SPECIAL FEATURE:
The BARBIE(TM) OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM) CD-ROM also includes RED-BOOK AUDIO CD tracks that can be played on any CD audio player. To play these tracks, place the CD-ROM in the player and advance to track 2 and press play.

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Section 1 : BEFORE YOU RUN THE BARBIE(TM) OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM) ON MS-DOS ONLY!!!!!

A.) You must disable SMARTDRV. To do this follow the instructions below:
-------------
a.) Exit Windows(R) and type CD \ press <enter> from the next prompt type EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT press <enter>.
b.) Look for a line similar to: C:\DOS\ smartdrv.exe 1024 1024 /q
c.) Move your cursor to the beginning of the line and type REM and press the SPACEBAR (DO NOT PRESS ENTER!!!!!!!)
d.) Now choose the File menu and choose Exit, OR press the ALT key once, then the letter F [for file], then the letter X [for exit].
e.) This will display a dialog box that asks if you would like to save your changes. Choose YES or just press enter.
f.) If you would like to re-enable SMARTDRV after playing the program, just follow the steps above, remove the letters "REM" and save as described above.
B. Mouse Setup
------------
You will need to insure that you have a mouse driver specified either in your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT. To see if you have a mouse driver available, from the C:\ > type DIR /S *mouse.* /P This will return the directory name and file names found that contain the "mouse". Look for a .COM or .EXE change to that directory and type the name of the file that was found.
C.) Audio Setup
------------
When using a Sound Card with Barbie(TM) Ocean Discovery(TM) through MS-DOS, there are a few setup steps which must be taken. First, the "BLASTER" environment variable setting must be in your autoexec.bat (or you can type it in manually from the MS-DOS command prompt).
Running the Sound Blaster utility diagnose.exe will automatically configure your sound card and will place this statement in your autoexec.bat file for you.
A typical blaster setting looks like this (although yours may vary):
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
If you don't get sound while trying to play the audio track, check to see if a small cable goes from the back of your CD-ROM player directly to your sound card. If the CD-ROM audio cable is connected to your sound board (or the motherboard in some cases) and you STILL don't hear CD Audio coming from
your speakers, make sure the MIXER program has the CD volume turned up.
You will also need to run the CD-ROM driver MSCDEX.EXE.
Here is an example of the files you should see (yours probably will vary) listed in your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT (explanation is in parentheses):
CONFIG.SYS:
DEVICE=C:\PROSCSI\CDROM.SYS /D:PROCD01 (CD-ROM driver)
AUTOEXEC.BAT:
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6 (sound environment variable setting)
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:PROCD01 /L:D (CD-ROM driver)
D.) Booting Clean
-------------
If you are going to be running with only 8 megabytes of RAM, it is best to boot as clean as possible. You can eliminate unwanted utilities or applications from taking up valuable memory without having to alter your regular AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS. Booting clean can be done in one of two ways: If you have MS-DOS version 6.xx, booting clean is as simple a pressing the shift key when you see the words "Starting MS-DOS". If you have MS-DOS version 5.xx you will need to make a system disk.
To make a boot disk, type the following from the MS-DOS command prompt:
FORMAT A: /S
1. Make sure that this is a disk you wish to erase.
2. This disk absolutely HAS to be formatted in the A: drive.
To use the system disk, place the disk in the A: drive and reset the computer.
NOTE: If your sound card requires a driver to be loaded, or you will be using a mouse, the system disk will need to have a CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
that load the appropriate drivers in order for them to run.
Once all steps are complete, use this disk to boot each time you run BARBIE(TM) OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM).
E.) Running from DOS
------------
If you should have problems running from Windows(R) 3.1, we recommend running BARBIE(TM) OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM) from DOS.
a.) To do this, Quit Windows.
b.) From the prompt type cd \OCEAN and press <enter>.
c.) From the OCEAN directory, type DISCOVR and press <enter>.
Section 2: PRINTING IN WINDOWS(TM) 95
--------------
Some printer drivers will cause Ocean Discovery(TM) to minimize to the task bar during the printing process. After your print job completes, click on the Barbie icon on the Taskbar to restore the program.
If you should experience a palette shift (i.e.-incorrect color on screen), after printing and resuming gameplay, change your Taskbar options to "Auto hide".
To do this:
a.) Click on START, SETTINGS, TASKBAR
b.) On the Taskbar Options tab, check the box next to "Auto hide" and click APPLY.
Section 3: INSTALL/UNINSTALL TIPS
-------------------------
1. DOS/WINDOWS(R)3.1x - INSTALLATION
-Place the CD-ROM in the tray and close the tray
-Choose "Run" from the "File" menu.
-In the "Run" dialog box, type D:\Setup.exe (where "D:" is the letter that relates to the CD-ROM drive on your system).
-Follow the on screen prompts to complete the installation.
-Once the installation completes, you will be prompted to restart Windows(R).
-You will then be able to launch the BARBIE(TM) OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM) application from the BARBIE(TM) OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM) program group.
2. DOS/WINDOWS(R) 3.1x - UNINSTALLING
-From the BARBIE(TM) OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM) program group, double click on the Uninstall icon and follow the on-screen instructions.
3. WINDOWS(R) 95 - INSTALLATION
-Place the BARBIE(TM) OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM) CD in your CD-ROM Drive. If you have the Auto Insert notification feature enables for your CD-ROM drive, the installation will start automatically. If not, please follow the steps below.
-From the START Menu, select RUN, BROWSE and click on the Setup.exe icon. Or from BROWSE, type d:\setup (d: refers to your CD-ROM drive letter).
-Follow the on screen prompts to complete the installation.
-When prompted to restart Windows(R), click YES.
-After Windows(R) restarts, you will have the choice of running the BARBIE(TM) OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM) application from the Desktop icon that is created automatically, or from the START menu, PROGRAMS, OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM) folder.
4. WINDOWS(R) 95 - UNINSTALLING
-From the BARBIE(TM) OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM) program folder on the START menu, PROGRAMS, Ocean Discovery (TM), double click on the Uninstall icon and follow the on-screen instructions.
-Additionally, you can also remove the program by going to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL and then double click on the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon. From the Install/Uninstall tab, scroll down until you find the OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM) directory. Highlight the directory and click ADD/REMOVE.
-Please note that if you uninstall the program you will lose any games that you have saved.
Section 4: RUNNING THE PROGRAM

