skills! Choose a case file, then earn mystery clues by solving I SPY riddles and searching for
carefully concealed objects. Use your problem solving skills to gather clues and solve the cases
of Locked Gate, Pirate’s Map, Midnight Mouse, and many more clever mysteries.
I SPY Mystery is inspired by the book I SPY Mystery, by Jean Marzollo and Walter Wick.

Check the System Requirements below to make sure your computer is compatible with I SPY
Mystery. If your system meets these requirements and you are still experiencing difficulty
installing or using the software, please refer to the Troubleshooting section of this manual.

Installing I SPY Mystery
Windows: 1. Insert the I SPY Mystery CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. 2. When the I SPY
Mystery start-up screen appears, click Install. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions for
installation.
Note: If the start-up screen does not appear (you may have AutoPlay disabled), double-click the
My Computer icon on your computer's desktop, and then double-click the I SPY Mystery
CD-ROM icon in the My Computer window. Double-click the Mystery Setup application to
install I SPY Mystery. For Windows XP users, the My Computer icon is located in the Start
menu.
Macintosh: 1. Insert the I SPY Mystery CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

Note: On Macintosh OS 9 the I SPY Mystery start-up screen may appear when you insert the
CD-ROM. When the I SPY Mystery start-up screen appears, click Install. If the start-up
screen does not appear, follow the Mac OS X instructions.
Launching I SPY Mystery
Windows:
1. Insert the I SPY Mystery CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and wait for the start-up
to appear.
2. Click Play.

Note: If the start-up screen does not appear, click the Start menu, choose Programs, and then
select I SPY Mystery from the Scholastic's I SPY Mystery menu. I SPY Mystery can also be
launched using the I SPY Mystery shortcut, which can be placed on your computer's desktop
during installation.
Macintosh:
1. Insert the I SPY Mystery CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and wait for the start-up
to appear.
2. Click Play.

Note: On Macintosh OS X the start-up screen may not appear when the CD-ROM is placed in
the CD-ROM drive. If the start-up screen does not appear, double-click the I SPY Mystery icon,
which is placed on your computer’s desktop during the installation. I SPY Mystery can also be
launched using the I SPY Mystery icon within the I SPY Mystery folder on your computer.
Getting Started
Sign in by typing your name on the line. If you have played the game before, pick your name
from the list. Click GO! on the blue light bulb or press ENTER/RETURN on your keyboard to
begin. When you enter your name, the program will automatically save your game. To delete a
name from the list, click the name, then press CONTROL + D.

