*** Installing DEW
1) Insert the Discovering Endangered Wildlife CD in your
CD-ROM drive.
2) Choose FILE, then RUN from the Windows Program Manager
menus. In the "Command Line" box type, D:\setup.exe,
then click OK or press ENTER.
Note: If your CD-ROM drive is not D:, then substitute the
correct drive letter for D: above.

Using Windows File Manager, view the contents of the
CD-ROM drive, double-click setup.exe in the root
directory of the CD.
3) Either method described above will launch the setup
program for Discovering Endangered Wildlife. Once in
the setup program, follow the on-screen instructions.
The setup program will create a directory on your hard disk and
copy program files into it. The setup program will also create an
"Endangered Wildlife" game icon on your desktop.

*** QuickTime for Windows
The setup program will also install QuickTime for Windows on
your system. QuickTime is used to play the movies contained
within (and is required to run) Discovering Endangered Wildlife.
If you already have QuickTime on your system, it will be updated.
Note: If you see any error messages during the setup of QuickTime
for Windows, you may need to make system adjustments (i.e. free up
some hard disk space or close other programs to free up memory),
and then reinstall QuickTime for Windows. You may reinstall Quick
Time for Windows without reinstalling Discovering Endangered
Wildlife by running the SETUP.EXE program located in the QT sub-
directory of the CD.

*** System Configuration Notes
If you experience any difficulties installing or running DEW, you
may wish to scan the notes below as well as those in the
Troubleshooting section of the online "Wildlife User's Guide".
Video ----------------
* If SETUP told you that your video adaptor does not currently
support 256 colors, yet you're sure that it does (or so the ad
for your computer said...), the problem is most likely that the
current video driver loaded by Windows supports only 16 colors.
First, run Windows SETUP and see if there is a 256 driver
available. Windows ships a SVGA 256 color driver that will
work with most video cards. Install the Windows SVGA driver,
restart Windows, then restart the game.
If you couldn't find the Windows SVGA driver, check to see
if your computer or video card came with a diskette which
contains the proper video driver...
If that doesn't work, check CompuServe, AOL, or Prodigy for
drivers...
If that doesn't work (at which point you're probably ready to
throw something... but relax, life's too short...), check with
either (a) the company you bought your computer from; or
(b) the video card manufacturer. One of them should be able to
supply you with the latest drivers.
* If your PC's video card supports more than 256 colors (eg,
32,000 or 64,000), and you wish to use Windows in one of these
video modes, you may need more than 8 MB of memory (RAM) to use
DEW. If you run into problems, try switching your video driver
to it's 256 color mode, which uses less memory.
Audio ----------------
* Discovering Endangered Wildlife uses "Extended Midi" (as opposed
to Basic Midi). Most sound cards sold in the past couple years
are automatically setup for Extended Midi. If you do not hear
any music when you run the program, check the MIDI MAPPER
section of the Windows Control Panel to make sure that Extended
Midi is enabled.
RAM ----------------
* DEW tends to run better when you don't have many other apps
open at the same time. If you fail to hear either midi (music)
or narration, try closing some windows and trying again.
* If pictures mysteriously disappear, it is almost definitely a
low RAM situation (we're pushing a lot of 256 color images
around...). We've found that systems without a permanent swap
file need to have 10 MB of free disk space before you start
Windows in order to provide Windows with enough working storage.
Check in CONTROL panel.
Fonts ----------------
* If you get some strange looking font instead of Lyriq's
Discovery Bold, run CONTROL panel and install Discovery Bold
from the D:\DEW\FONTS directory (assuming that D: is your CD-ROM
drive).

Getting: your videos to run quicker/smoother:
To make your videos run more smoothly (ie. on slow machines), check that
the DEW.INI file in your installation directory contains the line
CPU=1
If you have a faster machines eg. pentium, and wish to view better
quality videos, then set the line to be:
CPU=2
