Political Tycoon (released as Economic War in Europe) puts you in the role of a world leader out to overpower rival countries through subversion, including spying and blackmail, as well as normal means, such as trade negotiations and military might. Natural resource management, diplomatic and military considerations, factory building, corruption, foreign policy, and the threat of nuclear war are some of the situations you must manage to successfully bully your way to world domination.

There are eight scenarios, ranging from the 1950s arms race to an uncertain future in 2050. Five single-player scenarios (against seven computer-controlled countries) deal with diverse topics including food, oil, arms, telecommunications, and organ donors, while three futuristic scenarios (all set in 2050) involve post-plague, café culture, and shellshock issues. The multiplayer games can also be played single-player, with the computer controlling the opponents. A total of 20 countries are represented in the game.

Issues are raised and decisions made through an interface of summary screens covering finance, production, diplomacy, research, and rankings. You'll manage a staff that includes a Head of State, ministers, diplomats, spies and counterspies, as well as buildings including prisons, media outlets, embassies, and science centers. The world situation is monitored through world and country maps.

Political Tycoon uses a point-and-click interface supported by numerous hotkeys. The French computer game company, Monte Cristo Multimedia, is known for a series of "tycoon" titles, including Airline Tycoon, Gadget Tycoon, and Casino Tycoon, as well as another economic simulation, Wall Street Trader.