Spread about the detective’s desk are thirteen case files, which represent mysteries you’ll solve
during the course of the game. Just click on the name of the mystery you’d like to play to get
started.
1. Click the QUIT button to exit the program. Your game will automatically be saved. 2. Click
on any file folder to start a mystery. 3. Click for help with the menu screen. 4. Click to view
game credits.
I SPY Picture Riddles
Each mystery case file contains 3–6 I SPY riddles. No two riddles look alike, but they all are
played the same way.
How to Solve I SPY riddles Listen to the riddle and hunt for the objects listed. Once you find
an object, click it and the word in the riddle will turn a different color. Click the headphones to
hear the whole riddle again. Click any word or phrase in the riddle to hear it read aloud.
1. Click individual words to hear them read aloud. 2. Click to hear the riddle. 3. Click for
help. 4. Click the object when you find it. 5. Click to return to the previous screen.
Mystery File
How to solve a mystery Once you’ve solved all the riddles in a mystery and returned to the
case file, a mystery clue will appear at the bottom of the screen.
Each mystery clue is specific to the case at hand and will require you to do some super-sleuthing
in the riddles you’ve just solved.
There are a few different ways to solve the I SPY Mystery riddles. Some mysteries will require
you to find clues leading to a single object. Others will challenge you to collect objects from
multiple riddle screens, or follow a series of sequential clues.
If you get stuck at any point during the game, click the HELP button for guidance.
Special Cursor Features
In some of the riddles you will use a special cursor tool to observe and find riddle objects.
Binoculars You’ll use binoculars in the Overlook riddle (in Mystery of the Pirate’s Map). The
binoculars function as a cursor to help you find hidden objects. When you locate an object, just
click!
The Magnifying Glass In the Butterfly riddle (in Mystery of the Broken Machine) and the
Museum display case (in Mystery of the King’s Crown), the magnifying glass cursor allows you
to see objects more closely. Use it to find each object, then click.
Microscope In the Microscope riddle (in Mystery of the Scientist’s Code), use the microscope
to help see the objects more clearly. Click on 1X, 5X, or 10X to increase or decrease the
magnification of the objects.
Mysteries
Mystery of the Broken Machine
Mystery of the Broken Machine contains six I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY
riddles to earn your mystery clue.
A bunch of parts are missing from this mystery machine. Can you find them?
Solution: Find the missing pieces of the machine that are indicated in green on the machine plan
screen. Once you’ve found each missing part and returned it to its correct place on the machine,
press GO to see what this machine does!
Hint: Use the machine plan riddle screen to figure out where each part goes.
Mystery of the Fisherman’s Catch
Mystery of the Fisherman’s Catch contains four I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I
SPY riddles to earn your mystery clue.
In this mystery, pay careful attention to clues presented on the riddle screens to figure out which
fish the fisherman is trying to catch.
Solution: Pay special attention to the packaging of the bait in the tackle box. When you think
you’ve got it, find that fish, and the mystery is solved!
Mystery of the Four Letters
Mystery of the Four Letters contains four I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY
riddles to earn your mystery clue.
In this mystery, your challenge is to identify the mysterious creature described in a series of
hand-written notes.
Solution: You will find one letter on each riddle screen. Click on each one to open it and have
it read aloud. Try to figure out what mysterious creature the letters are describing. Find the
creature to solve the mystery.
Mystery of the King’s Crown
Mystery of the King’s Crown contains four I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY
riddles to earn your mystery clue.
In this mystery, you must find and return all of the jewels that are missing from the King’s
crown.
Solution: Search this mystery’s riddle screens to find the five missing jewels. When you find
the jewels, figure out how to use them to restore the crown to its original glory.
Mystery of Knight Fall
Mystery of Knight Fall contains four I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY riddles to
earn your mystery clue.
In this mystery you are asked to figure out which knight is about to fall off the castle wall.
Solution: There are knights on three of the four riddle screens in this mystery, but only one fits
the clue’s description. Look closely at all of the screens to find him!
Mystery of the Locked Gate
Mystery of the Locked Gate contains three I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY
riddles to earn your mystery clue.
The challenge in this mystery is to figure out how to open the locked gate in the castle’s
dungeon.
Solution: The Key Cabinet screen holds a clue to the correct key-turning sequence. Start your
investigation there. Once you’ve figured out the correct sequence, return to the Dungeon and try
it. A big surprise awaits those who solve this mystery and unlock the gate.
Mystery of the Midnight Mouse
Mystery of the Midnight Mouse contains four I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY
riddles to earn your mystery clue.
In this mystery, you’ll follow a sneaky mouse through a series of riddles to find out where it
spends the night.
Solution: As the mouse moves from riddle to riddle, watch the time to figure out where he
settles down for the night.
Mystery of the Missing Art
Mystery of the Missing Art contains five I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY
riddles to earn your mystery clue.
Can you find the missing painting? That’s your challenge in this mystery.
Solution: To solve this mystery, you’ll need to find a series of paintings on multiple riddle
screens. Start by finding the frame with your name. From there, follow the clues that
mysteriously present themselves until you’ve cracked this case!
Mystery Meal
Mystery of the Mystery Meal contains four I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY
riddles to earn your mystery clue.
In this mystery you’re figuring out what’s cooking in the creepy kitchen.

