It also provides important information regarding Nikolai's
Pharaohs for Windows that has become available after the jewel
case insert was printed. Please take the time to read this if

(A) Setup of Nikolai's Pharaohs for the first time
======================================
Before using Nikolai's Pharaohs for the first time,
you need to run the appropriate setup program.
1. WINDOWS 3.1X SETUP
====================
To set up Nikolai's Pharaohs on Windows 3.1x:
1) Insert the compact disk into your CD-ROM drive.
2) Choose the Run command from the File menu in the Program Manager.
3) In the Run dialog box, type "D:\SETUP.EXE", where "D" is the letter
name of your CD-ROM drive. Then, click the OK button.
If you are not sure which drive letter your CD-ROM drive uses,
open the File Manager and look for the CD-ROM drive icon.
The name of the drive will appear with the CD-ROM drive icon.
4) Follow the on-screen instructions. At your option, the Nikolai's Pharaohs
Installer will update QuickTime on your computer to version 2.1.2 for Windows.
A message will be displayed when the setup is complete.
2. WINDOWS 95 SETUP
===================
To set up Nikolai's Pharaohs on Windows 95:
1) Insert the compact disk into your CD-ROM drive.
2) If the Windows 95 auto-run feature is enabled, click the Install
button below the Nikolai's Pharaohs auto-run graphic.
or
If the Windows 95 auto-run feature is disabled, choose the Run
command from the Start menu on your desktop.
3) In the Run dialog box, type "D:\SETUP32.EXE", where
"D" is the letter name of your CD-ROM drive.
Then click the OK button.
If you are not sure which drive letter your CD-ROM drive uses,
open the Explorer and look for the CD-ROM drive icon.
The name of the drive will appear with the CD-ROM drive icon.
4) Follow the on-screen instructions. At your option, the Nikolai's Pharaohs
Installer will update QuickTime on your computer to version 2.1.2 for Windows.
A message will be displayed when the setup is complete.
(B) Running Nikolai's Pharaohs
=========================
Nikolai's Pharaohs is designed to run with the CD-ROM disk in the
CD-ROM drive during play.
1. Running on WINDOWS 3.1X
===========================
Double-click on the Nikolai's Pharaohs icon in the ABCDs Program
Group of the Program Manager.
2. Running on WINDOWS 95
=========================
1) Insert the compact disk into your CD-ROM drive.
2) If the Windows 95 auto-run feature is enabled, click the Play
button below the Nikolai's Pharaohs auto-run graphic.

If the Windows 95 auto-run feature is disabled, choose
the Programs option from the Start menu on your desktop.
From the ABCDs Program Group, click on the Nikolai's
Pharaohs icon.
(C) Passwords
===========
New and Past Adventures:
=====================
The maximum length available for any name entered in the
"NEW ADVENTURE" window is 14 characters.
The maximum number of names that can be saved in the
"PAST ADVENTURE" window is 50.
If the maximum limit is reached and a new user logs in, the new name will
then replace the oldest name.
Parent/Teacher Password:
=======================
A password function has been made available for Parents
or Teachers to use. This function allows easy access to all
pages of the Nikolai's Pharaohs CD-ROM.
The Parent/Teacher password is Shift-6, Shift-P, /, Shift-T
(D) Improving the Performance on Microsoft Windows 95
=============================================
The performance of any CD-ROM application is greatly affected by the
speed of your computer, the speed of your CD-ROM drive and the amount
of RAM your system has available. To enjoy Nikolai's Pharaohs at its very
best, ABCD's recommends running it on a Pentium machine.
1. Video Performance
=================
If Nikolai's Pharaohs seems to be running slowly, performance may be
improved by setting your video driver to 256 color (8-bit) mode.
For more information about setting color mode, see the documentation
provided by your video card manufacturer.
In Windows 95, check the settings in the QuickTime Control Panel.
Select the Help feature in the QuickTime Control Panel for further
information. If you are having problems with QuickTime under
Windows 95, you might have to install a 16-bit version of QuickTime
on some computers. The 16-bit QuickTime Installer can be found on
the Nikolai's Pharaohs CD-ROM in the QTINSTAL directory;
it is called QT16.exe.
In Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups, read the Quicktime Read Me
found in the QuickTime for Windows Program Group.
2. Defragmentation
===============
A drive that has had a lot of file activity will run slowly.
If your Hard Disk is fragmented, please run the Disk Defragmentation
program found under Start Menu --> Programs --> Accessories -->
System Tools --> Disk Defragmenter.