DOS/Windows 3.1 - Double-click on the Ocean Discovery icon in the Ocean Discovery(TM) program group.
Windows 95 - Double-click on the Ocean Discovery icon on the desktop OR, choose START, PROGRAMS, OCEAN DISCOVERY and choose the Ocean Discovery icon.
Section 5: SYSTEM PERFORMANCE TIPS

These tips are designed to improve your overall system performance.
A.) IMPROVE DISK ACCESS PERFORMANCE
With MS-DOS 5.0 or older, you'll need to use a separate utility for disk optimization. If you're using MS-DOS 6.0 or newer, use the
following steps to defragment and optimize your disk:
1. Exit Windows. At the C:\> prompt, type "defrag C: /f" and press ENTER.
This process will take a few minutes.
2. Restart Windows and run the program.
Section 6: GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
---------
A.) IF THE PROGRAM RUNS SLOWLY:
1. Close any unnecessary applications that may be running.
B.) IF DISPLAY OR GRAPHICS PROBLEMS OCCUR:
If you experience display or graphics problems while running Ocean Discovery:
1. Make sure that your display setting is at 640x480 resolution and 256 colors. Refer to your system or Windows (R) documentation.
2. Contact your video card or systems vendor to obtain the latest version of their video driver.
3. Make sure other applications are not running while Barbie(TM) Ocean Discovery (TM) is running.
C.) IF DIFFICULTIES ARE ENCOUNTERED WHILE PRINTING:
1. Make sure your computer is not connected to a Network printer. This program will not print on a Network system.
2. Printing is not available from the DOS program.
3. Contact your printer manufacturer for the latest version of print drivers for your printer.
Section 7: COMPATIBILITY ISSUES
---------
A.) THIRD-PARTY SHELLS
If you are using a program shell other than the Windows(R) Program Manager (e.g., Norton Desktop) and are experiencing trouble installing or playing BARBIE(TM) OCEAN DISCOVERY(TM), try changing the shell back to the standard Windows(R) Program Manager.
Refer to your shell documentation or call your shell vendor if you need assistance.
B.) SCREEN SAVERS
If you are running a screen saver in the background and experience video and sound problems during the program, disable the screen saver
and the problem should be solved. Refer to your user documentation on how to disable the screen saver.
