NFL(tm) MATH Windows - Read Me File

Thanks for purchasing NFL(tm) Math!
This document contains last-minute information regarding the program and
helpful troubleshooting tips.  If you have a printer connected to your
computer, you may find it convenient to print this file for quick
reference. To do this, refer to your Windows manual for information on
how to use the Print Manager.

To play the game, refer to the user's manual that came with the program.

Getting Started:
Make sure that you have a Windows MCI-compatible sound card and speakers.
The display mode should be set to 256 colors at a resolution of at least
640 x 480 pixels. For more information on changing the display mode,
consult your Windows documentation.  Quit all other programs (except
Windows) before installing or running NFL Math.  Turn off all screen savers.

Installing NFL Math:
1. Make sure you are in Windows.
2. Insert the NFL Math CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
3. Select "Run" from the Program Manager File Menu.
4. Enter d:install (where d is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive) and
then click when you see "OK."
5. After installation, a "Head Coach" Program Group will exist on your
system. In it you will find the NFL Math CD icon. Double-click on this
icon to start the game.

Improving Program Speed:
You can ensure the most efficient performance of the program by following
these recommendations:
1. Don't run other applications while running NFL Math.
2. Turn off Background Printing.
3. Close all other programs, TSRs and turn off any networking software
before starting NFL Math.
4. Choose Standard Install when selecting install type.

Changing your Math Question Level during a game:
You can easily change your Math Level to make it harder or easier during
a game by pressing the F2 key when you are in the stadium with the two
teams at huddle. This will bring up a dialog box that will tell you your
current Math Level and ask you if you want to change it.

If the animations in the Jumbotron play too slowly, you can control their speed by:
Pressing the Shift and 2 key on your computer keyboard (the animations will play
every-other frame and run twice as fast).
Pressing the Shift and 3 key on your computer keyboard (the animations will play
every third frame and run three-times as fast).
Pressing the Shift and 1 key on your computer keyboard (this sets the animations
to play every frame, which is the default).

Troubleshooting Tips:
If you don't hear background music, then you may need to change the
"MIDI Mapper" settings. Quit NFL Math and double-click on the "Main" icon
in the Windows Program Manager. Double-click on the "Control Panel" icon,
and then double-click the "MIDI Mapper" icon. Now click on the arrow to
the right of the "Name" field (in "Show Setups" mode), and a list of MIDI
Maps will appear for you to try. These different maps will vary with the
sound card you have installed, but generally a map of type "EXT FM" will
work with NFL Math. You may need to try out other settings as well.  If
you hear music but no drums and the music sounds funny, go to the MIDI
Mapper as described above but click on the "EDIT" button. Change the DEST
CHANNEL (second column) tenth row down (next to SOURCE CHANNEL 10) from 10
to 16. Click the "OK" button and then the "CLOSE" button.  

If you get a message that says "Unable to load NFL Math font" this is probably because
your system does not have current Windows video drivers. If your machine
uses the driver 256_1280.drv from 07-93 this is too old. This driver
should have a date of at least 03-15-94. Updated drivers can be obtained
from Gateway 2000 technical support or online from their BBS. Packard Bell
also has updated drivers available.

To install a new driver, you will need to exit Windows, make a backup of
your original 256_1280.drv file which is located in your Windows system
directory, then copy the new driver to your Windows system directory.
You should now be able to play NFL Math.  There are also known conflicts
with older versions of the Dell video drivers. If your system uses Dell
video drivers, you can get the latest versions from the Dell BBS.  You
should have the latest version of your video card's Windows driver.
Contact your video card manufacturer or computer vendor for more
information.

Diamond Multimedia Video Card problem:
If your computer's video card is a Diamond Multimedia Video Card, there is 
a known incompatibility that scrambles the video on your screen. You can fix 
it by exiting NFL Math (if it's running) and doing the following:
1. Select "Run" from the Program Manager File Menu.
2. Enter 'sysedit' and press OK. This will bring up your System 
Configuration Editor.
3. Click on the window that says "...WINDOWS\WIN.INI" and find the following text:

[SWKKEG]
Compat=0

4. change Compat=0 to Compat=1
5. Under the System Configuration Editor File menu, select 'Save", and close 
the System Configuration Editor.
6. Restart Nfl Math and the problem should be fixed. If you still have trouble,
 call our Technical Support Department.