(E) Improving the Performance on Microsoft Windows 3.1x
==============================================
The performance of any CD-ROM application is greatly affected by the
speed of your computer, the speed of your CD-ROM drive and the amount
of RAM your system has available. To enjoy Nikolai's Pharaohs at its very
best, ABCD's recommends running it on a Pentium machine.
1. CD-ROM Caching
===============
To improve the performance of Nikolai's Pharaohs, you can use SMARTDRV.EXE's
CD-ROM caching. This is available to users of DOS 6.2.
To enable CD-ROM caching:
In your "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file, ensure that a CD-ROM extensions program,
such as MSCDEX, is loaded before SMARTDRV. An example:
C:\BIN\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:10
C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X 2048
Consult your DOS 6.2 documentation for additional details.
Note: After changing the "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file, reboot the computer by
pressing the Reset button or CRTL-ALT-DEL keys.
2. Video Performance
=================
If Nikolai's Pharaohs is running slowly, performance may be
improved by setting your video driver to 256 color (8-bit) mode. For more
information about setting color mode, see the documentation provided
by your video card manufacturer.
3. Changing Swap-File Settings
=========================
Swap-file settings affect the performance of Nikolai's Pharaohs.
You can change the the swap file's type, drive location and size.
These settings control how your system uses virtual memory.
To change swap-file settings:
1. From Control Panel, choose the 386 Enhanced icon.
2. Click on the Virtual Memory button.
3. Click on the Change button.
4. Change the swap-file type to Permanent and set the file size to at
least 10240KB.
5. Click on the OK button.
6. In the 386 Enhanced dialog box, click on the OK button.
Note: On a drive with a lot of previous file activity, run DOS's DEFRAG or another disk defragmentation program before creating a large permanent swap-file.
(F) Troubleshooting
===============
1. Dialog Boxes:
===============
Please run "SETUP.EXE" again if the following dialog boxes
are displayed:
Where is "FILEIO.DLL"
Where is "DATA.DXR"
Where is "EJECTMOV.DXR"
Where is "PHARAOHS.DLL"
Script Error: XLib not found.
The "DATA.DXR" file is involved in the process of saving games.
Please make sure the attribute (property) for "DATA.DXR" is not READ ONLY,
once it has been installed onto the hard drive.
2. Sound
=======
If you're experiencing any sound problems with Nikolai's Pharaohs,
contact the manufacturer of your sound card to make sure you have
the latest drivers for your sound card. If you still have difficulties
after installing the latest drivers, and your sound card is working
with other Windows applications, contact ABCDs Multimedia Technical Support.
3. Video
=======
If you're experiencing any problems with graphics or animations,
in Nikolai's Pharaohs, contact the manufacturer of your video card to
make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card. If you
still have difficulties after installing the latest drivers,
contact ABCD's Multimedia Technical Support.
4. Inserting Other Nikolai's CD-ROMs
=============================
When you are asked to insert either Nikolai's Trains, Nikolai's Knights
and Nikolai'sToys CD-ROMs, please ensure that you are inserting a
Version 2.0 of each disk.
The Version number 2.0 identification can be found at the beginning of
the
Read ME file of these CD-ROMs.
The Nikolai's Trains, Nikolai's Knights and Nikolai's Toys CD-ROMs
distributed
by Corel or Apple will not work with the insert feature of this
version (2.0) of
Nikolai's Pharaohs.

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE USING THIS PRODUCT. BY YOUR USAGE OF THIS PRODUCT YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS LICENSE. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS LICENSE, YOU SHOULD RETURN THE PRODUCT AND ALL ACCOMPANYING ITEMS (INCLUDING ALL WRITTEN MATERIALS) TO THE PLACE YOU OBTAINED THEM WITHIN 10 DAYS OF PURCHASE FOR A FULL REFUND.
1. GRANT OF LICENSE: I. HOFFMANN + ASSOCIATES INC. ("H+A") provides you with
the non-exclusive right to use the enclosed copy of the software program
(the "Software"), user manual and accompanying printed materials (the
"Documents") (together called the "Product") pursuant to the terms of this
Agreement. H+A reserves all rights not expressly granted under this
Agreement.
2. COPY AND USE RESTRICTIONS:
You may:
a) use the Software for your own personal use and you may use one copy of
the Product on a single terminal connected to a single computer;
b) make one copy of the Software for backup or archival purposes only;
c) transfer the Software from one computer to another provided that the
Software is used on only one at a time. You may transfer the Product
provided that you assign the Software (including upgrades and prior
versions), all Documents and all your rights under this Agreement on a
permanent basis, you cease all use of the Software and delete the set up
file from your computer and the recipient agrees to the terms of this
Agreement. d) If the Product is an upgrade from a previous version, you
may use or transfer the product only in conjunction with the upgraded
product, unless it is destroyed. If the product is an upgrade from a H+A
product, you may only use the upgraded product in accordance with this
Agreement.
