to mask your scent from all dinosaurs reducing
the likelihood of you being spotted. Use of the Cover Scent deducts 20% from
your total points scored acquired during that hunt.
Camouflage: This special suit decreases the dinousaur’s ability to detect you
through sight. Use of the camouflage deducts 15% from your total points
acquired during that hunt.
Tranquiliser: Tranquilising a dinousaur is an alternative to killing it. This will drop
the dinosaurs where it stands with a quick-acting drug. Use of the Tranquiliser
increases 25% of your total points acquired during that hunt, but you are unable
to include a tranquilised dinosaur in your trophy room.
Binoculars: There are no points deducted for the use of the binoculars in the
hunt. Press the “B” key to use the binoculars and then again, to put them away.
With this item, you can see just outside of your normal viewable range, and
centering the crosshairs on a dinosaur will show you the animal’s size.
Map: The map allows you to pinpoint your location on any island. There are no
points deducted from your score for using it. Press the TAB key to call the map
into view, and press it again to remove. The map is used with the radar, as
stated above to point out locations of the dinosaurs.
Dinosaur Call: This item is used to use the dinosaur’s native calls, to attract the
animals. There are no points deducted for using the dinosaur call. Press the
ALT key to use the call. The call, when overused, can scare plant eaters, or
attract meat eaters to your location, so be careful.
Wind Indicator and Compass: These items are standard for a hunter, and do not
deduct points from your score. The wind Indicator shows wind direction with an
arrow, and the length of the arrow denotes the force of the wind. The compass
shows the direction that you are facing on top of the device. These items can be
toggled into and out of use with the CAPS LOCK key.

Suggestions for a successful hunt:
1. Move into the wind, so the dinosaurs will not catch the human odour. For
herbivores, you can spook your prey, while carnivores will start hunting you.
2. Use the dinosaur call, to attract your prey to your location, and move to cover
to make the kill. A high spot usually makes the best spot to perch after you
have made a call from the valley below.
3. Beginning hunters should use the additional equipment until you feel
comfortable with your hunting skills. While some points may be lost, learning
the dinosaur actions can be a lifesaver later in your career.
4. Use different methods of movement. If you need to run, don’t use it all the
time, and run in short bursts. Crouching and moving slowly makes less noise
and will not startle the dinosaurs.
5. Use your surroundings. Climb hills and use the binoculars to get a good view
of the valleys below. Crouch in fog, or move around obstacles to flank your
prey from upwind of them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Windows Troubleshooting
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you can't find any animals to shoot, or can't hit the animals that
you're shooting at, please remember that Carnivores is a true hunting simulation, in spite
of it's science-fiction setting. In order to find and kill animals, you will have to follow
several basic rules.
"The screen just turns black or quits back to Windows when I try to run
Carnivores"
There are several methods that you can try to fix this problem:
1. Shut down any other applications that you may have running on your
system such as screen savers, virus scanners, etc.
2. If you are using a fast machine such as a Pentium 233 or faster, you
may need to turn down video hardware acceleration. See the section
below on "Turning down Windows' video hardware acceleration".
3. Try resetting your computer's video resolution to 640x480 with 256
colors.
4. Update your video card drivers.
"The game freezes or locks up while playing"
Windows video hardware acceleration may need to be turned down if the game you
are playing uses some other form of acceleration, such as DirectX.
Turning down Windows' video hardware acceleration:
1. Right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop
2. Click on the Performance tab
3. Click on Graphics
4. Move the slider bar one notch to the left
5. Click on OK
6. Click on OK once more to exit the system properties panel.
Now try your game. If you still have problems, repeat this process until the game
works, or you can't turn acceleration down any further.
If you have video hardware acceleration turned all the way down, and the game still
won't run, you may need to turn off DirectX acceleration instead.
Error Messages
"Cannot locate ddraw.dll" error:
Carnivores requires DirectX version 6, which is automatically installed to your
computer when you install the game. If for any reason you chose NOT to install
DirectX 6 when you installed Carnivores, you will need to manually install DirectX 6
now,
or
the
game
will
report
this
error.
Installing DirectX 6 manually:
1.
Insert the Carnivores CD into your drive
2.
Double click on the "My Computer" icon
3.
Right click on your CD-ROM drive
4.
Left-click on "open"
5.
Double-click on the "DirectX" folder
6.
Double click on "Dxsetup.exe"
7.
Click on "Install DirectX", or if you have a previous version loaded,
click on "Re-install DirectX"
8.
If you are asked at any time during the installation to overwrite your
existing drivers, ignore the warnings and click on "yes"
9.
When installation is complete, restart your computer
10. Try your game again.
If you are absolutely sure that DirectX version 6 is already installed on your
computer, then you may need to update your video hardware drivers in order for
the game to work.
"This Program has performed an Illegal Operation and will be shut down"
These errors occur when Windows encounters a problem that it can't fix. Quite often,
the problem is the result of a conflict between the game and some other program
that you have running on your computer. The best solution is to shut down any other
applications that you may have running before you play Carnivores.
If you are using a Dell P2 400mhz computer and this error occurs when you exit the
game, you probably will not be able to play Carnivores again until you reboot your
computer. We are working with Dell to resolve this problem.
Installation Problems
Following are some of the problems that can occur while installing Carnivores, and the
recommended solutions for each.
"Nothing happens when I insert the Carnivores CD into my CD-ROM drive"
The Windows '95 AutoPlay feature may be turned off on your computer. If you wish
to bring up the game without enabling AutoPlay, you can start the setup process
manually by double clicking on the "My Computer" icon on your Windows desktop,
then on your CD-ROM drive icon, then on "SETUP.EXE". If a CD-ROM icon does not
appear when you open the "My Computer" icon, or if clicking on SETUP.exe doesn't
start your game either, then your CD-ROM drive may be in "MS-DOS compatibility
mode".