Find the ingredients on the riddle screens, then combine all of them to cook up a
Mystery of Old Thunder
Mystery of Old Thunder contains four I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY riddles
to earn your mystery clue.
In this mystery, you’ll go on a scavenger hunt through the riddle screens to figure out what
struck down Old Thunder, a legendary ship.
Solution: Look closely at the painting of Old Thunder for a striking clue to the five items
you’re going to have to find on this mystery’s riddle screens. Once you find the five items, go
back to the painting to watch the story unfold.
Mystery of the Pirate’s Map
Mystery of the Pirate’s Map contains five I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY
riddles to earn your mystery clue.
In this mystery, you’ll follow clues to find a pirate’s hidden treasure.
Solution: Find the missing pieces of the pirate’s map on riddle screens of the case file. Piece
them together and follow the clues to solve this mystery and find the hidden treasure!
Mystery of the Scientist’s Code
Mystery of the Scientist’s Code contains four I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY
riddles to earn your mystery clue.
Use your code-breaking skills to solve this I SPY mystery.
Solution:
The notes that the scientist has written are in secret code. The key to decoding them
is on four silver puzzle-like pieces. Find these pieces on the riddle screens and piece them
together to crack this code and solve the mystery.
Decoding Hint: Each X on the decoder represents four letters of the alphabet. Each part of the X,
along with the pattern of dots and dashes within it, represents a letter. To crack this code, match
each symbol in the scientist’s notebook to the corresponding one on the decoder.
Mystery of the Skeleton’s Books
Mystery of the Skeleton’s Books contains five I SPY riddles in the case file. Complete the I SPY
riddles to earn your mystery clue.
Your task in this mystery is to figure out which book is the skeleton’s favorite.
Solution: The books on the bookshelf are trying to tell you something. They are spelling out a
message, but some of the letters in that message are missing. Find the missing letters on the
riddle screens to complete the message, which will bring you closer to solving this mystery!
Basic Troubleshooting (Windows)
Problem The I SPY Mystery AutoPlay start-up screen does not appear when the I SPY Mystery
CD-ROM is placed in your computer's CD-ROM drive.
Possible Cause: AutoPlay is not enabled on your computer.
Solution:
1. Double-click the My Computer icon on your computer's desktop.
2. Right-click the Mystery CD-ROM icon in the My Computer window.
3. Select Open from the pop-up menu.
4. Double-click the AutoRun application to start I SPY Mystery.
Problem: The I SPY Mystery CD-ROM cannot be seen from Windows Explorer.
Possible Cause: The CD-ROM drivers are not installed properly. (Other CD-ROMs also
cannot be seen from Windows Explorer.)
Solution: In your Start Menu, select "Settings", then "Control Panel". If you are using a
Windows XP computer, the Control Panel can be found right when you open your Start
Menu. Open the Add New Hardware control panel and follow the instructions.
Possible Cause: The I SPY Mystery CD-ROM is scratched or dirty.
Solution: Make sure that the I SPY Mystery CD-ROM surface is free of all fingerprints and
is not scratched.
Problem: I SPY Mystery is running slowly on your computer.
Possible Cause: Other programs are running.
Solution: Quit any other programs running on your computer and re-launch I SPY Mystery.
Possible Cause: The I SPY Mystery CD-ROM is scratched or dirty.
Solution: Make sure that the I SPY Mystery CD-ROM surface is free of all fingerprints and
is not scratched.
Possible Cause: I SPY Mystery is being run from a DVD-ROM drive. (Note that this usually
causes only minor performance problems.)
Solution: If your computer is equipped with both CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives, quit the
program and restart running from your CD-ROM drive.
Problem: You see the message "An attempt to reset your monitor settings to high color (16-bit)
has failed."
Cause: I SPY Mystery requires that your monitor settings be set to High Color (16-bit). An
attempt was made to reset the color depth of your monitor and failed. Some computers
require that these settings be changed manually.
Solution: In your Start Menu, select "Settings", then "Control Panel". If you are using a
Windows XP computer, the Control Panel can be found right when you open your Start
Menu. Open the Display control panel. Select the Settings tab and change the color
palette to High Color (16-bit).
Problem: On opening the Display control panel and choosing the Settings tab, High Color
(16-bit) is not an option under the palette menu.
Cause: On some computers, problems in the video driver software may prevent your monitor
from resetting to High Color (16-bit).
Solution: Contact your computer manufacturer for instructions on getting updated video
drivers.
Problem: You see the message "An attempt to reset your monitor resolution settings to 640x480
has failed."
Cause: I SPY Mystery requires that your monitor resolution settings be set to 640x480. An
attempt was made to reset the color depth of your monitor and failed. Some computers
require that these settings be changed manually.
Solution: In your Start Menu, select "Settings", then "Control Panel". If you are using a
Windows XP computer, the Control Panel can be found right when you open your Start
Menu. Open the Display control panel. Select the Settings tab and change the screen area
setting to 640x480.
