Bit-Bot's Math Voyage(tm)
Bit-Bot's Math Voyage is a Windows multimedia program.
As such, there are certain installation requirements that need to
be done before Bit-Bot's Math Voyage will run properly. The
Install Program generally takes care of these requirements, but
sometimes it can not make the necessary modifications. In
addition, some of the items listed here may change as you install
other software or hardware into your system. If you are having
trouble with Bit-Bot's Math Voyage, please read through the
following Issues (I) and solutions (S) before calling Sanctuary
Woods' technical support.
I) I'M HAVING PROBLEMS INSTALLING BIT-BOT'S MATH VOYAGE.
S) Make sure you follow these instructions from within Windows.
Installing Bit-Bot's Math Voyage:
1. Make sure you are in Windows.
2. Insert Bit-Bot's Math Voyage CD into your
CD-ROM drive (usually D.)
3. From the Program Manager select the RUN item from
the FILE menu.
4. Type d:install, where d is your CD-ROM drive letter.
5. Click the "OK" button.
4. Follow the Install instructions on the screen.
Double click on the Bit-Bot's Math Voyage icon from the
Sanctuary Woods Group in the Program Manager to start the game.
I) SOME SOUNDS SEEM TO BE MISSING or THERE ARE NO
SOUNDS AT ALL.
S) Make sure the volume knob on your sound card is turned
up.
S) If you don't hear any sound at all in the submarine, click on
Bit-Bot to test for sound. If you still don't hear anything, or if
you have 6MB or more of RAM and you don't hear
background music, then you may need to change the "MIDI
Mapper" settings. Quit Bit-Bot's Math Voyage and double
click on the "Main" icon in the Windows Program Manager.
Double click on the "Control Panel" icon and then double
click the "MIDI Mapper" icon. Now click on the arrow to the
right of the "Name" field (in "Show Setups" mode) and a list
of MIDI Maps will appear for you to try. These different maps
will vary depending on the sound card you have installed,
but generally a map of type "EXT FM" will work with Bit-
Bot's Math Voyage. You may need to try out other settings as
well.
S) Check sound and music in the "Sound" menu to make sure
it’s on.
S) Some sound cards, such as the Ensoniq Soundscape and
Reveal Sound FX 32, have secondary wave playback device
which must be enabled for all sounds to be heard. Consult
the sound card manual or call Sanctuary Wood Technical
Support for instructions on how to enable secondary wave
playback.
I) THE MUSIC IS LOUDER THAN BIT-BOT'S VOICE AND
THE OTHER SOUND EFFECTS.
S) If your sound card has a mixer or a program that will adjust
different types of sounds, increase the volume of the wave
sounds or decrease the volume of the MIDI.
I) THE SOUND WAS WORKING FINE. THEN, IT STOPPED.
S) Check sound and music in the "Sound" menu to make sure
its on.
S) Your available memory may have changed, or you may need
to restart windows to re-initialize the MIDI driver.
I) THE GAME RUNS SLOWLY or THE SOUNDS AND
PICTURES ARE NOT SYNCHRONIZED.
S) Often this problem is caused by a shortage of available
memory, or a problem with the Virtual Memory file. This
happens most often with systems that have 4 MB of RAM
installed. Turning off the sound and/or music may improve
the program's speed.
I) I HAVE PLENTY OF MEMORY BUT SOMETIMES I GET A
MESSAGE STATING I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MEMORY.
S) Make sure your virtual memory is on and set it to at least
5MB in a permanent swap file.
S) This message may appear if you have installed Bit-Bot's Math
Voyage on a compressed hard drive. Bit-Bot's Math Voyage
should be installed on an uncompressed partition.
I) MY SCREEN TURNS TO BLACK AND WHITE WHEN I
START THE PROGRAM.
S) Don't worry. This is normal. The screen will flash black and
white briefly.
I) WHEN I TRY TO RUN THE PROGRAM, I GET AN ERROR
MESSAGE THAT SAYS "INCORRECT BIT-DEPTH" OR
"NEEDS 256 COLORS."
S) Windows must be running in 256 colors for the program to
work optimally. Check Windows Setup in the Main Program
Group and make sure Display shows a 256 color driver being
used.
I) WHEN I TRY TO RUN THE PROGRAM, I GET AN
"APPLICATION ERROR" AND/OR A GENERAL
PROTECTION FAULT (GPF) MESSAGE
S) This most likely indicates a video driver compatibility
problem, or Windows is not running 256 colors.
Other Troubleshooting Tips:
Bit-Bot's Math Voyage runs best if you have the latest versions of the
Windows video drivers for your system.
If your machine uses the driver 256_1280.drv from 07-93, this driver
is too old. This driver should have a date of at least 03-15-94.
