Jeff Gordon XS Racing is an arcade-type game that features "next generation" stock cars and racetracks. The game has six different car designs, each with varying performance ability. Utilizing any or all of these race cars, the player can reach speeds up to 300 miles per hour while he or she competes with up to 40 other cars.
The game ships with ten multi-path tracks (Super Speedways) that combine jumps, loops and canted turns. Racing strengths of opponents are customizable with three optional aggressiveness settings. Jeff Gordon XS Racing supports but does not require 3Dfx acceleration. Force feedback steering wheels and joysticks are accommodated as well.
Gameplay can be accomplished via keyboard, steering wheel or joystick. Retractable wings, air-braking and seasonal play are a few of the options available in the game. XS Racing features three modes of competition. In Season 1, you compete in a ten race season with pre-set opponents and laps for each race. Completing Season 1 earns you a new car but only if the medium or hard difficulty setting is used.
Season 2 puts you on the track with Jeff Gordon. In order to move beyond this mode, you'll have to beat Gordon in the overall standings. If successful at this level, you'll advance to the Ultimate Challenge mode, where you'll need to use all of the skills learned in seasons one and two. The "bonus" for achieving the final challenge is the right to face Gordon one-on-one, on a track that has been off limits up to this point.
The game also contains a wide variety of adjustable options that affect how smoothly the game runs, such as smoke, skids, shadows, sparks, reflection, light flares, head-up displays (HUD), lighting and video controls. The sound can also be customized to fit your particular PC by toggling items like music, environmental sounds, tires, engine noise, speech and collision effects.