"The Installer starts to copy files, but then just quits to the desktop"
Make sure that you have enough hard drive space available on your system before
installing. If you don't have at least 85 Megabytes free, the game can't install.
If you have enough space, check the shiny underside of the CD for fingerprints,
smudges, scratches, or anything else that may cause your drive to have trouble
reading it.
If the CD looks clean and undamaged, then your CD-ROM drive may be running in
"MS-DOS Compatibility Mode".
"I deleted the Carnivores folder and now I can't re-install the game"
When you delete the game folder without properly uninstalling it, many game files
remain on your hard drive. Because of this, the launcher program on the CD thinks
that the game is still there, and does not give you the option to install.
You must run the Setup program manually like this:
Double click the My Computer icon on your windows desktop.
1. Right click the Carnivores icon.
2. Click open.
3. Double-click the Setup.exe icon
The game will now install. If you wish to delete the game again in the future, be sure
to use the game's uninstall program or the Add/Remove programs icon in your
Windows Control Panel.
Video Problems
Following are some of the video display problems that can occur in Carnivores, and the
recommended solutions for each.
"I've installed Carnivores with DirectX 6, and now my computer's video
display is all messed up!"
This problem indicates that DirectX could not find a suitable driver for your video
card. If the video display is so bad that you cannot see anything in Windows, you'll
need to reboot your system in "Safe Mode" first. Then, uninstall the DirectX video
driver to restore your system to its original configuration.
"I'm using a Voodoo Rush or Banshee card, and the animation is really
choppy."
We have noticed that these Voodoo cards do not run properly with Carnivores,
resulting in choppy animation. If you have one of these cards, first make sure that
you have the latest drivers from the manufacturer. If that does not solve the
problem, use the Carnivores patch located in the “patch” directory on the Carnivores
CD, or download on our website at www.wizworks.com.
"I'm using a non-Voodoo 3D Accelerator card, and I want to be able to use the
3D Acceleration feature."
There is a new patch available to allow non-Voodoo cards to take advantage of 3D
acceleration in Carnivores. This patch is available for in the “patch” directory on the
Carnivores CD, or download from our website at www.wizworks.com.
"I started the game and my Carnivores picture is larger than my computer
screen!"
This problem occurs when the program was unable to adjust your screen size itself.
You will need to exit the game and change your screen size to 800 x 600 with 256
colours.
Sound Problems
The Yamaha DS-XG
This sound card can sometimes have problems with Carnivores, and is usually because of
uncertified sound card drivers. You will need to update the sound card drivers.
There are no other known problems with sounds in Carnivores. If you don't hear any
sound, chances are that you just need to turn up the volume knob on your speakers, or
by using the Windows volume control panel. To use the Windows volume controls, just
double click on the little yellow speaker icon on your taskbar.
If you are sure that your volume controls are already turned up, then make sure that you
don't have any other programs running that may be using the sound card.
Finally, make sure that you have installed DirectX version 6 from the Carnivores CD. This
is done automatically when you install the game unless you turn off the option to do so.
If you did not install DirectX version 6, you will need to do so now.
General Troubleshooting
Following are some of the other problems that can occur in Carnivores, and the
recommended solutions for each.
"The game runs too slowly"
A good way to improve speed is to obtain the latest drivers for your video card.
Video card manufacturers are constantly improving the software drivers that run
their video cards to fix problems and improve performance. If you have not updated
your drivers recently, a newer, faster driver is probably available.
"How do I update my drivers?"
We recommend that you update both sound and video drivers, as this is good
general maintenance for your computer… sort of like getting an oil change in your
car.
To update your drivers, contact the manufacturers of your sound and video cards.
Generally speaking, major card manufacturers will be available on the Internet, or
can be contacted by phone. Check your card's documentation for details. Most
patches are free downloads.
"I'm having a problem that was not mentioned in this document"
Make sure that your system meets the minimum system requirements as listed on the
box. The minimum system requirements for Carnivores are:

An IBM PC or 100% compatible computer
•
a Pentium 150mhz processor
•
Windows 95 or 98
•
16 MB of RAM
•
85 MB of available hard disk space
•
A CD-ROM drive
•
A mouse
•
A 100% DirectX compatible video card
•
A 100% DirectX compatible sound card
The following system configuration is ideal for running Carnivores at its best:
•
A Pentium 200 or faster computer
•
32 MB of RAM
•
A 3D accelerator card.
If your system does not meet or exceed the minimum requirements, it will run
poorly, or not at all.
1. Shut down all other programs that you may have running on your system prior to
playing Carnivores. Other programs can interfere with the operation of the game.
2. Make sure you have plenty of room left you your hard drive, or windows may not
have enough room for a swap file. This can cause some very strange problems.
3. Make sure that the CD itself is not dirty or damaged in any way. If the CD is dirty, it
can be cleaned. Most computer stores carry inexpensive CD-ROM cleaning kits that
will safely restore your CD. If you want to try cleaning the CD without a kit, you can
wash the CD using lukewarm water, MILD NON-ABRASIVE dish soap, and a very soft
and clean COTTON cloth. Do NOT use any kind of paper product or abrasive soap to
clean the CD, as these WILL scratch! Once the CD is clean, be sure to let the CD dry
completely before inserting it into your CD-ROM, or damage may result.
4. Try uninstalling, and then re-installing the game.