You may not:
a) use or copy the Product except as permitted in this Agreement;
b) network the Product or otherwise use it on more than one computer or
computer terminal at the same time; c) distribute copies of the Product
to others; d) rent or lease the Product; e) sell, assign or transfer
the Product except as set out above; f) reverse engineer, disassemble,
decompile, modify, adapt, translate or create derivative works based on
the Product; g) remove or obscure any copyright or trademark notices.
3. COPYRIGHT: The Software, including any images, photographs, animation,
video, audio, music and text incorporated in the Software, and the
Documents are protected by copyright and international treaty provisions.
You may be held legally responsible for any copying or copyright
infringement which is caused or encouraged by your failure to abide by
the terms of these restrictions.
4. TERMINATION: This license is effective until terminated. This license
will terminate automatically without notice from H+A if you fail to comply
with any provision of this agreement. Upon termination you shall destroy
all copies of the Software and all Documents. All provisions of the
Agreement as to warranties, limitation of liability, remedies or damages,
and our ownership rights shall survive termination.
5. 90 DAY WARRANTY: H+A warrants that the storage media on which
the software is delivered will be free of substantial errors or defects in
materials and workmanship under normal use and service for a period
of 90 days from original retail purchase.
This policy applies to the initial purchaser only. No other advertising,
description or representation, whether made by a H+A dealer, distributor,
agent or employee, shall be binding upon H+A or shall change the terms of
this warranty. H+A's entire liability and your exclusive remedy will be,
at H+A's option, either (a) return of the price paid or (b) repair or
replacement of the storage media that does not meet the Limited
Warranty and that is returned with a copy of your receipt. This Limited
Warranty is void if failure of the storage media has resulted from
accident, abuse, or misapplication. This limited warranty gives you
specific legal rights and you may have other legislated rights which vary
from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
6. LIMITATION OF WARRANTIES AND LIABILITY:
EXCEPT FOR THE EXPRESS WARRANTY ABOVE, THE PRODUCT IS
PROVIDED AS IS AND WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND EITHER
EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMISSIBLE
PURSUANT TO APPLICABLE LAW, H+A DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES,
EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, IMPLIED
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A
PARTICULAR PURPOSE. You assume the entire risk as to the
results and performance of the Product. Subject to applicable law, under
no circumstances will H+A (or its suppliers, dealers, agents, directors,
officers, employees or contractors) be liable for any indirect, incidental,
special or consequential damages whatsoever that result from the use of,
or the inability to use, the Product (including lost profits or revenues,
lost or damaged data or other economic loss) even if H+A has been advised
or is aware of the possibility of such damages or for claims by a third
party. In no event shall H+A's (or its suppliers' or dealers') total
liability to you for all damages, losses, and causes of action exceed
the amount paid by you for this Product. The limitations in this section
shall apply whether or not the alleged breach or default is a breach of
a fundamental condition or term or a fundamental breach. Because some
jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or
consequential damages, so the above limitations may not apply to you.
7. EXPORT LAW ASSURANCES: You may not use or otherwise export or reexport
the Software except as authorized by the United States and the laws of
the jurisdiction in which the software was obtained. In particular, but
without limitation, none of the Software may be used or otherwise exported
or reexported (i) into (or to a national or resident of) a United States
embargoed country or (ii) to anyone on the U.S. Treasury Department's
list of Specially Designed Nationals or the U.S. Department of Commerce's
Table of Denial Orders. By using the Software, you represent and warrant
that you are not located in, under control of, or a national or resident
of any such country or on any such list.
8. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS: This Product is provided with
restricted rights. Use, duplication, or disclosure by the U.S. Government
is subject to restrictions as set forth in subparagraph (c)(1)(ii) of
the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at DFARS
252.227-7013 or subparagraphs (c)(1) and (2) of the Commercial Computer
Software Restricted Rights at 48 CFR 52.227-19 or clause 18 52.227-86
(d) of the NASA Supplement to the FAR, as applicable. Contractor/

9. OTHER: This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance
with the laws of the Province of Ontario and of the laws of Canada
applicable therein. If any provision of this Agreement shall be unlawful,
void, or unenforceable, then that provision will be deemed severable
from this agreement and will not affect the validity and enforceability
of any remaining provisions. This is the entire agreement between the
parties relating to the subject matter herein and may not be modified
except in writing, signed by both parties. The parties have requested
that this agreement and all documents contemplated hereby be drawn up
