GoldenGate Readme
=================

This document lists issues that are important to the
successful installation of the game.

    1. Video Cards & Drivers
    2. QuickTime Movies
    3. Video For Windows

====================================================
    1.  Video Cards & Drivers
====================================================

	Your video card and selected video driver
	can be THE most significant factor in the
	performance of the game.

	Most computers DO NOT come with the right
	video driver selected for your system. If
	you have never checked your setup, chances are
	you have a generic SVGA video driver installed.
	Changing it to the right video driver can make
	a difference.

	Golden Gate installs Microsoft's "DirectX"
	which in turn installs some of its own video
	drivers. To do this, DirectX determines the
	kind of video card and installs a compatible
	video driver.

	On most systems this is a seamless process.
	However, we have seen instances where a
	standard display looks worse after the process
	but performs faster. In this case switching
	the driver back to a manufacturer's setting
	can fix the display, but you must explictly
	set the display to 16-bit [High] color before
	starting Golden Gate.

	To change your video output from 8-bit to
	16-bit manually:
	 * Right click on desktop and select Properties
	 * Select the "Settings" tab
	 * Choose "high" color (16-bit)

	We recommend that you use the installed
	DirectX driver whenever possible.

	If you have changed your video driver since
	installing Golden Gate and want to re-install
	the DirectX drivers, go to the Golden Gate CD
	and look in the DirectX2/DirectX folder. Run
	"dxsetup.exe". It will re-install any drivers
	that may have been changed or lost.

====================================================
    2. QuickTime Movies
====================================================

	The version of QuickTime for Windows included on
	the Golden Gate CD is vers. 2.1.2. If you have a more
	recent version already installed, you can probably
	skip this installation step. If you have an earlier
	version, e.g., a 16-bit version, then this will
	install over it (i.e., they will co-exist) and have
	no problems.

	If you experience a hang or crash when playing a
	movie, the QuickTime documentation suggests the
	following:
	 * Open the QuickTime Control Panel
	 * Click "More" button
	 * Click "Video" tab

	QuickTime attempts to use the Video Hardware where
	possible. If this is selected, change it to "Video
	Driver". You may see a performance hit to the
	movies, but this should be a more robust selection.

====================================================
    3.  Video For Windows
====================================================

	On a Pentium, Golden Gate uses Video For Windows
	[already installed on Windows95] for full-screen
	movies.

	We have seen rare instances where previous
	applications have caused crashes, most notably a
	tape backup solution. If you run into a hang or
	crash while viewing full screen movies, you may
	need to reboot your machine and restart the game.

	We hope you enjoy Golden Gate.

	Thank you,
	Ix Entertainment