Updated drivers can be obtained from Gateway 2000 technical support
or online from their BBS. Packard Bell also has updated drivers
available. The phone numbers for these companies as well as others
are in the list of companies near the end of this file.
To install a new driver, you will need to exit Windows, make a backup
of your original 256_1280.drv file which is located in your Windows
system directory. Then, copy the new driver to your Windows system
directory.
There are also known conflicts with older versions of the Dell video
drivers. If your system uses Dell video drivers, you can get the
latest versions from the Dell BBS. See the list below for the phone
number of the BBS.
You should have the latest version of your video card's Windows driver.
If you are unsure, use the following table to contact your Video Card
manufacturer or contact your computer vendor.

OWNERS of #9 GXE Video Cards:
A problem has been found with certain versions of the windows video driver
for the #9GXE card. We have provided a copy of the video driver that does
work with this product. Please note that we have even found a problem with
versions NEWER than the video driver included with this product. Therefore we
suggest you follow the procedures below to backup your current version of the
#9GXE video driver and to install the version from this product.
There are two sets of instructions here, one uses a DOS batch file for
a more automatic installation, the other is manual instructions for more
technical users.
Automatic instructions to install the correct video driver for #9GXE:
1) At the DOS prompt (not from within Windows) type the following:
d:9SWITCH BBMV d
Where the two lowercase d's should be the drive letter for your
CD-ROM drive. This is usally D.
If an error message appears, see below for more detailed information
on each of the parameters.
2) When done playing Bit-Bot's Math Voyage you may revert to your
original version of the #9GXE video driver.
At the DOS prompt (not from within Windows) type the following:
d:9SWITCH ORIG d
Where the two lowercase d's should be the drive letter for your
CD-ROM drive. This is usally D.
If an error message appears, see below for more detailed information
on each of the parameters.
Notes on each of the parameters:
The first parameter is BBMV or ORIG depending on if you are
switching to the video driver for Bit-Bot's Math Voyage or
back to your original copy of the video driver.
Use BBMV to switch TO the video driver for Bit-Bot's Math Voyage.
Use ORIG to switch BACK to your original video driver.
The second parameter is the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive.
This letter should not be followed by a colon.
The third parameter is the location of your Windows subdirectory.
This parameter is not required if your Windows subdirectory is
in the standard location of C:\WINDOWS. If Windows is located
somewhere else, you will need to enter the third parameter in the
form: w:\subdirectory
where w is the drive letter where Windows is located and
subdirectory is the subdirectory name where Windows is located.
Manual instructions to install the correct video driver for #9GXE:
1) Before installing the video driver provided with this product
you should make a backup copy of your existing driver. To backup your
existing driver to a blank floppy, insert a disk in drive A:, exit
windows and type the following at the DOS prompt:
copy c:\windows\system\#9gxe.drv a:
2) Now put your Bit-Bot's Math Voyage CD into your CD-ROM drive and
access the CD (usually d:).
3) Type the following to copy the driver on the CD-ROM to your hard drive:
copy d:\drivers\9gxe\9gxe.drv c:\windows\system\#9gxe.drv
where d is the drive letter for your CD-ROM.
If you are running DOS ver 6.2 or later, DOS will give you the
following message:
overwrite c:\windows\system\#9gxe.drv (Yes/No/All)
Type y at this prompt to overwrite the file.
4) Now start windows and have fun playing "Bit-Bot's Math Voyage".
5) Once you are done playing Bit-Bot's Math Voyage you may run your
other programs. If you experience any problems with them, we suggest
that you revert back to your previous #9GXE driver file. You can do
this by copying the #9GXE.drv file from your backup floppy back into
your windows system directory. To do this type the following at the
DOS prompt:
copy a:\#9gxe.drv c:\windows\system
again type y when DOS prompts you to overwrite the file if
running DOS 6.2 or later.
If you do have to revert back, just follow the above procedures each
time you play Bit-Bot's Math Voyage.
If you still have a problem after reviewing these suggestions,
please call our technical support at (415) 286-6110. To expedite
your technical call, please have the following information in
front of you when you call.
1) Your registration number (found on disk number one.)
2) A copy of your CONFIG.SYS file. This file is found usually on
the C: drive at the root.
3) A copy of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This file is found
usually on the C: drive at the root.
4) A copy of your WIN.INI file. This file is usually found in the
windows directory on drive C. (C:\WINDOWS.)
5) A copy of your SYSTEM.INI file. This file is usually found in
the windows directory on drive C. (C:\WINDOWS.)
6) A list of the hardware you are using, including the monitor,
video display card (if known), the sound card (if any), and
how much memory you have in the machine. The easiest
way to determine the amount of memory in the machine is
to run the DOS program MEM if you have DOS 5.0 or later or
CHKDSK if you have an earlier version of DOS. These items
will help technical support answer your questions faster so
that we may be better able to help you.
