  1. If you encounter the error message “Unknown error encountered – aborting setup,” follow these steps to resolve the problem:

    1. On your desktop, search for “Regedit” and open it. Navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” > “SOFTWARE” and search for any Sims-related folders, including any from EA (Maxis, EA Games, Sims). Delete any Sims 1 related folders you find.

    2. Go to your “Local Disk” > “Program Files (x86).” While inside, click on “View” in the upper tab, then select “Show” > “Hidden Elements.” Enter the “InstallShield Installation Information” folder and search for any Sims 1 related folders For me it was {F2527115-B8BF….} Delete it. (The correct folder contains files like “data1.cab” and “setup.exe,” similar to those found inside “The Sims 1 Complete Collection” setup folder.)

    3. Navigate to “The Sims 1 Complete Collection” folder and find the “Eraser” application. Launch it.

Following these steps should allow you to install the game without encountering any errors.

  5. It does not work anymore. You cannot save any progress.
It does download and install. the Sim.exe works when copied and pasted in the proper folder. The game runs nicely until you go to save.

    • Just to be certain, the folder’s name is Maxis and not Matrix.
If that still doesn’t work, then you might have changed the folder where Sims were installed originally. Try re-installing the game and watching the installation path (i.e., folder), where it’s installed.