Problem: On starting the game, you see the message "Handler not defined.
#INIT_START Script Error. Continue?"
Possible Cause: I SPY Mystery is already open under another user account on your
computer.
Solution: Click No to quit I SPY Mystery. In the Start Menu, click Log Out, and in the
window that pops up, choose Switch Users. Switch to other user accounts which may
be running I SPY Mystery and quit the game. Return to the account you started in and
re-launch the game.
Problem: I SPY Mystery plays in a small window with a large black border.
Possible Cause: I SPY Mystery failed to change your monitor resolution. Some computers
require that these settings be changed manually.
Solution: In your Start Menu, select "Settings", then "Control Panel". If you are using a
Windows XP computer, the Control Panel can be found right when you open your Start
Menu. Open the Display control panel. Select the Settings tab and change the screen area
setting to 640x480.
Possible Cause: You are playing on a laptop computer or a flat panel monitor.
Solution: Some laptop and flat panel monitors are incapable of resizing to 640x480
resolution. This will not affect performance in any other way.
Problem: Audio is not functioning within I SPY Mystery.
Possible Cause: The speaker volume or system volume is turned all the way down.
Solution: Check your speaker volume control as well as the Windows system volume
control.
Possible Cause: Another application is running which is using the sound channel of your
computer.
Solution: Quit all applications on your computer and restart I SPY Mystery. Use the Alt-Tab
keys to cycle through open applications and shut down.
Possible Cause: Your computer is missing a component required for audio playback.
Solution: Double-click the dxsetup.exe file in the DirectX8a directory on the I SPY Mystery
CD-ROM. Proceed through the installation of DirectX.
Possible Cause: Some computers have sound cards that are not completely compatible with
DirectX.
Solution: Many sound and performance problems are fixed by turning off sound
acceleration. To turn off hardware acceleration:
1. Go to Start and select Run from the menu. Type "dxdiag" into the text field and press
Enter.
2. The DirectX Diagnostics window opens.
3. Click the Sound tab.
4. Locate the "Hardware Sound Acceleration Level" slider and drag it all the way to the
left, so that "No acceleration" is shown as the current setting.
5. Click EXIT.
6. Restart I SPY Mystery.
Problem: Audio still does not function correctly within I SPY Mystery after trying all of the
steps above.
Cause: On some computers, problems in the audio driver software may prevent I SPY
Mystery from playing sound correctly.
Solution: Contact your computer manufacturer for instructions on getting updated audio
drivers.
If audio still performs poorly after following all steps listed above, run an application
named "soundfix.exe" located in the support folder of the I SPY Mystery CD-ROM.
Problem: The installation of I SPY Mystery quits or I SPY Mystery fails during the installation.
Possible Cause: You are logged onto your computer without administrative rights.
Solution: Log onto your computer as a user with administrative rights and re-install I SPY
Mystery. (Administrative rights allow users to install software onto their computers.)
Possible Cause: Your computer does not have enough free disk space to install I SPY
Mystery.
Solution: Verify that you have at least 20 MB of free disk space on the computer drive you
are using to install I SPY Mystery.
Basic Troubleshooting (Macintosh)
Problem: The I SPY Mystery CD-ROM cannot be seen when inserted into your Macintosh.
Possible Cause: The I SPY Mystery CD-ROM is scratched or dirty.
Solution: Make sure that the I SPY Mystery CD-ROM surface is free of all fingerprints and
is not scratched.
Problem: You see the message "The application AutoRun could not be opened because
‘InterfaceLib- GetComponentResource’ could not be found."
Possible Cause: Apple QuickTime has been manually removed from the system.
Solution: To correct this error, reinstall QuickTime. The latest version is available from
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ .
Problem: I SPY Mystery is running slowly.
Possible Cause: Other programs are running.
Solution: Quit any other running applications and re-launch I SPY Mystery.
Possible Cause: For Mac Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, Virtual Memory may be off.
Solution: In Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, turn on Virtual Memory using the Memory control
panel. Increase the amount of Virtual Memory used by your computer and restart your
Macintosh.
Possible Cause: For Mac Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, File Sharing is on.
Solution: In Mac Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, open the File Sharing Setup control panel and
turn off File Sharing.
Problem: The installation of I SPY Mystery quits or I SPY Mystery fails during the installation.
Possible Cause: You are logged onto your computer without administrative rights.
Solution: Log onto your computer as a user with administrative rights and re-install I SPY
Mystery. (Administrative rights allow users to install software onto their computers.)
Possible Cause: Your computer does not have enough free disk space to install I SPY
Mystery.

Problem:I SPY Mystery freezes for 10–30 seconds at a time.
Possible Cause: For Mac Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, File Sharing is on.
Solution: In Mac Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, open the File Sharing Setup control panel and
turn off File Sharing.
