The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth is a real-time strategy video game developed by EA Los Angeles for Microsoft Windows. It was released in December 6, 2004 and is based on Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, in turn based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s original novel.

How to play on Windows

  1. Click on the download button. It should redirect you to your download. Make sure you download the file properly and that your internet does not disconnect while downloading.
  2. Extract the “The Battle for Middle-earth” folder to your desktop.
  3. Open the “The Battle for Middle-earth” folder and then open the “Game Files” folder.
  4. Run the “Setup.exe” file and the game setup should launch. On higher resolution screens, you might not be able to see the full setup. In this case you can just press “Enter” on your keyboard to complete the setup. BFME 1 should begin installing on your computer.
  5. Once the game is installed, you can run the game from the desktop shortcut.
  6. Enjoy the game!

  1. So I have the original disc for this game (Disc 2) and it doesn’t work so here I am, looking for this game online.

  2. Hello, I just downloaded the game, installed it and could play the first couple of missions of the good campaing. Then starting die Amun Hen mission, the game crashed and now I cant start it anymore. It says in the Launcher: “You must run the game from its install directory”. I tried with all files I could find in the intall folder but nothing worked. Thanks in advance

  3. I cant seem to have the mouse free move can only use the keys the commands in the game are all messed up anyone else have this problem?

    • Hey there! What kind of minifreezes do you have? and could you tell your PC specs and what system are you using? It might be that you have to update your graphics card drivers or install older versions of DirectX such as 8.0, 9.0, 10.
      Also Update Visual C++ Libraries and NET Framework, these are like graphical system improvements to have games working correctly.

  5. Having trouble opening the game again. when I try to launch it says, you must run the game in the install directory.

    • Remember to apply the crack that comes in the game files you have downloaded, just copy the game.dat file to your game installation directory.

  6. I’m getting an error at the end of installation, and it says:

    …..
    Unable to execute file:
    C:Program Files (x86)EA GAMESThe Battle for Middle-earth
    (tm)AddReg.exe

    ShellExecuteEx failed; code 2.
    The system cannot find the file specified
    …..

    It allows me to press finish and it allows me to open the “T3A:ONLINE” Menu, but when I press “Launch BFME” nothing happens, and I’m guessing it’s due to the installation error.
